* * *

I love End of the Year recap posts that review the things we loved over the past twelve months. Today’s post is a just-for-fun post with all my entertainment faves of 2016.

PLEASE NOTE – The movies, shows or music listed here are simply things I enjoy but I am not necessarily recommending to you. Everyone has their own level of what they feel comfortable watching/listening to/reading, especially my Catholic readers. If it doesn’t seem like something you would enjoy, please skip it!!

My 5 Fave Books I Read in 2016

I logged in 30 books this year (in comparison to last year’s 12) and of my top 5 favorites, only one was published in 2016 so that gives it the #1 spot automatically.

#1

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

Life memoir by Dr. Kalanithi, a neurosurgeon diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. His words were moving and thoughtful and by the time I reached the final epilogue by his wife, I was sobbing. Read my full review here.

#2

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Gripping, edge of my seat, reading-way-too-late-in-the-night novel set in France 1939. Read my full review here.

#3

Big, Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

This was my first Moriarty book and what a page turner it was! I lost many hours of sleep trying to finish this book. Read my full review here.

#4

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

This book was also set in WWII and was riveting and heartbreaking. Read my full review here.

#5

The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman

There is a lot of heartache and no Hallmark ending but the story pulled me in and had me questioning what I wanted to happen vs what should happen. Read my full review here.

* * *

Honorable Mention

Lizzy and Jane by Katherine Reay

I’ve read 3 of Katherine’s books so far and this one is my favorite. (Read my full review here.)

My 5 Fave Movies of 2016

I have to admit that I love going to the movies but I spent years never walking into a theater when the kids were little. I just couldn’t get away or was too tired to try. But now that they are older, twice a month Brian lets me slip out of the house while he puts them to bed so I can unwind and get lost into another world for two hours.

Out of the 24 movies I watched this year, there were only a small handful that really moved me (#1-3 below.) For the 4th and 5th position I debated between a number of movies that I enjoyed (Light Between Oceans, Suicide Squad, Legend of Tarzan, Conjuring 2, Love & Friendship, Captain America, The Choice) but they weren’t “omgsh, I have to buy that when it is available so I can watch it again and again.” Since I had to choose for this post, these are my picks.

#1

hacksaw_ridge_poster

Hacksaw Ridge

This war movie was surprisingly my favorite movie of the year. Although the graphic nature isn’t for everyone, Andrew Garfield did an excellent job portraying conscientious objector Desmond Doss who saved 75 men in Okinawa without firing a single shot. Doss’ conviction, strong faith and incredible heroism was truly amazing. (Rated R for graphic war violence.)

* * *

#2

rogue_ones

Rogue One

I am a sucker for Star Wars movies (as long as you don’t mention Jar Jar) but I had my doubts whether or not I’d like this stand alone installment. However, I was thoroughly satisfied with the story, action and heart of Rogue One. Star Wars has stolen my heart again. (Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action.)

* * *

#3

the_jungle_book_2016 The Jungle Book

I took Andrew to see this and I think I landed out enjoying it as much (if not more) as he did. The story was captivating and the special effects were enthralling. I was completely swept into the movie and it held my attention the entire time. It went beyond what I expected from a “kids” film. (Rated PG for some sequences of scary action and peril.)

* * *

#4

sully

Sully

I am fascinated by true stories that show characters dealing with over the top situations that would crush the average person. Are these people really above average or are they average people pushed to be great? Either way, Sully falls into that category of a seemingly regular guy accomplishing something incredible. (Rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language.)

* * *

#5

?

I’m saving the #5 spot because there are still a couple more movies I’d like to see from 2016 including The Lion, Manchester by the Sea, Arrival, Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts. (For the record, I have never read or seen any of the Harry Potter books or movies. However, Bella and I decided we will be reading/seeing them over 2017. I’m looking forward to it.)

My 5 Fave New TV Shows of 2016

 #1

masterpieceMasterpiece

Masterpiece takes the top spot because 90% of the time, I absolutely love their programing. Favorites include the final season of Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Poldark (despite my anger at that storyline), Endeavor, Home Fires, Inspector Lewis, Wallander and more.  These programs could have easily taken my top 5 spots had they all been shown in 2016.

#2

the-crown The Crown

Rivaling Masterpiece programming is The Crown. This biopic costume drama is amazing – the acting, costumes and cinematography are excellent. Definite fave.

#3

xthisisusThis Is Us

After the first episode of This Is Us, I was hooked. The show is well written, has great acting and is a constant emotional roller coaster. If you were a fan of Parenthood and don’t mind a touch of sap and moral lessons, you’d probably like this. I love it.

#4

speechless-abc-tv-series-key-art-logo-740x416Speechless

I find this quirky family show hilarious. The characters are well wounded with good qualities and faults and they deal with life’s difficulties in a humorous, honest and sometimes in an over the top irreverent way.

#5

tv_1

(Tied)

Brian and I love a good thriller/mystery type show and while Designated Survivor is not perfect, it has kept our attention as we try to figure out who you can trust. Plus, it has Kiefer Sutherland. Enough said.

American Housewife won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I can’t help but laugh at the main characters sass and sometimes flawed persona. I think I can relate to her feeling like an odd man out since I’m a plus sized chips and salsa gal living in a skinny champagne and oyster town.

Last minute update: Brian and I just started watching the The Man from the High Castle and after two episodes I am enthralled. Plus I still have to watch Stranger Things. Those two make take a Top 5 Spot. 😉

I love End of the Year recap posts but the photo year in review is my favorite! Dwija over at House Unseen hosted the link-up in the past but has passed the baton to me. So let’s get to it!

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_jan2

January is the month of fresh starts and new resolutions. Along with the usual get healthier and better organize my house resolutions, I added some fun ones like read more books and write more letters. I’m happy to say I did both! (The books and letters…that is.) 😉

March was a difficult month. My father-in-law had another stroke and slowly became more ill. We spent every day with him and prepared the kids for the worse.

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_apr

In April the birds were chirping and the flowers blooming but our hearts were heavy with grief at the passing of Dad/Opa. It was bittersweet since we were happy that his suffering was done but it was heartbreaking to be without him.

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_may1

In May, I got a much needed break from all the stress of the previous months. My sister was pregnant with her first child and Bella and I decided to make a mom and daughter road trip to attend her baby shower in SoCal. We first spent a day at our favorite spot – Disneyland. Then we spend the weekend with my family for the party. Our time together was like a balm for my soul. Plus, Brian and the little boys were pleased to have a guys weekend without any girls around. 😉

I have to cheat a little and add another photo for May since it was such a big event…

Andrew made his First Communion and we couldn’t have been more proud. 🙂

In June I kept thinking about my baby girl and how it was not too long ago that she was in the 1st grade and now suddenly…

Bella is graduating from the 8th grade and preparing for High School!  Sniff.

And again I am cheating with another photo…

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_jun3

In June we also took our annual trip to Lake Tahoe but it was overshadowed by worry since it was discovered that my mom had cancer. I wanted to cancel the trip and be with her but she insisted that we go on the trip and send her photos and videos to giver her moral support as she prepared for surgery to have the cancer removed. It was beautiful but emotionally stressful.

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_jul

In July I was a bundle of nerves. I was still coping with the loss of my father-in-law, worrying about my mom’s health, waiting for Brian to get results for his own cancer screening and it seemed like world news was filled with tragedy. I could have lost it but thankfully life with these three little guys kept me busy. I was forced to laugh and be playful just to keep up with them. Plus, they reminded me to enjoy the sweet little moments because in the end they are what matters most in life.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_aug

In August I didn’t take many photos! However, I did celebrate another year of life, was thankful that Brian’s cancer testing came back clean, was pleased that my mom was recovering well, and was in denial that Bella was starting high school. 😉

RevolutionofLove.com - eoy_2016_sep

In September, the kids always celebrate Grandparents Day at school and for the last few years my parents have driven up from SoCal to attend. We assumed my mom would not be able to make the trip this year with her recovery but she and my dad surprised us when they decided to make the trip. It was my mom’s first trip since her surgery. I was as elated as the kids.

This month definitely needs two photos since this happened…

Online Daybook / 7 QT: Holiday Season 2016

RevolutionofLove.com - logo_online_daybook_1

~ 1 ~

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • Surviving the morning taking each of the boys Christmas shopping so they could buy presents for their siblings.
  • Weather that is cool enough to feel Christmasy but warm enough for the boys to play football in the driveway.
  • A few moments to myself to sit down and blog after a month hiatus.
  • The love of family and friends.
  • Food on the table, a roof over our head and material blessings we often take for granted.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Those who have lost loved ones recently.
  • Those who are out of work or homeless.
  • Those who find the holidays more depressing than cheerful.
  • Victims of violence, racism and abuse and for the conversion of their oppressors.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

I already shared this on IG and Facebook for anyone who does not follow me there, I am posting it here as well because it seemed to touch a nerve with many. It was written on Tuesday.

This morning as I was coming home from dropping my kids off at school, I starting thinking about a happy memory of my father-in-law and then a deep sadness filled my heart because this is our first Christmas without him. I tried to hold back the tears until I got home and could let them pour out. After a good cry I sat down to read today’s Blessed Is She devotion. I had to laugh when I saw that they were my own words (since I wrote the devotion this day) talking about feeling pain during a joyful season. Ironic. So I am taking my own advice and pouring my pain out to God and letting him embrace me in his peace. I’ll also be offering up a rosary tonight for all of you who are feeling a heaviness of heart. If you’d like me to pray for you by name, feel free to comment below.

Around the House… / Family Chit Chat…

Although there have been some moments of tears and the usual loud chaos, there have been some sweet moments this Advent/ Christmas season.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_advent

Quiet time with God. Confession – I did a lot better when Advent started. I need to get back to this with one week left of Advent!

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_a

This is hands down one of the kids’ favorite Advent activity.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_fam

Tree decorating is one of my favorite Christmas activities.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_tree

The finished product. 🙂

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_letters

I’m a sucker for old school handwritten Christmas cards.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_coolkies

We celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with sweet bread. 🙂

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_list

Confession: I HATE when people just rip open Christmas presents and there is chaos. I like to watch as each gift is opened. My joy is seeing their face as they get something they really wanted. However, the family doesn’t want to have to watch one person at a time open gifts. As a compromise, I came up with a system of wrapping the gifts in coordinating paper so they can each open the gift with (for example) the red paper and snowmen. All those are the sport gifts – a football, a soccer ball, hockey sticks. It means I take a little longer to organize before I start wrapping gifts but the joy I get on Christmas morn is worth it. ( Yeah, I know. #nerd.)

Family Chit Chat…

We are all dong well and feeling very blessed this Christmas. The beginning half of the year was really rough for us but it is ending with a lot of joy.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_dl_collage

Over Thanksgiving, we enjoyed a couple of days at Disneyland then we spent Thanksgiving at my parents’ house.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_ba

Matthew and I helped Grandma/ Mom cook in the kitchen.

RevolutionofLove - odb_12_19_16_ba2

I spent time with my new nieces and nephews. (I overheard two of sister’s kids say, “Which one is Aunt Bobbi?” The other said, “She’s the one that looks like mom but with the crazy glasses.” LOL!

It was especially touching because my mom was happy and healthy surrounded by the ones she loves most, including my parents’ 15 grandchildren. What a blessing!

In the Kitchen…

It’s leftovers week. I am trying to clean out the freezer and fridge so there’s a lot of breakfast dinners and weird combo dinners. 😉

Reading…

I’m almost finished with the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge.

This month I completed a book you should have read in school. – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

…and a book published before you were born. – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_book

For “A Book I Own but Never Read” I dusted off The Christmas Shoes by Donna Van Liere. Shall I admit that I sobbed at the end?

Only one category left. 🙂

  • A book you can finish in one day.

Watching…

(TV)

The usual faves including: This Is Us, Speechless, Big Bang Theory, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor and American Housewife.

I watched Gilmore Girls with great expectation and came away with mixed feelings. Parts of it – I loved but the whole Rory/Logan storyline sucked. Seriously? 10 years have gone by and there is no growth in maturity. Rory was content to be the “other woman” again with a man willing  to cheat on his fiance? Ugh. I hated that and not because I am #teamjess.  I would have been happy if she was with Logan under more committed circumstances. Well, I do hope they decided to continue the story. I think there is definitely an audience for it!

We are almost done with The Crown. And last night we re-watched The King’s Speech as a tie in.

Listening to …

Although I am a sucker for Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole, the boys love my old Relient K Christmas album. Sleigh Ride is one of my favorite non-religious Christmas songs. (Even though I have minimal experience with sleighs or snow) 😉

A Favorite Advent Tradition: A Christmas Letter to Baby Jesus (Instead of Santa)

Revolution of Love Blog - letter_to_jesus_logo

For couple years we have been doing letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa.

RevolutionofLove.com - cwa_12_9_16_st_nick2

The boys were hard at work with their letters last night. I posted this photo on social media yesterday and have gotten many requests for a copy of the letter. I am reposting the original post where I give the details and links to print out your own letter.

RevolutionofLove.com - cwa_12_9_16_st_nick

We have the boys fill out their letters and put them in their empty shoes by the door on the eve of St. Nicholas Day. They wake up to find their letters gone and treats instead. One St. Nick’s day we didn’t get our letters done so we left a little note telling St. Nick thanks for the treats and to please take these letters to Baby Jesus with him.

Also, there is no need to tie this into St. Nicholas Day. These letters can be filled out any time during Advent. You could stick them in Jesus’ stocking (if He has one) or make a little gift box for Jesus where you place the letters inside. Or just place them under the tree or on the mantle to be found missing in the morning. Do as much or as little as fits your family right now. 🙂  Either way, enjoy!

clip_art_christmas_1

Happy feast day of St. Nicholas! My Instagram is overflowing with lovely photos of Catholic homes displaying children’s shoes filled with treats. My home? Not so much. It seems I am always a day late and dollar short and in our home St. Nicholas works in a delayed time zone and we put out our shoes the NIGHT of his feast day because Mama Elf was not quite ready. Truth be told, we are trying out a new Advent tradition today and I wanted it to coincide with the feast of St. Nicholas so our shoes will go out tonight.

A few years back, I asked some fellow Catholic moms how they keep Christ in Christmas. A friend shared with me how she has her kids write letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa. She wrote:

An old Catholic custom is the writing of “Christmas Letters” by the children. These letters, addressed to the Child Jesus (NOT Santa Claus) are written or dictated by the little ones some time before Christmas. They contain their wishes concerning Christmas presents, petitions for various intentions, and a promise of sincere effort to please Our Lord in preparation for Christmas. When they go to bed, the children put their letters on the windowsill, from where “angels” take them during the night to bring them to the Child Jesus in heaven.

This charming custom helps the parents to impress on the minds of their little ones the importance of a sincere spiritual preparation and at the same time great confidence in God who is concerned with our temporal and spiritual needs. Parents who favor this custom will often be deeply touched when they discover that some of their children put more stress on spiritual graces than on material gifts even on an occasion like this. It can also alert parents to the need for more guidance and direction toward this goal. (From LD of CA)

I loved that idea and every year I said, “This year we will do the same!” I think I’ve since had two more kids but still have not tried it. But today is the day!

The boys still believe in Santa and they wanted to write their wish lists but I liked the idea of a letter to Baby Jesus so I incorporated the two. I put together a simple form letter that I could print off and give everyone to fill out. Here is what it looked like. (The link for the PDF is below. There is also a second version with no reference to Santa.)RevolutionofLove.com - rol_baby_jesus_letter

They spent time today thinking about what they would do as a gift to Baby Jesus.

revolution of love blog - jesus_letter_2John-Paul’s gift was to set the table without complaining. (I’m looking forward to that one.) 😉

They chose a person they would especially pray for during Advent.

revolution of love blog - jesus_letter_1Andrew chose his Uncle Mick stationed in Afghanistan.

Lastly, they wrote what gifts they would like Santa to bring them on Christmas morning when we have Jesus’ birthday party (complete with cake. ;-))

revolution of love blog - jesus_letter_3Matthew has his heart set on Ezra from Star Wars Rebels.

When they were done, they folded up their letters and put them in their shoes for St. Nicholas to deliver to Baby Jesus. Tomorrow morning they will find their letters gone and their treats instead.

If you’d like to print of a copy, here is the Letter to Baby Jesus. Also, I made a second version for those who don’t want the Santa aspect. It can be found here. Enjoy. 🙂

UPDATE: When I posted this seven years ago, I had of house of littles. Now I have a house of preteens and teenagers.

However, we still love the idea of writing a letter to Baby Jesus, so I made an updated teen/adult version. You still choose some spiritual (or corporal) act you’ll offer to Jesus. You choose someone to pray for during Advent and instead of asking for a wrapped gift, you can write down what you are hoping to receive from Jesus this Christmas season. (ie. Peace in your heart, the ability to forgive someone who has hurt you, healing [physical or mental], etc.) You can download a PDF of the letter here.

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • A quiet morning without a packed schedule where I could spend a few moments blogging.
  • The grace of Confession. ( I needed it!)
  • A productive weekend, catching up on many of my To Do’s.
  • A date with my honey.
  • This morning’s school assembly where Andrew won a “Good Citizenship” award for the First Quarter.
  • For the love of family and friends.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Victims of violence, racism and abuse and for the conversion of their oppressors.
  • Healing of our country and for our president-elect, that he helps facilitate that healing.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

In November, I usually post new goals for November and December but I really want to just continue working on my Fall goals until the end of the year. I will evaluate my progress and update those goals in January.

Around the House…

RevolutionofLove.com - ond_11_14_16_b

Yesterday I was complaining to Brian about how much time I spend in the kitchen – I feel like my whole evening is consumed with making dinner, which takes longer when you try to cook with more whole foods, and then all the time to wash all the pots and pans and dishes before I turn around and immediately start making lunches for the next day. I was fed up with it but as I was grumbling and washing, God nudged me and reminded me that all these dirty dishes meant that we had plenty to eat, we had lots of people gathered to share a meal and conversation with and I had running water and my own kitchen to get everything done. Suddenly I started feeling like I had little to complain about and much more to be thankful for. I guess I need to keep working this month on an attitude of gratitude!

Family Chit Chat…

For the feast of All Soul’s Day Andrew’s class did a presentation at Mass. Here is my St. Andrew. I am so proud of him for memorizing his lines, bravely going up in front of the church and speaking clearly about his saint. For someone who has gone to speech therapy for years, this was a huge accomplishment. 🙂

On All Souls Day we prayed for family and friends who have died, especially our beloved Dad/Opa.

I spend hours pouring over all the numerous propositions on the California ballot. (You seriously want me to vote on whether porn actors should wear condoms?!!) Sigh. Pass the chocolate.

RevolutionofLove.com - ond_11_14_16_ba

I voted. A week later I am still in shock over our president elect. I keep waiting for someone to jump out and yell, “Psych!”

There has been so much commentary about the election, I am not going to say anything different from what I have already stated. Our mission remains the same – love God and each other. We can change the world one heart at a time.

And for a bit of humor, if Leslie Knope moved to California, she wouldn’t have to worry about the marijuana issue any more.

In the Kitchen…

I haven’t made my weekly menu yet but over the holidays, I’d love to try this recipe – A healthier version of carrot cake banana bread with cream cheese frosting. Yum!

Reading…

I only have two months to finish the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge. I still have these four categories left to fill by the end of the year. I’m working on these two this month:

A book you should have read in school. – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

A book published before you were born. – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Next month I’ll have to tackle these last two categories. 🙂

  • A book you can finish in one day.
  • A book you own but have never read.

Watching…

(TV)

The usual faves including: This Is Us, Speechless, Big Bang Theory, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor and American Housewife.

I finally gave up on The Walking Dead. I kept trying to hold on and hope it returns to it’s former glory days but I give up.

Next on my “that sucks” list is Poldark. I used to looooove the show and the Poldark character but after Sunday’s episode I am ready to join Demelza in giving him a few slugs. Ugh.

To make up for it, we have been enjoying the glories Netflix show The Crown. Minus the few bare butt shots they had to throw in (really?), it is an excellent show so far. (We just finished episode 4.)

And for some spiritual nourishment, last night I watch Elizabeth Foss’ Blessed Is She Workshop about Advent. So good! Oh, and if you still haven’t order the Blessed Is She Advent Journal, I share more about it here.

(YOUTUBE)

Do you want to laugh and smile like a fool? Then watch this video all the way through. Fr. Romke, Fr. Manno and Bishop Malloy from the Diocese of Rockford, IL made a parody of  the “Carpool Karaoke” segments made famous by James Corden’s “The Late Late Show.” It is hilarious. (I especially like when they forgot to say grace before eating their ice cream and the look on Bishops’ face as they were singing at the end. LOL. 🙂

Listening to …

During the holidays I don’t listen to my usual music. Instead it’s Christmas carols 24/7. This song from Sixpence None the Richer is still my favorite version of O Come O Come Emmanuel. When I am in the car and the boys are being loud with raucous yells, I press play on this song and they suddenly quiet down and sing along like an angelic boys choir. It’s a freakin Christmas miracle, people! 😉
