CFCA: Our first letter from Abigal

A couple months ago I posted about Abigal, the little girl in Mexico that we sponsored through Christian Foundation for Children & Aging (CFCA). Yesterday we received our first letter from her and I was so touched.

Abigal tells us about her life and her family but it is the closing paragraph that brought tears to my eyes. The translation reads:

“I promise I will make a big effort in the school so that you become proud of me. I will pray every day for you from now on so that God takes care of you and pours blessings upon you wherever you are. I have to close for now. I love you.
Your sponsored friend,
Abigal”

This little girl living in poverty is praying for me, that I will be blessed. It’s amazing. I am trying to help out by giving to someone else and instead I am the one who receives the blessings. God is so good.
This sponsorship has also been a great family project! We pray for Abigal and her family every night during our decade-rosary. Bella especially has a soft spot for Abigal since she doesn’t have a sister of her own. She writes to her and draws her pictures.

I am hoping to save enough money to sponsor a second child in the future – a little boy that our boys can write to.
There are many, many more kids looking for sponsors, as well as teens and elderly. Advent will be here before you know it. As you prepare to welcome the Christ Child in your heart, prayerfully consider welcoming one of these children into your heart as well.

“Truly, I saw to you, as you do it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

Here are just a few kids waiting for someone to help them!

The Next Iron Chef 2011

Are you ready for some cooking drama?? Good because tonight starts The Next Iron Chef 4. This is the first year that I actually know (almost) all the chefs.

Also, a bit of trivia that I just learned from a friend, last year’s Iron Chef winner Marc Forgione is the great-great-great nephew of Francesco Forgione, otherwise known as Padre Pio. Very cool.
Happy watching! And let me know who you’re rooting for!

Angry Bird Party Ideas

ab_logo2.jpg
For her 10th birthday, Bella wanted to have an Angry Bird party. She was eager to make her own invites and draw some posters for the party. I went online and found a lot of cute ideas. I wanted to share what we did for those who are planning an Angry Bird party of their own.

INVITATIONS

invite_1b.JPG

invite_2.JPG

Bella made her own invites.
PARTY WEAR

tee.JPG

Bella designed her own t-shirt to wear to the party using a blank white tee and fabric markers like these. (This would also make a great party craft.)
DECORATIONS

balloons.jpg

We saw these great angry bird balloons at Tip Junkie.com. She has a free template you can print and cut out to make your own balloons, as we did here.

A close up of the welcome sign.

door.JPG

Bella made a poster for the door of her room.

4.JPG

We kept the table simple, using bird colors for the placements. Since Bella loves candy corn I sprinkled some around the table like bird seed.

tag.JPG

I made name cards for each guest. (After printing the name, fold the paper in three sections to make it stand up.) I used the Angry Bird font which is the “Feast on Flesh” font. I downloaded it from here. (I got the Angry Bird Birthday Party picture from The Party Animal-blog.org. There are also tons of great party ideas!)

bags.JPG

At the end of the party we gave out party favors in Angry Bird bags. We used the same template as the Angry Bird balloons. They came out really cute so they were great dรฉcor as well.
GAMES

Get Those Pigs Game

game.JPG

We covered a few shoe boxes in brown paper bags for the main structure. Then we added some foam blocks and green pigs for a fun game of toss. We originally wanted to make sling shots to launch Angry Bird stuffed toys but it never happened. We figured throwing an Angry Bird would work just as well. The only downfall is you have to quickly rebuild each tower after it’s knocked down so keep some distance between the kids and the tower so they have to try a few times before they get it.
Egg Hunt

hunt.JPG

We originally planned some kind of treasure hunt but changed it to an egg hunt. It is the same concept as an Easter egg hunt and we used plastic Easter eggs. However, the object of the game is to find and gather the Angry Bird eggs before the green pigs get them. We had baskets filled with green “grass” to be filled with found eggs. Brian hid the eggs out in the backyard and the kids had a blast running around looking for them.

Dance or Game Music

The kids got a kick out of the techno Angry Bird music we had playing during the games. You can download it from Itunes.
Card Game

card_game.jpg

card_game_2.jpg

For a quiet game, we found this Angry Bird card game at Amazon. The little boys were too young to sit and play with it but the girls had fun.
Play Do

playdo_1.JPG

We are big Play Do fans in this house so we thought making play do angry birds would be fun. Here are two of Bella’s creations. Since we didn’t have black Play Do we used a permanent black marker for the eyes and brows.

playdo_2.JPG

The girls also used the Play Do to decorate their angry bird toys as DJ’s. LOL!
DESSERT – CUPCAKES

cupcakes.jpg

I saw these cute cupcakes at The Crafting Chicks.com and thought they would be perfect. They looked fairly easy and fun to make. However, instead of making them myself I thought I’d have the kids make their own. That way we had a craft-game and dessert covered at once – killing two pigs with one angry bird. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Decorating the cupcakes.

cupcake_2.JPG

Bella’s creations.

cupcake_3.JPG

Making a wish and blowing out the candle on her cupcake.

Well, I hope that helps you plan out your own party! Have fun!!

Couple married 72 years dies one hour apart, holding hands | LifeSiteNews.com

This is getting posted all over but it is so beautiful it is worth posting again. It brought tears to my eyes. With so many marriages falling apart, it is a beautiful reminder of two hearts living as one.

Couple Married 72 Years Dies One Hour Apart, Holding Hands

October 20, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Does true love exist? According to the children of one elderly couple that died this past week, it does, and their parents had it.
Gordon Yeager, 94, and his wife Norma, 90, were married for 72 years, reports ABC News. But their life together was destined to come to an abrupt end on Wednesday after they were involved in a car accident together.
The couple was brought to a local hospital with broken bones and other injuries. ABC reports that after it became obvious that the couple were not going to recover, they were placed together in a bed, where they lay holding hands.
Even then, says their son, Dennis Yeager, the couple’s concern was only for each other.
“She was saying her chest hurt and what’s wrong with Dad? Even laying there like that, she was worried about Dad,” he said. “And his back was hurting and he was asking about Mom.”
Gordon died at 3:38. But people in the room at the time say they were confused when Gordon stopped breathing, but his heart monitor continued to pick up a heartbeat. That was when they realized that the monitor was detecting Norma’s heartbeat, through their clasped hands.
“And we thought, ‘Oh my gosh, Mom’s heart is beating through him,'” Dennis Yeager said.
Norma died an hour later.
“Dad used to say that a woman is always worth waiting for,” Dennis Yeager said. “Dad waited an hour for her and held the door for her.”

I was going through some old photos and found this one of Andrew kissing JP when he was a baby. I think it is so sweet! ๐Ÿ™‚

Andrew continues as a good big brother. Here he is playing with Matthew and making him laugh.

{funny}

15c1.JPG

The other day I left Matthew on the floor in the family room to let him scoot and army crawl around. Since he just turned six months, he is slow but he has been practicing and has gotten much better over the past week. I found it funny when he crawled “for real” into the kitchen.

Although, Andrew worries about him crawling onto a hard surface so he drags him back to the middle of the room. Poor guy.

The snack thief strikes again. Last week it was a bag of baked cheetos.

This time it was a bag of candy corn. I think I need to do a better job at hiding the treats.
