Advent Activities for Kids and Catholic Women & Moms (2015)

Happy First Sunday of Advent!! We just got back into town after a week away spending time at Disneyland and with my extended family over Thanksgiving weekend. It was such a wonderful trip with so many happy moments! However, now it is back to reality with unpacking and washing laundry so we can start our Advent celebration.

Today I happened to write the daily devotion for Blessed Is She and it is the perfect time to practice what I preach! Here is a snippet:

I just love the holiday season, especially Christmas! About mid-September I begin to look forward to all the delights of the season, such as the smell of Christmas trees and the sight of twinkling lights. I love the sound of Christmas carols, the taste of hot cocoa on a cold evening and the feeling that people, in general, are a little kinder, more generous, and filled with Christmas cheer.

However, before I get too sentimental, today’s reading is a sober reminder that while the joys of the season are good, there is a deeper meaning to it. It is especially fitting that we reflect on this as we begin this Advent season.

I don’t know about you, but there have been far too many Advents where I start out of the gate strong with a long list of things that will make this the best Advent ever. I make promises not to get caught up in the commercialism and busyness of the season and instead prepare my heart for the coming of the Christ Child. But somehow, as the weeks pass by the “anxieties of daily life” take over and I’m stressing like a mad woman as it gets closer to December 25th. Can you relate?

We have a number of family activities that we have done in the past – Advent wreath, letter to Baby Jesus, acts of charity calendar, filling Jesus’ crib with straw, etc. You can find a recap of our favorite Advent activities here. My advice? Don’t over do it! Pick one thing. It’s not about doing all the cutesy crafts or every Advent project you come across. It is about preparing your heart for the Christ Child and simple is usually best. 🙂

This year I am trying something new. I have never done a Jesse Tree before but I purchased this one from Blessed Is She and will give it a try! I will write more about it next week! (Also, check out the BIS Advent Gatherings that will take place at various locations world wide!)
