Pete the Cat Paper Plate Halloween Treat Holder

This year, along with being a room mom, I volunteer as a library parent. Once or twice a month I lead a library class for a younger grade. Usually, I read two books, do an art activity and then the kids choose a book to read.

This month I did a Halloween theme with Pete the Cat. We read the following:

Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins

This book is a short and simple read but it is one of the kids’ favorites and the class read along with me since they had it practically memorized!

Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete

The second read was the new Pete the Cat book – Trick or Pete, which is a fun lift-the-flaps book.

For our art activity, we made Pete the Cat Halloween Treat Holders with paper plates. I searched Pinterest for ideas and there was a regular cat version that required you to paint the plates with black paint. Since we had limited time and I didn’t want a huge mess, I decided to make a construction paper version instead.

First, I got two white paper plates and cut out pieces the same size/shape as Pete’s face. I stapled the two paper plates, leaving an opening for the treats.

Next I put together Pete’s face. I made a simple pattern for the face, eyes, nose and traced them onto construction paper. (You can download the pattern from Google Drive here.)

I used black construction paper for the head, and eye part #2. I used yellow for eye part #1 and cut six thin 3 inch strips for the whiskers. I used white for the nose and eye part #3. Then I glued the pieces together angling the eyes to give it the droopy-eyed Pete look. For the whiskers, I glued 3 on each side of the face first then glued the nose on top. I curled the ends of the whiskers up a bit.

To make things easier at school, I pre-cut all the piece and placed them in a snack-sized bag. Each child got a bag and their already cut and stapled plates. (Granted, this prep work took me awhile to finish but by adding a favorite drink and movie to watch and it wasn’t so bad.) πŸ˜‰

The students had a lot of fun putting them together and everyone’s cat looked a little different but so cute! When they finished and were picking a book to check out, I placed in their treat holder a bag of Halloween shaped pretzels and a lollipop.

It was a fun activity that I hope to do again next year! πŸ™‚

Saturday Spotlight: Jenna at Call Her Happy

Revolution of Love - Saturday Spotlight (logo_saturday_spotlight_3)I’m excited to start a new series on the blog called Saturday Spotlight. Every month or so I will feature someone and their creativity – whether it is a crafty mama selling her creations on etsy, or a Catholic artist bringing beauty into the world or a blogger spreading the light of Christ through her (or his) words. I think it will be a great way to support the people who are making the word a little brighter with their God given talents.

Today our feature spotlight is for Jenna at Call Her Happy.

I have been a fan of Jenna’s blog for some time and marveled at her ability to cross stitch, especially since I have zero sewing ability.

Then Jenna came out with these cute mini-hoop necklaces and I loved them! I ordered one with my initial.

revolution of love - ba_4_15bI wore it to the CWBNCA conference a couple weeks ago and I lost count of how many people came up to me and asked, “Is that one of Jenna’s necklaces?” πŸ™‚

I’ll tell you how you can win a necklace of your own but first a little Q&A with Jenna.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Well, I am a stay-at-home-mom from Michigan who got into the blogging game late 2010. I also run the Etsy shop Call Her Happy where I sell tiny little wearable hoop art. My teeny army of children, Ellen, Samuel and Theodore, and bearded husband Mike fill me to the brim. I am happiest when it is sunny outside and I have an embroidery needle in my hand. A good book does the trick too. My current favorite things are acid wash jeans, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

2. How did you get into making these mini necklaces?

I’ve always been a creative, but when I had kids, I had considerably less time to make. I needed to find something that I could pick up and put back down easily without a huge clean up. Embroidery fit the bill, so I gave it a try. After falling in love with the art, I wanted a way I could fund my habit, and when I found the mini hoops, it seemed like a perfect fit for this mama. And, thanks to everyone on the Internet, they were very well received!

3. What are other favorite ways you express your creativity?

I also like to color…in coloring books…with crayons. Does that count?? Oh. And I love to wear colorful lipstick. Very creative, I am.

4. As a busy mom how do you find time for these projects?

Well, the thing about embroidery is that you can do a few stitches and then put down your hoop to change a diaper. It’s a handheld, portable craft making it super easy to pick at when you’ve got little ones literally underfoot.

5. Any last comments?

Thank you for thinking of me for such a fun feature! If you’d like to try one of my necklaces, use code REVOLUTIONLOVE for 10% off through June 1, 2015. xo

ss_jenna_necklaceWould you like to win a hoop necklace of your own? Perhaps your initial or a pretty flower or the Sacred Heart. Check out Jenna’s shop and pick your favorite. Then come back here and enter the contest to win your fave hoop necklace. Good luck!

And a big thanks to Jenna for making our lives a little prettier with her beautiful creations. πŸ™‚

Pinterest Party & Link-Up (vol 32): The Gratitude Tree

Welcome to the RoL Pinterest Party. Join me as we link up and share how we made, cooked, baked, crafted, planned, organized, followed or created one of the pins on our Pinterest boards OR share something original that others can pin onto their boards.

Not on Pinterest? No problem. Link-up your own creation to inspire us so we can pin in to our own boards. It can be a recipe, sewing project, Catholic craft, homeschool project, organizing/ homemaking tip, themed birthday party, whatever you’d like.

Don’t have a post ready? The link-up will be open for 10 days so there’s still time. Plus, feel free to link up a new post or an older post that hasn’t had much traffic lately. πŸ™‚

PLEASE NOTE: Because we are entering the busy season of the holidays, I will be doing the Pinterest Party only once a month. It will be every first Tuesday of the month and the link up will be open for 30 days, so there is plenty of time to join the fun! πŸ™‚

I’ve been cleaning up some older posts and I found this one from a couple years back. I thought it would be perfect to re-post since I just finished my 31 Days of Gratitude and Thanksgiving is this month. This is a great gratitude project that you can do with your own family.

It is our family tradition that the week of Thanksgiving we visit our family (and Disneyland) in So Cal. Eight out of our nine siblings still live in California, except for Elena who lives in Virginia. A couple years back Elena posted about The Thankful Tree project she made. When I read her post, I thought it would be a perfect Thanksgiving project for all the siblings/relatives meeting at my mom and dads for the holiday. .

It would be a way to share our gratitude with each other and since Elena inspired the idea, it kept her close despite the distance.

First we took a large piece of a paper roll, sketched out a tree and colored it.

We cut leaves out of construction paper and placed them in a basket with pens. We had each of the family members and guests write down what they were especially thankful for this year.

We had various answers – faith, family, and loved ones, our country, our servicemen and women, the ability reason and forgive, running buddies, as well as dirt and rocks to play with. (Pictured is my leaf along with Andrew’s and John-Paul’s.)

Lastly, we had everyone add their leaves to the tree. All in all, it was a fun and meaningful project! (Thanks, EL. ;-))

What Thanksgiving traditions does you family have?

For the last few days I’ve been looking at Pinterest for Valentine’s Day ideas. Some of the local Catholic moms are getting their kids together for a St. Valentine’s Day party so I was looking for some Catholic valentine inspiration. Also, since Valentine’s Day is during Lent we didn’t want to give the usual candy with our cards so instead we bought bubbles, Play-Doh and fishy cracker packets. Here are the results.

John-Paul is giving small containers of Play-Doh to his friends so I paired it with Jennifer’s adorable St. Valentine download from CatholicInspired.com.

Instead of gluing St. Valentine to the heart, I taped him to the container of Play Dough. I can either use the blank part of the heart to write each child’s name or just shrink down the heart. (It could also be used as a name tag/table setting for each child.)

Matthew is giving small bottles of bubbles so I went online and found a photo of Snoopy (a favorite of the kids) and added the words “God’s love blows me away. Happy St. Valentine’s Day!”

Lastly, Andrew is giving small packs of fishy crackers so I downloaded an image of a little boy fishing and made this valentine. (Note: I purchased the image for $1.25.)

We were pleased with the way they came out and hope the kids enjoy them on Thursday. πŸ™‚

Making It Count Tuesday (Vol 9): Creating A Shutterfly Photo Book

Welcome to Making It Count Tuesday, which is every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Originally hosted by Sarah and Pam, it’s new home in now here at RoL.

If you are new to Making it Count, you simply start with any one of those fabulous ideas you’ve found online. Then, do it. Make it. Cook it. Create it. Take it from the screen, give it life and let it bless your world. When you’re done, snap a photo, write about it and share it with us.

2012 was the year I discovered Instagram and since then my iPhone has been snapping photos like crazy! I usually print out my photos and stick them in a photo album but I hardly touched them this year and instead I have a big pile of photos accumulating. I was thinking about putting together a 2012 family year book and looked into Shutterfly Photo Books since I happened to have a coupon.

They offer soft covers, hard covers and premiums books. I loved the various customizable designs and themes they available and was pleased that I could easily use the 4×4 photos of Istagram as well as my standard 4×6. (In fact, the “Pictogram” themed book is made specifically for square photos.) Since I have never seen one of the finished projects before I decided to experiment first with a 8×11 soft cover since it was less than $20. I looked through all the themes and finally picked “Through the Seasons.”

For the cover and some of the pages, I simply used their template and added the photos. For others I chose different formats, backgrounds and stickers to make my own designs. Here are some of the pages from our book.

The cover.

(The back cover)

I was pleased with the way the book turned out and ordered more books as Christmas gifts for both grandparents. I may order another copy for me with a hard cover so it will last longer than the soft cover. I was also thinking of creating one of their mini books with the “Glad Tidings” Christmas theme to add the photos from Christmas that weren’t included in this book and won’t be added to the 2013 book at the end of next year. The only thing I would change the next time is to use a cleaner font (rather than script) on some of the descriptive sections and to use a darker color so it is easier to read. But besides that, I love the way it turned out. πŸ™‚

Well, that is my online project I completed! How about you? Did you do a craft you saw online or try out one of those Pinterest recipes? If so, share it with us! Add your post to the link up below!
