Pinterest Party & Link-up (vol 34): Epiphany Party

(Sorry for the delay. This was supposed to be posted Tuesday!)

Welcome to the RoL Pinterest Party. Join me as we link up and share how we made, cooked, baked, crafted, planned, organized, followed or created one of the pins on our Pinterest boards OR share something original that others can pin onto their boards.

Not on Pinterest? No problem. Link-up your own creation to inspire us so we can pin in to our own boards. It can be a recipe, sewing project, Catholic craft, homeschool project, organizing/ homemaking tip, themed birthday party, whatever you’d like.

Don’t have a post ready? The link-up will be open for a month so there’s still time. Plus, feel free to link up a new post or an older post that hasn’t had much traffic lately. 🙂

Epiphany Party // RevolutionofLoveBlog.com - epiphany_11

Since we celebrated the Epiphany this week, I thought it would be appropriate to do this month’s Pinterest Party about the Epiphany party we hosted last year.

We invited a number of local Catholic families so we had Packer football for the guys. (Brian stipulated that I could have a party only if he could still watch his game. 😉 ) We had a simple craft for the kids and the moms didn’t need direction since they know how to fill the hours with conversation and laughter without any help. 🙂

revolution of love blog - epiphany_7

We started out the day with a blessing of our house. There is a long blessing that you can find at Catholic Culture.org –Catholic Prayer: Blessing of the Home on Epiphany. With a big crowd we kept it simple and just said the last part of the blessing:

Leader: Let us pray. Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

We then marked our door.

Epiphany Blessing of the House // Revolution of Love Blog

Laci and Catholic Icing explains the meaning of the markings. (She also has some great Epiphany crafts here.)

Here’s what the chalked markings on the door mean: The “20″ is for the first 2 numbers of the year, the 3 letters are the first Initial of each of the kings (Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar) and the last 2 numbers are the last half of the year. The “C, M, B also stands for the Latin blessing Christius Mansionem Benedicat which means “May Christ Bless this House”.

The writing for 2015 would look like this:

20 + C + M + B + 15

As a small gift to each family, we placed in a ziploc bag a copy of the blessing prayer and a stick of chalk to bless their own house.

revolution of love blog - epiphany_1Once the prayers and blessings were said, the party could start. To keep the food simple, I set up a table with a taco salad bar with the basics – tortilla chips, ground turkey meat, homemade – healthier refried beans, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, guac, salsa and sour cream. I also had the tortilla grill ready to make quesadillas for any of the littles who preferred that.revolution of love blog -epiphany_4

I forgot to take a photo of the table before all the food was devoured but I did get a snap of someone’s taco salad.

revolution of love blog - epiphany_6For the dessert table, we had fruit, Mexican sweet bread and an Epiphany cake

revolution of love blog - epiphany_5 For the epiphany cake, my friend found a bakery (for you locals, it’s Parker Lusseau in Monterey, CA) that made a gluten free version, complete with a little figurine baked inside for someone to find. It was delicious!

revolution of love blog -epiphany_2

When the meal was finished we had simple crafts for the kids. They could make cards or little gift boxes for Baby Jesus.

revolution of love blog - epiphany_3We also had crowns – plain ones to be decorated and colored ones for those who wanted them already complete.

Since it was the beginning of the year, I wanted to do a tradition we often did in our home when we were older kids. We’d each pick out of a hat a card with the name of a saint and a virtue we’d work on that year. It was always a fun activity and sometimes the virtue we’d pick was spot on. (Why did I keep getting patience? I’d ask myself. 😉 )

revolution of love blog -epiphany_10I made a Word document with a saint photo, quote and virtue then cut the cards out. I made enough for each person on the guest list. I separated the cards by groups – moms, dads, teen girls and teen boys, then had the guests chose a random card.

For the moms I picked saints and quote like these:

Love – “Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor… Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.” –Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Perseverance – “Let us love the Cross and let us remember that we are not alone in carrying it. God is helping us. And in God who is comforting us, as St. Paul says, we can do anything.” –St. Gianna Beretta Molla

Greater Love of God – “Pure love is capable of great deeds, and it is not broken by difficulty or adversity. As it remains strong in the midst of great difficulties, so too it perseveres in the toilsome and drab life of each day. It knows that only one thing is needed to please God: to do even the smallest things out of great love – love, and always love.” –St. Faustina

Silence – “We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.” — Blessed Mother Teresa

Prayer – “A soul arms itself by prayer for all kinds of combat. In whatever state the soul may be, it ought to pray. A soul which is pure and beautiful must pray, or else it will lose its beauty; a soul which is striving after this purity must pray, or else it will never attain it; a soul which is newly converted must pray, or else it will fall again; a sinful soul, plunged in sins, must pray so that it might rise again. There is no soul which is not bound to pray, for every single grace comes to the soul through prayer.” –St. Faustina

Make Small Sacrifices for Love of Christ – “Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” –St. Thérèse de Lisieux

For the dads, saints like these:

Forgiveness – “If a man finds it very hard to forgive injuries, let him look at a Crucifix, and think that Christ shed all His Blood for him, and not only forgave His enemies, but even prayed His Heavenly Father to forgive them also.” –Saint Philip Neri

Love – “Real love is demanding. I would fail in my mission if I did not tell you so. Love demands a personal commitment to the will of God.” –Pope John Paul II

Peace – “Keep your soul at peace, in order to be able to be attentive and very faithful to the inner movement of the Holy Spirit.” –Saint Peter Julian Eymard

Patience – “The truly patient man neither complains of his hard lot nor desires to be pitied by others. He speaks of his sufferings in a natural, true, and sincere way, without murmuring, complaining, or exaggerating them.” — St. Francis de Sales

Obedience to God – ”Obedience is a virtue of so excellent a nature, that Our Lord was pleased to mark its observance upon the whole course of His life; thus He often says, He did not come to do His Own will, but that of His Heavenly Father.” –Saint Francis of Sales

Prayer – ‘We must speak to God as a friend speaks to his friend, servant to his master; now asking some favor, now acknowledging our faults, and communicating to Him all that concerns us, our thoughts, our fears, our projects, our desires, and in all things seeking His counsel.’ –St. Ignatius of Loyola

For the teen girls, saints like these:

Purity – “Those whose hearts are pure are the temples of the Holy Spirit.” –St. Lucy

Obedience – “My daughter, know that you give Me greater glory by a single act of obedience than by long prayers and mortifications.” –St Faustina

Pray for the Conversion of Sinners – “I wish, oh Jesus, that my voice could reach to the ends of the world, to call all sinners and tell them to enter into Thy Heart….Oh, if only all sinners would come to Thy Heart!… Come! Come sinners, do not be afraid! The sword of Justice cannot reach you Here!” –St Gemma Galgani

Courage in Living Your Faith – “Proclaim the truth and do not be silent through fear.” — St. Catherine of Siena

Be a Witness for Christ – “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” ― St. Catherine of Siena

For the teen boys, saints like these:

Faithfulness / Fidelity to God – “Fidelity in little things must be the basic rule in striving for holiness,” –Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Courage in Living Your Catholic Faith – “When God is with us, we do not need to be afraid.” –Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

Greater Love for Jesus in the Eucharist – “Do you want many graces? Go and visit the Blessed Sacrament often. Do you want few graces? Visit the Blessed Sacrament rarely. Do you want none at all? Then never pay a visit to the Blessed Sacrament,” –St. Dominic Savio

I think the party was a success. I know we had fun and enjoyed everyone’s company. The moms in our group usually get together but it was nice to do something where the dads and kids were involved too. Hopefully we can host another Epiphany party next year. 🙂

Okay, that was my idea for the month. You can find the Pinterest pin for this party here – http://www.pinterest.com/pin/239676011395224224/.

TV Talk: Downton Abbey, Season 5, Episode 1 Recap

downton_season_5aPhoto credit – pbs.org

(Spoiler Alert! You know the drill.) Well, the time has finally arrived for the US fans to sit down and enjoy another roller coaster season of Downton Abbey. There are many still recovering from the wounds of Matthew’s demise and Anna’s rape and although we may be tempted to swear off DA, here we are again ever hopeful that our favorite characters will find happiness and bracing ourselves for the drama (and traumas) to come.

The first episode picks up in 1924 and the changing times are reflected in the women’s changing wardrobes. (The guys pretty much look the same.) If the first episode is any indication of what is to come, the theme of this season may be sex and secrets, both upstairs and downstairs.

Odd Man Out

The show opens up with Edith “can-my-life-suck-any-more” Crawley secretly watching her baby girl, who has been left in the kind care of farmer Drewe and his wife. Although, we soon see that Edith is not keeping her presence secret. Later she is sitting at the kitchen table cooing over little Marigold. (Someone likes flowery names – Rose, Daisy, Marigold…) I understand that Edith longs to spend time with her daughter but does she really think no one will get suspicious about the fact that she visits the family regularly and fawns on “their” little daughter endlessly, to the discomfort of the rest of the family? Surely, her secret will come out soon. Drewe did guess her secret from the beginning but kept it to himself. However, now his wife thinks that Edith is coming around frequently because she has a crush on her husband.  This smells like disaster. Regardless, Drewe has a plan for Edith to “live the truth without telling the truth.”

Meanwhile, Robert “nobody-loves-me” Crawly is bemoaning his new nickname (Donk) and the Labour Government. He also expresses his displeasure that he was not only overlooked at the school, but he was not asked to be the chairman on a war memorial being set up. Instead, the villagers chose Carson. It was a blow, although he tried to handle it with grace. Luckily for him, Carson only agreed to head the committee if Robert was named the patron.

Tom “will-I-ever-fit-in” Branson still feels like the odd man out. He is such a likable character, I wish he would find the right women to capture his restless and still healing heart. Unfortunately the closest thing he has to a love interest is the annoying school marm Miss Bunting. Last season I was not a big fan but I tried to keep an open mind.  I understand that she has her own opinions and is opposed to the ways of Downton and that she is supposed to spark Tom’s political zeal of old, but when she was unexpectedly invited to a dinner at the Abbey, her brash rudeness was unparallelled. She manged to offend everyone she talked to and was unable to hold her tongue, or at least soften her tone, once. The only bright point was when Carson shut her down after she do rudely insulted her host. No, I do not like this one at all.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me A Match!

Who would have thought that Isobel Crawley would be tangled up in a love triangle that has been much more fun than last season’s Ivy, Daisy, Alfred triangle. Last year we had hopes that Isobel and the Doctor would hit it off but instead Dicky “yes-my-name-is-ridiculous” Merton has been in hot pursuit of Isobel. Gal-pal and favorite Grandmama Violet didn’t seem to give it much mind until she realized that if Isobel married Lord Merton she would actually rise in rank above Violet. Violet takes matters in hand by playing her own version of match.com and tries to pair Lord Merton with Lady Shackleton. (Which made me want to go back and watch the old Sense and Sensibility). The last time we saw Lady Shackleton was during the disastrous luncheon that Spratt sabotaged in fear that Mosley would take his job. Ol’ Spratt the Brat was still spreading his charm as he hilariously displayed his wordless annoyance that he was required the indignity of treating the doctor as a human being on more than one occasion.

Speaking of our favorite odd man out, Mosley has been feeling his age, and a growing attraction to Baxter. In an attempt to recapture his youth, he dyed his hair with typical Mosley results. There were many comments about the situation but the best was from Robert who said, “Mosley, you look very Latin all of a sudden. Do you have any Latin blood?” LOL.

However, Mosley is also the hero in tonight’s episode by giving the best piece of advice to Baxter. Thomas “I’m-a-pain-in-the-arse-but-you-love-me-anyway” Barrow continued to harass Baxter into revealing any secrets she may have overheard, particularly one involving Mr. Bates and Lord Gillingham’s former steward. (Baxter knows that Bates took a journey that he’d deny taking.) Mr. Mosley rescued Baxter from Thomas’ interrogation a number of times but Thomas finally managed to trap Baxter and his threats brings her to tears. If she did not revel what she knew, then Thomas would tell her secret to Lady Cora that evening. Mosley encouraged Baxter to tell Cora her secret before Thomas did. In movies, this plot line usually has the confessor being thwarted from revealing the truth until it is too late. I feared the same would happen here, but alas, Baxter was able to speak to Cora and pour out her heart.

She revealed that Thomas is friends with her sister and years ago she was working in London as a lady’s maid for a Mrs. Benton. After six months there, she stole jewelry from her employer and tried to make it look like a burglary. She was found out but she didn’t have the jewelry anymore. As a result, Baxter spent three years in prison for the crime. Before Cora could respond to her revelation, Robert came in the room. Later, however, Cora further questioned Baxter and tried to get more details about the situation. Baxter was obviously hiding the real reason she stole the jewelry in the first place. I assume Baxter does not tell the whole story in order to protect someone or to not seem like she is rationalizing her crime. Either way, I am certain this is not the last we have heard about it. Lady Cora was shocked and disappointed but she did not dismiss Baxter right away. Instead she said she would think about it. Later that night when Thomas approached Cora, she turned the tables on him and reprimanded him for keeping the secret from her when he recommended Baxter for the job. She left him wondering what repercussions his scheming will have.

Playing with Fire

Jimmy “boy toy” Kent is back in bromance with Thomas and there was plenty of, as Carson puts it, smutty deliberations brewing downstairs. Jimmy was being pursued by his former employer Lady “I-put-the-C-in-Cougar”Anstruther (played perfectly by Carolyn Bingley of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.) Jimmy tried to put her off but Lady A would have none of that. She pushed her way into the Crawley household and made up a suspicious lie about her car not working so she could spend the night at their home. Of course, it is a ruse in order to trap Jimmy. He, of course, takes the bait and with Thomas’ help slipped into her bedroom after hours. However, Jimmy was not the only one scandalously slipping into a lady’s bedroom.

Lady Mary continues to be courted but, to the dismay of #TeamBlake, Charles was nowhere to be seen! Instead, Gillingham is at the forefront and she admitted that she does love him in her “cold and unfeeling way.” Mary is still sorting out her feelings but she has moved away from wondering if she can love again after Matthew’s death and instead is concerned about whether or not her future husband will please her in bed. (“What could be more important?” she asks. Um, I can think of a few things that could be more important, but that is another post entirely! ) It may seem an odd transition but I suppose it is a reflection of the changing morals, particularly in the roaring 20’s. Her conversation with Anna about the merits of pre-marital sex left Anna saying, “I am afraid I am entirely too old fashioned for you, m’lady.” Good girl. 😉

This conversation laid down the groundwork for an after hours knock on Lady Mary’s bedroom door. Gillingham had his own proposition. He asked Lady Mary to go away with him for a week, a tete a tete that would result in them becoming lovers. This whole conversation seemed very odd. I could imagine it happening in a different situation with different people but it seemed out of character for Gillingham to suggest something that would put Lady’s Mary’s reputation at such risk. Times may be changing, but the consequences of such actions would still be keenly felt. However, drama must march on and I suspect that Mary will partake of the forbidden fruit. Let’s just hope they fair better than Mr. Pamuk.

Meanwhile, Edith was feeling the repercussions of her own dalliance as she mourns the presumed death of Gregson and the absence of little Marigold.  She threw Gregson’s book towards the fireplace and cried herself to sleep. Little did she know that the book caught fire. Luckily, Thomas was still in the hallway and was able to rescue Lady Edith from her bedroom. He tried to warn Jimmy next but Robert beat him to it and found Jimmy and Lady A in bed together.

The fire raged on but thankfully they managed to put it out (with indoor water hoses??) and rescued everyone in time. In the end, Jimmy was sacked and Thomas once again, saved his hide and comes out smelling like a rose with a very sharp thorn.

In the closing scene, Farmer Drewe who was leading the firemen, told Lady Edith he had a plan for her and Marigold. Unbeknownst to them, Mrs. Hughes was nearby and although it is unknown how much of the conversation she heard, from the look on her face, she heard enough to make her suspicious.

So what did you think?? Did you like the episode? Did it seem to jump too quickly from scene to scene at times? What predictions do you have for future episodes. (But, please,. give no real spoilers!)

Favorite Quotes

  • Violet: There’s nothing simpler than avoiding people you don’t like. Avoiding one’s friends, that’s the real test.

  • Mrs. Patmore: It would be a bit sad if she had no secrets at her age.

  • Lady Shackelton: “Of course a single peer with a good estate won’t be lonely long, if he doesn’t want to be.”
  • Violet: “You sound like Mrs. Bennett.”

  • Baxter: “I will tell you the story one day. But I am loathe to forfeit your good opinion and I know I would.”
  • Carson: “No you won’t. You don’t trust me yet but I am on your side.” (Aw, I love these two together.)

  • Violet: “Principles are like prayers. Noble, of course, but awkward at a party.”

  • Tom: “I am not a hater. I don’t hate anyone. Least of all you.”
  • Robert: “Well, that is a more cheerful note to say good night.”

  • Thomas: “Well. So Lady Mary is not so ladylike after all.”
  • Jimmy: “Me next.”

  • Mary: “Lady Edith chose to set fire to her room, but we’re all fine.”

Random Thoughts

— Was Bates deliberately pumping information from Lord Gillingham about his former steward? Are they going to rehash this story?

— Are Anna and Bates trying (unsuccessfully) to have a baby?

— Will Daisy seek tutoring help from Miss “Boudicca of the North Riders” Bunting?

— I really like Farmer Drewe (even if he is keeping a secret from his wife) and how he is tying to help Lady Edith but is he as good as he seems? I’d hate for him to have an ulterior motive or to later fall for Edith since he is a married man.

Okay, your turn! Share your thoughts in the comments!!

2014 Year in Review with Favorite Posts

I was supposed to post this yesterday but life happened and I never got a chance. New year, same story. 🙂 I don’t mind really. I have been having such fun looking back at all the posts I made this year and rereading my thoughts over the past months. God has brought us a long way and we are all still alive and well to talk about it.

This post is really for myself. I wanted to be able to see at a glance what I wrote about in 2014 and arranging the top posts and other highlights of each month makes it easier to look back in years to come. And if someone happens to want to click back on something here that interests them, well, that’s just cake. So sit back and relax and when you’re done you can join me on the couch to watch the rose parade with a cup of hot chocolate. Happy new year! 🙂

If you don’t read the whole post, I sum it up in the last paragraph:

We’d be a lot happier if we stopped comparing ourselves to each other and accept that we’re all in this together and each of us reflects the love of God to the world. Like flowers in a garden, some of us are delicate roses and others are are robust sunflowers. Some are perky daisies and others are shy violets. Regardless, we are are all reflections of God’s beautify and creativity. Embrace your abilities as a mom. Work on the areas you need improvement with the confidence that God will give you all grace and tools you need. Support your fellow sisters in this difficult yet incredibly important job of raising our families because despite what you may think, you’re a really good mom! 🙂

12 in 2014: A Year in Review in Photos

revolution of love blog - 12 in 2014

It’s that fun time of the year when we look back over the past 12 months and relive the favorite moments, as well as the more difficult ones. Today I am linking up with Dwija for a look at the top 12 photos of 2014.

Revolution of Love Blog - jan_2014January marked our second battle with Brian’s cancer. Here he is receiving Anointing of the Sick before his scheduled surgery and following chemo. (We are also replenishing our supply of holy water!) It was a difficult time but Brian’s incredible faith not only kept him going but was an inspiration to me and the kids. Everyone’s prayers and offers of help was appreciated more than words could express. Through it all, our love of family, friends and each other grew even stronger, proving that good can come out of bad. On the day of his surgery, I started journaling my thoughts here.

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - feb_2014With Brian’s health, that meant a change in all our diets. We (mostly) eliminated white flour, processed sugar and junk food. However, the kids still wanted their Sunday morning treat after Mass so I tried new recipes with whole wheat and more natural sugars. It is not the easiest thing to cook from scratch and use whole foods but after awhile it gets easier and our tastes buds have gotten used to eating healthier. To be honest, after this season of breaking the rules and eating sweets and treats, I am tired of feeling ill and sluggish and look forward to getting back on track!

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - march_2014This year marked the last year that my little Matthew was home with me 24/7. My morning walks were accompanied by my little super hero. Once September came around, he started preschool part time. It was a weird adjustment at first but now I am enjoying combining alone time with kiddo time. 🙂

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - april_2014

This is my favorite photo this year of Andrew, John-Paul and Matthew. I love their playful smiles and I can almost hear their sweet giggles. Although the house is often filled with incredible NOISE, the tender moments like these make it worth it. 😉

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - may_2014

In spring we took an unexpected visit to So Cal to attend my brother’s graduation party and my brother-in-law’s going away party as he was being stationed in Afghanistan. We also made a side trip to one of our favorite places – Disneyland. We were able to time the trip on Brian’s off week from chemo. I love this photo of Brian and Bella. Their smiles reflect how much fun we had that trip. 🙂

* * * * *Revolution of Love Blog - june_2014b

June is one of my favorite months because it means not only is school out but we get to make our annual trip to Lake Tahoe. We’ve been blessed to be able to bring my parents with us for the last couple of years. I treasure this time not only with my sweetheart and sweet peas but my mom and dad too. We always have such a fun time and the day we come home from our trip I am counting the days until we can go back. (Mark your calendar, Mom. Only 173 days to go.) 😉

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - july_2014July means summer vacation and lots of swimming lessons! I snapped a spontaneous photo of the kids and it is now one of the year’s favorite because it captures a little bit of each one’s personality. 🙂

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - aug_2014August started the month I made a goal list and made small steps towards bringing them about. I was making good progress until the holidays hit. Then everything was put aside. Now that the holidays are winding down, I’ll be able to refocus and get back on track.

* * * * *

sept_2014bI love this shot of me and Brian. He finished his last round of chemo and went away for the weekend to attend a Catholic conference. Meanwhile my sister came up for a visit. When Brian returned home my sister watched the kids so we could go out. We had such a lovely date; we felt like newlyweds again. My heart was filled with gratitude that Brian was in my life and that he was feeling better each day. #blessed

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - oct_2014October starts my favorite season of fall and I should have a photo of pumpkin patches and golden leaves but this quick shot I took after a morning walk continues to take my breath away.

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - nov_2014I’ve gotten closer to Our Lady this year. From relying on her to pray for Brian to seeking her help in being a better mom, it is comforting to know there is someone looking out for me and helping me grow closer to God.

* * * * *

Revolution of Love Blog - dec_2014aDecember marked the month of rain for our parched California. I loved when the rain stopped and the sun peaked through the clouds and everything just glistened. So pretty!

 * * * * *

Okay, I cheated on this one. I was done with the post but I decided to add one more. It’s a simple Instagram but it marks my favorite day of this Christmas season.

Revolution of Love Blog - dec_2014b It was the day we put on Christmas music and sat by the twinkling tree as we roasted marshmallows in the fireplace. It was like Christmas magic was sprinkled on the house as there was no wild playing or yelling or arguing over who got more marshmallows.  We just talked and laughed and had fun together. Then as the fire died down and the kids went into the other rooms to play, Brian and I snuggled on the couch and enjoyed each others company. It was the perfect afternoon. They don’t happen often but when they do they are fiercely cherished! 😉

Here’s to hoping that we will have more wonderful memories for 2015! 🙂 A big thanks to Dwija for hosting!

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post – A Year in Review with Favorite Posts. 🙂

Moments of Gratitude…

Today I am especially thankful for

  • A bit of a respite after a busy week(s)
  • All the recent rain.
  • Having 75% of my gift wrapping done.
  • Finally finishing and mailing out our Christmas cards and family letter.
  • Christmas vacation
  • For one more week of Advent. (May I make the most of it!)
  • For 15 years of marriage with the man of my dreams. (Actually he is above and beyond my dreams!)

Praying…

revolution of love blog - cwa_mary_imm

  • For my single friends looking for a holy spouse.
  • For all those suffering from troubled marriages.
  • For those suffering from loss, depression and loneliness during the holidays.
  • For those separated from their loved ones, especially for the military and their families.
  • For the victims of violence and all those affected by it.
  • For peace within the hearts of all people.

On the homefront……

This past week was so crazy. It was packed with school events and being Andrew’s first grade room mom, I also had some special school projects to complete. Friday was my busiest day and I left the house in a whirlwind – the kitchen looked like it exploded. I got everything done but you know how you can go, go, go, go, go and then when you are done you just break down. Yeah, well that was me. On a normal day, the hundred little things that go wrong are expected and dealt with but my nerves were so fried that I couldn’t take it anymore and when Brian got home I handed him the reigns and went to the bathroom for a good cry. Thankfully, that’s all I really needed and I was back to normal.

The next day, the first day of our vacation, I just stood home and turned on the Christmas music and finished my Christmas cards and the last of my packages. The kids worked on their Christmas gifts and the house felt peaceful once again.

Pondering…

The best moments this Advent have been the simple and unexpected things such as…

revolution of love blog - cwa_ba_brm_12_14Unexpectedly joining Bella to sing Christmas carols with her youth group at a local convalescent home.

revolution of love blog - cwa_smoreOr making smores on a cold and rainy day. Matthew was amazed we could have a beach bonfire in our home. (We haven’t used our fireplace much.)

I’m glad we still have one more week of Advent. No matter how good (or bad) the past three weeks have been, we still have the home stretch to refocus our eyes on the Christ Child and make the most of our days before Christmas. 😉

Around the house…

revolution of love blog - cwa_tree_2014Twinkling lights and Christmas smells. (Unless you go into the boys room or the family room. Then it is just mess, mess, mess. Seriously, I have to do another quick charity bin collection before Christmas morning comes!)

Reading…

I haven’t been reading much lately but the two that are on my nightstand (or in my kindle) are…

grace_of_yesThe Grace of Yes: Eight Virtues for Generous Living by Lisa Hendey

book_gone_girlGone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Listening to…

Christmas at Downton Abbey

Normally, I am a hot cocoa and Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole Christmas music type of person but today I was feeling like tea and biscuits with a lovely Christmas choir. Not to mention that Julian Ovenden, who sings a couple of songs, has an amazing voice! He is the actor that plays Mary’s suitor Charles Blake. (#teamblake) I’ve been a fangirl since he was on Foyle’s War and played Foyle’s son Andrew. (I was watching a lot of Foyle’s War when I chose the name of my first born son. ;-)) Cora also sings a couple songs and Carson reads Twas the Night before Christmas. Fun!

Watching…

(At the Movies)

hobbit_3Tonight we will start watching The Hobbit in preparation for our movie night next weekend to see The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.  Although I go to the movies alone regularly (after the kids are asleep), movies out with my sweetie seem to happen only once a year!

(On TV)

Now that our regular shows are on Christmas hiatus we are catching up with past seasons of Downton Abbey in preparation for Season 5, which starts Jan 4th.

(On Youtube)

When Bella and I need a laugh we watch this together.

On the blog…

It’s been quiet with the holidays. 🙂

In the blogosphere…

I haven’t had time to read any of my favorite blogs but since we’re on Christmas vacation now I am hoping to catch up!

However, I do know that over at Blessed Is She.net Monday is my day to share my thoughts on the day’s Scripture readings. Here is a snippet…

In a few short days, Christmas will be here. Every year I resolve to make this a holy Advent and not to get wrapped up in the commercialism or the busyness of the season and really prepare my heart to receive the Christ Child. Inevitably, I reach a point where I am stressing out over everything that I have to finish. My tendency, besides skipping prayer all together, is to rush through my daily devotional so I can check “prayer” off the To Do list and get back to my stressful day.

Today’s Gospel is challenging me to look at this day in a different way by focusing on Mary’s attitude. Today’s Gospel is challenging me to look at this day in a different way by focusing on Mary’s attitude. Here she was newly pregnant and in a situation that was less than ideal—how is she going to explain this to Joseph? What will other people think? What will this mean for her future life? However, instead of stressing, she responds with humility and docility to God’s will.

Plans for the Week…

The obvious things – finish our last minute Christmas prep, Christmas Eve Mass, Christmas/ Jesus’ birthdya party in the morning, Christmas dinner at my in-laws and on the weekend Brian and I will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We debated whether or not to do a fancy dinner but we opted for dinner and a movie instead.It’s more “us.”  😉

Captured…

revolution of love blog - cwa_mvx_rainThe joy of jumping in puddles in the rain.

The kids had their Christmas performances this week and I forgot to bring my “real” camera!

revolution of love blog - cwa_notesIf I don’t leave a note on the door, I tend to forget. Sigh.

So I snapped a few pics on my camera instead so my mom and dad could see them. 🙂revolution of love blog - cwa_collage

Have a blessed Christmas!! 🙂
