Operation Clean and Organize: Vol 12 – Home Management Binder Part 1: My Daily 2012 Planner

Taming the procrastinating, ADD, mess cat within me.

(This post has become so big that I need to divide it into sections. I’ll do the first section today but since the bulk of the work is done, I’ll hopefully post the other 2-3 sections by the end of the week.)

I have been hearing numerous blogging moms talk about their Home Management Binder. It sounded like the perfect thing I needed on my quest to get more organized but the task seemed daunting! What was I supposed to put in it? When would I find the time to make up lists and logs? How can I make it pleasing to the eye so I’d be more likely to actually use it? Well, it took me a while but I think I finally have a system down that will work well for me and my family.

My next big problem was fitting everything into one binder. Rather than having one huge binder, I found it easier to divide my information into my main large binder with the bulk of info and then three smaller binders with specific categories – Finances; Meals, Food & Shopping; and Blogging. I use these smaller ones most often and keep them in the spot where I need them. (ie Food Binder in the kitchen area. Blogging Binder on my computer desk.)

Lastly, I debated whether I should give up my regular planner for a binder To Do List. I tried out a few but wasn’t satisfied. I didn’t want to give up my planner so I tweaked it a bit instead. I’ll break it down below.

Daily Planner

I have been using a planner for as long as I can remember because if I don’t write it down, I guarantee that I will forget to do it. You can see my trusty black and gray planner at the right hand corner of my desk.
For the last couple of years I have been using a Franklin Covey Wire-bound Planner, the Perspectives Weekly style. I liked that the headings are left blank so you can title them for each day of the week (combining Sat & Sun) or divide jobs in categories. I also like to record any spending I did online so I could make sure to subtract it from my budget.

However, I have reached the point where the two pages for one week is not enough room. By Wednesday, I would use up all the space. My planner runs for the school year so I needed a new one for July 2012-June 2013. I decided to switch to the Botanica One-Page-Per-Day Planner.

I love having more room but it did make my planner considerably bulkier. It wasn’t a big issue since it is always on my desk but I needed just a small calendar or notebook for my purse to record appointments and notes when I’m on the go.

I picked up this small calendar/notebook at Target for a few dollars.

It has the months of the year in the front and in the back there are grid and lined pages for notes or drawings. It is perfect to jot things down or write appointments that can later be transferred to my master calendar.

To personalize it a bit, I added some dΓ©cor.

Tomorrow I’ll show you the next binder. πŸ™‚

UPDATE: Since first writing this post, I have switched planners. I now use a Martha Stewart discbound with iheartorganizing planner pages. Here is the new post – A Look at My 2014 Planner

Love Song Link-Up

Hallie at Betty Beguiles has set up a Love Song Link-Up. How fun! It was hard to narrow it down since my “amore playlist” on my ipod is pretty long but here are some of my favorites. Some may not seem like love songs but they hold meaning to why I love my man.

Love Song by The Cure
This is my ringtone for Brian. He makes me whole and I will always love him.

London Calling by The Clash
I love this because when I met Brian he was an ex-seminarian who listened to Gregorian chant. Later I found out he had a passion for the Clash. I love that (somewhat hidden) bit of rebel rock and roll in him.

Sway with Me by Michael Buble
So fun and flirtatious.

Hey Mama by Mat Kearney
I love Mat Kearney. This song reminds me of the man that made me a mama. (BTW, Andrew and JP love this song and ask to hear it all the time as they sing “Hey Mama, hey, hey Mama…” To them it is their Mama kissing them good night.)

Dream by The Cranberries
I’ve listened to the Cranberries for years but this song in particular reminds me of the movie “You’ve Got Mail” about an online romance. I went to see that movie just after receiving a package and love letter in the mail from my own online suitor.

Return to Me by Dean Martin
Being 400 miles away from one another, it was hard to be apart. Brian sent me a cassette (remember those?!) of a Dean Martin album with special emphasis on this song.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder
A week before we were married I finally moved to Carmel and after our wedding I could finally say, “Ooh, baby, here I am. Signed, sealed. delivered. I’m yours.” πŸ˜‰

The Everglow by Mae
“So be here by my side, and watch the stars…”

My Idea of Heaven by Leigh Nash

My honey gives me a taste of heaven on earth.

One and Only by Adele

After all the many years of trying to find love and feeling like giving up, God had mercy on me and gave me my one and only.

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri
I’ve technically only known Brian for a little over 13 years yet it feels like I’ve known him my whole life and more.

You Are loved by Josh Groban
This song always brings a tear to my eye. It first reminds me of God’s love and how I had to fall in love with Him first before I was ready to find the man who would love me more than any other woman in the world.

“Hey Girl” Memes, Period Drama Style

Hey there! I usually don’t post on a Sunday but Bella received a free ticket to see Brave and she really wanted to see it again so Brian took her this time. Meanwhile, the baby is asleep and the boys are playing quietly (shocking) so I have a little time for fun on the computer. Yay!

I know you have probably seen all those Ryan Gosling “hey girl” memes but have you seen the Period Drama ones with men such as Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bates and Matthew Crawley? Period Movies posted a bunch on her facebook page. Here are some of my favorites. Enjoy!

(These Darcy ones – and Sherlock – are from Honestly Allyson.

Love!

(I don’t know if Sherlock really fits in with the rest of these gentlemen but I had to add him since I love Sherlock. Now we just need one with Watson.)

Other favorites…

Love!

LOL! Love!

(I haven’t watched North and South in ages. I need to pull out my DVD and swoon again. πŸ˜‰

{pretty, happy, funny, real} – vol 37: Summer Fun 2

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Here are some favorite Instram photos from the past week.

{pretty}

Taken in Monterey near the wharf.

There were sea lions resting on rocks and playing in the water. Andrew saw a sea lion’s tail sticking out of the water and he insisted that it was actually a shark’s fin. He is still talking about how he saw a shark yesterday.

I like the flowers around this Doggy Therapist office (I’m not joking about the therapist!) And after your depressed pooch’s therapy you can take him to the Doggy Spa across the street.

{happy}

Matthew was happy because he was able to climb up on the kitchen table. I nearly had a heart attack. (The photo is blurry because I was reaching for him as I snapped the shot and because he was literally jumping up and down.)

37b1.jpg

I much prefer when he climbs into something than on top of something but who can resist that happy smile??

{funny}

Usually I hand feed Matthew his yogurt, but on this morning he reached over and grabbed JP’s yogurt and fed himself. He was happy and proud.

Weigh-in Wednesday: Vol 9 – Updates & Add Your Link

**Sharing the triumphs and missteps on my journey towards a healthier physical, emotional and spiritual life.**

Physical Update

walk_logo2.jpg

My walking program of 100 Miles in 100 Days has been going well. My best days are when I am able to walk in the early morning and go to the beach. It is a little over 2 miles and still a workout for me. Other days I have a tight schedule and have to fit in my walking whenever or wherever I can. I just make sure my weekly total is at least 7 miles to even it out.

The other day I was running errands all day so I would park at the far end of the parking lot and walk to the various places I went to.

half_13.png

As for the weight loss, that is a little tougher. I had my first weigh in on Monday and I lost one pound but I know I could have done better because I haven’t been tracking anything I eat. The only thing about walking or exercising more is that I think, “Oh, I can eat that or have a little more of this…” and defeat the whole purpose of trying to get healthier. So yeah, I need to work on that and start journaling my eating again.
Spiritual Update: I didn’t do the book discussion for Style, Sex, and Substance today. I’ll most likely post the next chapter discussion in another week or two. (You can read the last discussion here.)
Besides that, this week I’ve been trying to be more positive when chaos breaks out in the house. Usually I get frustrated and upset but I’ve been trying to take a deep breath, curtail the problem and find the humor of it all. It makes the household so much more pleasant but it is not always easy! But I’m working on it. πŸ˜‰
How about you? What have you been working on this week? Share your goals, your progress or your missteps. You can share in the comment box or link your own blog post. I look forward to hearing from you! (Note: For some reason WordPress users haven’t been able to comment so you may need to sign in using google or yahoo, etc instead.)
