Did you watch the Opening Ceremonies last night? What did you think? I enjoyed it, even if a few moments seemed a bit odd. (Giant baby, anyone?) The James Bond bit was genius and I loooved the music montage although I am still upset with NBC for bloody breaking to a commercial during some of the best songs. (Did they really cut out The Clash??) At least I got to hear New Order. It was enjoyable none the less and thankfully I was able to sleep in this morn since I didn’t get to bed until after 1AM

– 2 –

It was fun to see the cast of Downton Abbey excited for the games to begin!

– 3 –

Even more than the sport itself, I love getting to know the stories behind the athletes and picking favorites to root for. I enjoyed this little clip of Athletes to Watch from the Today Show.

– 4 –

Like many, my favorite sports to watch are gymnastics and swimming. I thought it was really cute when the swim team made a video to the song “Call Me Maybe.” (Although, I would have enjoyed it more had they not picked such an annoying song. šŸ˜‰

– 5 –

Speaking of songs, some people have been complaining that “Survival” (the official song by Muse) was too theatrical. I thought so at first but after a few listens it grows on you. Plus, when you combine it with this montage of Olympic athletes, it fits perfectly.

Okay, if that doesn’t motivate me to get off my butt and get some exercise nothing will! I’m adding it to my beach walking playlist so I can listen to it as I am climbing up those sandy dunes of death. (Or as normal, fit people call them, the small sand hill leading to the parking area.)

– 6 –

Before the Olympics started yesterday I was watching the 2012 Trials of Jordyn Wieber with Matthew. He was fascinated by her, particularly the balance beam and tumbling routine…

– 7 –

olym_4.JPG

He was mesmerized as he watched.

olym_5.JPG

He cheered enthusiastically when she was done.

olym_6.JPG

And that twinkle in his eye tells me that he will soon be reenacting the routine on the kitchen table later.

Okay, time to get off the computer and get moving. Have a wonderful weekend!!

Downton Abbey, Season 3 Spoilers & TCA Press Tour (7/21/12)

season_3.jpg

(The characters are looking a wee bit crowded!)

Have you heard the latest news, fellow Downton Abbey fans?? There has been a lot of information on various blogs about the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday and the Downton Abbey panel. I have gathered the blog posts that I found most interesting and reposted them here in case you haven’t seen them yet. Warning, there are spoilers so if you don’t want to know, scroll down to the photos below instead!

From Blog.Zap2it.com: Downton Abbey’ Season 3 Spoilers: Mary and Matthew Do Not Have Solely Smooth Sailing

“Downton Abbey” premiered a trailer for Season 3 at the panel Saturday night (July 21).
Here are some highlights (don’t keep reading if you don’t want some Season 3 spoilers):
ā€¢ “When I’m with her, I’m reminded of the virtues of the English” — Lady Violet
ā€¢ We met O’Brien’s nephew, the new footman. He’s tall and rather Lurch-like.
ā€¢ Bates feels that all efforts to get him out of prison are fruitless, but Anna says, “But one day something will occur to us and we’ll follow it up and the case against you will crumble.”
ā€¢ Downton is into some money trouble. Lord Grantham: “Are you really telling me all the money is gone?” And he must reveal to Cora that her fortune is gone as well.
ā€¢ Branson and Sybil come to visit and Branson at the dinner table is amazing. Also, Carson refuses to dress “a chauffeur.”
ā€¢ IT is not all sunshine and roses for Mary and Matthew. Mary says to him, “But if we can disagree with something as fundamental as this, shouldn’t we just back away now?” Oh noes! What could it be? She also asks him, “God, Matthew, how can you be so disappointing.”
ā€¢ Speaking of Matthew, Mr. Swire’s lawyer wants to see him. Dun dun dun.

From SFGate.com: Downton Abbey’ Sneak Peek: Matthew, Mary Quarrel

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — A “Downton Abbey” sneak peek at season three revealed that fireworks will fly between matriarchs played by Maggie Smith and newcomer Shirley MacLaine.
The aristocratic Crawley family endures a financial crisis. And, despite the engagement of Matthew and Mary at the end of last season, all is not well — gasp! — with the pair played by Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery.
PBS showed brief clips from next season to the Television Critics Association on Saturday before a panel discussion with cast members and producers of the international hit. They took a break from taping in London to meet reporters in Beverly Hills.
Their visit followed a strong showing by “Downton Abbey” in Thursday’s Emmy nominations with 16 bids, including best drama series.
In one scene shared by PBS, Hugh Bonneville’s Robert Crawley, also known as Lord Grantham, is shown confessing to his wealthy American wife Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) about an investment gone wrong.
“Has some of my fortune been lost?” she asks.
“Almost all,” he replies, tearfully.
Matthew and Mary, who traveled a rocky road to what looked like blissful marriage, are shown in an angry confrontation in which she accuses him of disloyalty to the family.
Tart dialogue involving MacLaine’s Laura and Smith’s Violet, the dowager countess, also looks to be a hallmark of season three. It begins airing in September in the U.K. and next January on PBS.
“When I’m with her, I’m reminded of the virtues of the English,” Violet says of Laura.
“But isn’t she American?” asks a puzzled Matthew.
“Exactly,” Violet replies.
Series creator Julian Fellowes said the next season will encompass about two years at the start of the 1920s. Among the plot points to be resolved: What happens to John Bates, Lord Grantham’s valet who was convicted last season of murdering his wife and barely escaped the gallows.
Bonneville made his support for his loyal servant clear. At the panel’s conclusion, the actor jumped up, turned his back to the room while opening his jacket and dress shirt, and then wheeled around to reveal the T-shirt he wore underneath: “Free Bates,” it read.
“T-shirts are available in the foyer,” Brendan Coyle, who plays Bates, chimed in dryly.
MacLaine also proved a showstopper. The actress, who has said she believes in reincarnation, was asked if she and Smith had met before.
“Well, we were lovers in another life,” she said, smiling. Then she shared Smith’s recollection of their meeting some 40 years ago backstage at the Oscars, near a catering table, after MacLaine failed to take home a trophy.
“Do you know what you did, dear?” Smith reminded her. “You tucked right into that chocolate cake and said, ‘(Expletive), I don’t care if I’m thin ever again.'”
Also on hand for the panel were Dockery, McGovern, Joanne Froggatt and executive producers Gareth Neame and Rebecca Eaton. Stevens was among the cast members kept in London by filming, which continues through August.

From HitFlix.com: Press Tour 2012 Live-Blog: PBS’ ‘Downton Abbey’

I’ve saved the best for last. HitFlix.com has a live blog from the panel. It is too long to repost here so I’ll just give you a snippet and you can read the whole post here: Press Tour 2012 Live-Blog: PBS’ ‘Downton Abbey’

“Downton Abbey” was already a moderate-sized phenomenon last July when we got our Season 2-previewing Television Critics Association press tour panel last summer. That was a big deal, but it’s nothing compared to the build-up for Saturday’s (July 21) TCA panel, which is the centerpiece of PBS’ weekend, with a panel, an associated buffet dinner and a subsequent reception.
I already had a 10-minute sit-down with Brendan “Mr. Bates!” Coyle earlier this afternoon and I’ll post that soon. But here’s the live-blog from the panel, which features creator Julian Fellowes, as well as many of the show’s stars.
7:10 p.m. Dinner complete. This room has rarely been more packed. People are cuckoo for “Downton Abbey.”

7:11 p.m.
TRAILER! Maggie Smith says something catty. Shirley MacLaine arrives. There’s a new tall serving man. The Plain Sister is flirting. Mr. Bates is in jail and Anna is visiting. Uh-oh! Money’s gone! Could the servants be in jeopardy? Hot Sister is back to visit and her hubby is being all political. The ladies play cards! Carson’s offended to be serving Hot Sister’s Common Hubby. Mary and Matthew are bickering. People are crying. More talk about missing money. Uh-oh. The Crawleys are not in good shape. And Hugh Bonneville’s earning his Emmy nomination for next year. There’s a wedding coming up. Will this be the End of an Era at Downton Abbey? Perchance! Dirty talk with Matthew and Mary. Shirley MacLaine again! Hugging Maggie Smith and being catty!
7:17 p.m. On the panel, we have Julian Fellowes, Michelle Dockery, Gareth Neame, Shirley MacLaine, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt and Brendan Coyle.
7:19 p.m. Our first question was about last season’s darkness, with the war. Will this season be brighter and more cheerful? “We like a few laughs. This season, in a way, is about the recover from the war,” Fellowes says. The theme is about whether or not the world is changed forever. He promises laughs and tears.

7:21 p.m.
UGH. Questioner asks if the actors are more happy because Emmy recognition comes from Americans? Bonneville tips his hat to Jon Hamm and Damian Lewis by name and says he was “gobsmacked.” “Overwhelmed. It’s wonderful that the show has been recognized in so many categories,” Dockery says. Dockery is especially happy that their composer, overlooked last year, was nominated. Coyle told me this story earlier, but Froggatt and Coyle were shooting a scene and took a normal pause, found out they were nominated and then in the second half of the scene, they had a post-nominated glow. “It’ll be interesting to see if people spot that scenes,” Froggatt says.
7:24 p.m. “There’s a liberation in it being period, because you can go into areas that a period novel would not have done,” Fellowes says. “The discipline is to look at those subjects, but within the context of the period,” he emphasizes. The goal is to avoid having characters who seem like they’ve been parachuted in from 2012. “With ‘Downton’ the fun is that it looks like a classic period drama… but the energy is much more modern. I think that has worked for us,” Fellowes says.

Downton Abbey Season 3 Update (7/17/12)

I was checking the blog stats and noticed that this month the most hits I received were from people searching for Downton Abbey Season 3 news. (Second was people searching for a St. Anne and St. Joachim novena, which starts tomorrow.) So I thought I’d post a few more photos I’ve seen since my last Downton post on May 1.
Photos

We all know that Shirley MacLaine will be playing the role of Cora’s mother from the U.S., Martha Levinson. There should be plenty of sparks between her and the Dowager Countess.

pre_luc.jpg

Martha Levinson’s lady’s maid is Miss Reid, played by Lucille Sharp.

Cara Theobald is playing a kitchen maid named Ivy.

Ed Speleers plays a footman named Jimmy.

Matt Miline plays a footman named Alfred.

A Snippet of News
In a June 14, 2012 article posted on LA Times.com, it reads in part:

[Julian] Fellowes, battling a nasty bout with pneumonia, was recently putting the finishing touches on Season 3’s last episode. (In a shift, Season 2 will compete at the Emmys in the drama series category.) He says the coming season will find the show’s characters adjusting to life following the Great War, a period of “extraordinary social change” that will dramatically affect everyone at Downton. Oh, and Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast, playing Countess Cora’s visiting mother. Might we expect a throw-down or two between her and Smith’s Dowager Countess?
“Oh, I promise you there will be fireworks,” [Elizabeth] McGovern says. “Beyond that I say nothing.” (Read the complete post here.)

He is putting the “finishing touches on the last episode of Season 3. Yay! Although, we still have quite some time to wait….five months for those of us in the U.S.
Oh, well. In the meantime you can…

7 Quick Takes (7/13/12): Illness, Books, Family Beds & NFP

I’m Feeling Dauncy – I wasn’t sure if I was going to do QT today since I am a little under the weather. On Wednesday I was up all night with what I thought was food poisoning, even though no one else in the family was really sick and we all basically ate the same thing. Brian said there is a flu bug that is going around and maybe I caught it. I don’t know. I went for my walk this morning and I barely made 1.3 miles. I am still a bit queasy, have a head ache and ache a little. Not really sick but not my normal self either. I double checked my NFP chart…just in case but it is very unlikely. So maybe I do have a bug. Hopefully it is short lived.

Movie Date… without a date – Brian said I should get out of the house this weekend and just relax and go to the movies or something. (He knows how I love going to the movies.) I used to be phobic about going to places like the movies alone. I always wanted someone with me but ever since I was dying to see the Hunger Games last March, I went to the movies solo for the first time. I kinda loved it. I checked the movies playing at our local theater and all the movies I wanted to see aren’t playing anymore. How is that possible? They barely came out a few weeks ago. Well, I think it came down to either Magic Mike – not gonna happen – or Spiderman. So it may be me and Spidey this weekend.

Summer Reading – Last year I started reading the book Rachel’s Contrition and although I was enjoying it, I switched over to a Kindle and started reading my books on there. The book was not available as an e-book so it was forgotten on my bookshelf. I found it recently and decided to old-school it and read it in the evenings with a book light. I really enjoyed the story. It is sad but there is a lot of hope and I loved the way St. Therese was helping Rachel to heal and change her way of thinking. I’d find myself during the day thinking, “Remember what St. Therese was saying in that book? You should try having the same attitude, Bobbi.” I have to remind myself like that. I have spiritual ADD.

kids_2_10.JPG

Circa: Feb 2010

I’m A Big Boy Now – The reason I have time to read in the evening for 10-15 minutes is because we’ve switched sleeping arrangements for the kids. Bella used to sleep in the same room with Andrew because he would get afraid to be alone at night. John-Paul and Matthew slept in our room. By the time one of our kids is over two years old, we move them out of our room. JP was at the age but we waited until summer to transition him since we anticipated crying, sleepless nights and didn’t want to deal with that on school nights. I am pleased to say that the transition has gone great. After night prayers, teeth brushing, and book reading JP and Andrew are tucked in and ready to knock off. I turn off the light but to ease them into sleep I stay in the room 10 minutes (and read with my book light.) Slowly, the time is decreasing until I kiss them goodnight and just leave.

WARNING: THIS IS A TMI – NFP TAKE SO SKIP IT IF THAT’S NOT YOUR THING. The other day Brian and I were laughing because when I talked about NFP in a previous post, I mentioned ways to get “in the mood” on green days. I now discovered a top way – transitioning out of the “family bed.” Having a sleeping baby in between you and your husband (literally) can dampen the mood. However, sleeping right next to my husband again has made any “prep time” unnecessary. I’m not saying a family bed is wrong, I am just saying the season after it is really, um, nice. I told Brian it is a good thing we have shared our bed these last twelve years or else we’d probably have 12 kids by now. Which makes me think…that queasiness I have been feeling…am I sure I’m not…no, I still don’t think I am.

A Guy’s View – Speaking of NFP, I read two NFP posts this week that I really enjoyed. The first is from Camp Patton: Natural Family Planning: A Husband’s Perspective by Michael Hahn (As in Scott Hahn’s son.) It was nice to get a guy’s perspective of NFP. The second post is from Stephanie at Littles Make the World Go Round. Check out her NFP posts where she tells the story of how she got off the pill and placed her trust and fertility into the hands of God.

holy_spirit_1.jpg

Come, Holy Spirit – And speaking of controversial church teachings like the use of artificial contraception, here is an excellent article from Jen at Conversion Diary called A Conversation with My Gay Friend. To be honest with you, I struggle a great deal with church teaching about this subject but this is one of the best down to earth explanations I have read so far. Thankfully, in our faith journey you don’t have to completely understand (or completely agree with) a church teaching but you can humbly trust in the Church’s wisdom as you try to better understand and accept with both your head and your heart.

That’s it for today. Have a wonderful weekend!!

Love Song Link-Up

Hallie at Betty Beguiles has set up a Love Song Link-Up. How fun! It was hard to narrow it down since my “amore playlist” on my ipod is pretty long but here are some of my favorites. Some may not seem like love songs but they hold meaning to why I love my man.

Love Song by The Cure
This is my ringtone for Brian. He makes me whole and I will always love him.

London Calling by The Clash
I love this because when I met Brian he was an ex-seminarian who listened to Gregorian chant. Later I found out he had a passion for the Clash. I love that (somewhat hidden) bit of rebel rock and roll in him.

Sway with Me by Michael Buble
So fun and flirtatious.

Hey Mama by Mat Kearney
I love Mat Kearney. This song reminds me of the man that made me a mama. (BTW, Andrew and JP love this song and ask to hear it all the time as they sing “Hey Mama, hey, hey Mama…” To them it is their Mama kissing them good night.)

Dream by The Cranberries
I’ve listened to the Cranberries for years but this song in particular reminds me of the movie “You’ve Got Mail” about an online romance. I went to see that movie just after receiving a package and love letter in the mail from my own online suitor.

Return to Me by Dean Martin
Being 400 miles away from one another, it was hard to be apart. Brian sent me a cassette (remember those?!) of a Dean Martin album with special emphasis on this song.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder
A week before we were married I finally moved to Carmel and after our wedding I could finally say, “Ooh, baby, here I am. Signed, sealed. delivered. I’m yours.” šŸ˜‰

The Everglow by Mae
“So be here by my side, and watch the stars…”

My Idea of Heaven by Leigh Nash

My honey gives me a taste of heaven on earth.

One and Only by Adele

After all the many years of trying to find love and feeling like giving up, God had mercy on me and gave me my one and only.

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri
I’ve technically only known Brian for a little over 13 years yet it feels like I’ve known him my whole life and more.

You Are loved by Josh Groban
This song always brings a tear to my eye. It first reminds me of God’s love and how I had to fall in love with Him first before I was ready to find the man who would love me more than any other woman in the world.
