TV Talk: Downton Abbey, Season 5, Episode 1 Recap

(Spoiler Alert! You know the drill.) Well, the time has finally arrived for the US fans to sit down and enjoy another roller coaster season of Downton Abbey. There are many still recovering from the wounds of Matthew’s demise and Anna’s rape and although we may be tempted to swear off DA, here we are again ever hopeful that our favorite characters will find happiness and bracing ourselves for the drama (and traumas) to come.

The first episode picks up in 1924 and the changing times are reflected in the women’s changing wardrobes. (The guys pretty much look the same.) If the first episode is any indication of what is to come, the theme of this season may be sex and secrets, both upstairs and downstairs.

Odd Man Out

The show opens up with Edith “can-my-life-suck-any-more” Crawley secretly watching her baby girl, who has been left in the kind care of farmer Drewe and his wife. Although, we soon see that Edith is not keeping her presence secret. Later she is sitting at the kitchen table cooing over little Marigold. (Someone likes flowery names – Rose, Daisy, Marigold…) I understand that Edith longs to spend time with her daughter but does she really think no one will get suspicious about the fact that she visits the family regularly and fawns on “their” little daughter endlessly, to the discomfort of the rest of the family? Surely, her secret will come out soon. Drewe did guess her secret from the beginning but kept it to himself. However, now his wife thinks that Edith is coming around frequently because she has a crush on her husband.ย  This smells like disaster. Regardless, Drewe has a plan for Edith to “live the truth without telling the truth.”

Meanwhile, Robert “nobody-loves-me” Crawly is bemoaning his new nickname (Donk) and the Labour Government. He also expresses his displeasure that he was not only overlooked at the school, but he was not asked to be the chairman on a war memorial being set up. Instead, the villagers chose Carson. It was a blow, although he tried to handle it with grace. Luckily for him, Carson only agreed to head the committee if Robert was named the patron.

Tom “will-I-ever-fit-in” Branson still feels like the odd man out. He is such a likable character, I wish he would find the right women to capture his restless and still healing heart. Unfortunately the closest thing he has to a love interest is the annoying school marm Miss Bunting. Last season I was not a big fan but I tried to keep an open mind.ย  I understand that she has her own opinions and is opposed to the ways of Downton and that she is supposed to spark Tom’s political zeal of old, but when she was unexpectedly invited to a dinner at the Abbey, her brash rudeness was unparallelled. She manged to offend everyone she talked to and was unable to hold her tongue, or at least soften her tone, once. The only bright point was when Carson shut her down after she do rudely insulted her host. No, I do not like this one at all.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me A Match!

Who would have thought that Isobel Crawley would be tangled up in a love triangle that has been much more fun than last season’s Ivy, Daisy, Alfred triangle. Last year we had hopes that Isobel and the Doctor would hit it off but instead Dicky “yes-my-name-is-ridiculous” Merton has been in hot pursuit of Isobel. Gal-pal and favorite Grandmama Violet didn’t seem to give it much mind until she realized that if Isobel married Lord Merton she would actually rise in rank above Violet. Violet takes matters in hand by playing her own version of match.com and tries to pair Lord Merton with Lady Shackleton. (Which made me want to go back and watch the old Sense and Sensibility). The last time we saw Lady Shackleton was during the disastrous luncheon that Spratt sabotaged in fear that Mosley would take his job. Ol’ Spratt the Brat was still spreading his charm as he hilariously displayed his wordless annoyance that he was required the indignity of treating the doctor as a human being on more than one occasion.

Speaking of our favorite odd man out, Mosley has been feeling his age, and a growing attraction to Baxter. In an attempt to recapture his youth, he dyed his hair with typical Mosley results. There were many comments about the situation but the best was from Robert who said, “Mosley, you look very Latin all of a sudden. Do you have any Latin blood?” LOL.

However, Mosley is also the hero in tonight’s episode by giving the best piece of advice to Baxter. Thomas “I’m-a-pain-in-the-arse-but-you-love-me-anyway” Barrow continued to harass Baxter into revealing any secrets she may have overheard, particularly one involving Mr. Bates and Lord Gillingham’s former steward. (Baxter knows that Bates took a journey that he’d deny taking.) Mr. Mosley rescued Baxter from Thomas’ interrogation a number of times but Thomas finally managed to trap Baxter and his threats brings her to tears. If she did not revel what she knew, then Thomas would tell her secret to Lady Cora that evening. Mosley encouraged Baxter to tell Cora her secret before Thomas did. In movies, this plot line usually has the confessor being thwarted from revealing the truth until it is too late. I feared the same would happen here, but alas, Baxter was able to speak to Cora and pour out her heart.

She revealed that Thomas is friends with her sister and years ago she was working in London as a lady’s maid for a Mrs. Benton. After six months there, she stole jewelry from her employer and tried to make it look like a burglary. She was found out but she didn’t have the jewelry anymore. As a result, Baxter spent three years in prison for the crime. Before Cora could respond to her revelation, Robert came in the room. Later, however, Cora further questioned Baxter and tried to get more details about the situation. Baxter was obviously hiding the real reason she stole the jewelry in the first place. I assume Baxter does not tell the whole story in order to protect someone or to not seem like she is rationalizing her crime. Either way, I am certain this is not the last we have heard about it. Lady Cora was shocked and disappointed but she did not dismiss Baxter right away. Instead she said she would think about it. Later that night when Thomas approached Cora, she turned the tables on him and reprimanded him for keeping the secret from her when he recommended Baxter for the job. She left him wondering what repercussions his scheming will have.

Playing with Fire

Jimmy “boy toy” Kent is back in bromance with Thomas and there was plenty of, as Carson puts it, smutty deliberations brewing downstairs. Jimmy was being pursued by his former employer Lady “I-put-the-C-in-Cougar”Anstruther (played perfectly by Carolyn Bingley of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.) Jimmy tried to put her off but Lady A would have none of that. She pushed her way into the Crawley household and made up a suspicious lie about her car not working so she could spend the night at their home. Of course, it is a ruse in order to trap Jimmy. He, of course, takes the bait and with Thomas’ help slipped into her bedroom after hours. However, Jimmy was not the only one scandalously slipping into a lady’s bedroom.

Lady Mary continues to be courted but, to the dismay of #TeamBlake, Charles was nowhere to be seen! Instead, Gillingham is at the forefront and she admitted that she does love him in her “cold and unfeeling way.” Mary is still sorting out her feelings but she has moved away from wondering if she can love again after Matthew’s death and instead is concerned about whether or not her future husband will please her in bed. (“What could be more important?” she asks. Um, I can think of a few things that could be more important, but that is another post entirely! ) It may seem an odd transition but I suppose it is a reflection of the changing morals, particularly in the roaring 20’s. Her conversation with Anna about the merits of pre-marital sex left Anna saying, “I am afraid I am entirely too old fashioned for you, m’lady.” Good girl. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This conversation laid down the groundwork for an after hours knock on Lady Mary’s bedroom door. Gillingham had his own proposition. He asked Lady Mary to go away with him for a week, a tete a tete that would result in them becoming lovers. This whole conversation seemed very odd. I could imagine it happening in a different situation with different people but it seemed out of character for Gillingham to suggest something that would put Lady’s Mary’s reputation at such risk. Times may be changing, but the consequences of such actions would still be keenly felt. However, drama must march on and I suspect that Mary will partake of the forbidden fruit. Let’s just hope they fair better than Mr. Pamuk.

Meanwhile, Edith was feeling the repercussions of her own dalliance as she mourns the presumed death of Gregson and the absence of little Marigold.ย  She threw Gregson’s book towards the fireplace and cried herself to sleep. Little did she know that the book caught fire. Luckily, Thomas was still in the hallway and was able to rescue Lady Edith from her bedroom. He tried to warn Jimmy next but Robert beat him to it and found Jimmy and Lady A in bed together.

The fire raged on but thankfully they managed to put it out (with indoor water hoses??) and rescued everyone in time. In the end, Jimmy was sacked and Thomas once again, saved his hide and comes out smelling like a rose with a very sharp thorn.

In the closing scene, Farmer Drewe who was leading the firemen, told Lady Edith he had a plan for her and Marigold. Unbeknownst to them, Mrs. Hughes was nearby and although it is unknown how much of the conversation she heard, from the look on her face, she heard enough to make her suspicious.

So what did you think?? Did you like the episode? Did it seem to jump too quickly from scene to scene at times? What predictions do you have for future episodes. (But, please,. give no real spoilers!)

Favorite Quotes

  • Violet: Thereโ€™s nothing simpler than avoiding people you donโ€™t like. Avoiding oneโ€™s friends, thatโ€™s the real test.

  • Mrs. Patmore: It would be a bit sad if she had no secrets at her age.

  • Lady Shackelton: “Of course a single peer with a good estate won’t be lonely long, if he doesn’t want to be.”
  • Violet: “You sound like Mrs. Bennett.”

  • Baxter: “I will tell you the story one day. But I am loathe to forfeit your good opinion and I know I would.”
  • Carson: “No you won’t. You don’t trust me yet but I am on your side.” (Aw, I love these two together.)

  • Violet: “Principles are like prayers. Noble, of course, but awkward at a party.”

  • Tom: “I am not a hater. I don’t hate anyone. Least of all you.”
  • Robert: “Well, that is a more cheerful note to say good night.”

  • Thomas: “Well. So Lady Mary is not so ladylike after all.”
  • Jimmy: “Me next.”

  • Mary: “Lady Edith chose to set fire to her room, but weโ€™re all fine.”

Random Thoughts

— Was Bates deliberately pumping information from Lord Gillingham about his former steward? Are they going to rehash this story?

— Are Anna and Bates trying (unsuccessfully) to have a baby?

— Will Daisy seek tutoring help from Miss “Boudicca of the North Riders” Bunting?

— I really like Farmer Drewe (even if he is keeping a secret from his wife) and how he is tying to help Lady Edith but is he as good as he seems? I’d hate for him to have an ulterior motive or to later fall for Edith since he is a married man.

Online Daybook (8/18/14): The Birthday and Too Much TV Edition

Moments of Gratitude…

Today I am especially thankful…

  • For the blessing of another year of life.
  • For Matthew loving his new school.
  • For an at-home date night with Brian.
  • For a new haircut that I desperately needed.
  • For the love and fellowship of family and friends.

Embracing the Ordinary…

I’m linking up with Gina over at Someday Saints for Embrace the Ordinary.

I was trying out a new recipe and taking a photo of the final product when Matthew climbed up on the other side of the counter and said, “Tale a picture of me, Mama!” He is my “helper” in the kitchen and loves to cook by my side. Although, the background is messy I like that I can also see Andrew and Brian playing, mostly likely getting ready to build a Lego creation. ๐Ÿ™‚

In the Kitchen…

I’m in a menu funk and feeling like I make the same things over and over again. Honestly, Brian and the kids LIKE the same things over and over. They are creatures of habit. I like tried and true but with a little variety. So I will look though my old monthly menus and my binder of new recipes to try change up this week’s menu a little. In the meantime, you’ll have to settle for this photo of lovely tasting bread that is begging for some butter and jam. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Praying…

  • For my brother-in-law Mick and his fellow soldiers who were deployed to the Middle East last week. Also, for my sister Bridgette who is enduring their first separation since getting married less than a year ago.
  • For Brian’s continued recovery from the side effects of his chemo.
  • For those who are being persecuted for their faith.
  • For a greater love and appreciation of my faith and my freedom.
  • For those who are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually.
  • For some special intentions.

On the homefront……

Things are busy but going well. Matthew started pre school last week. My baby is in school now! It’s going to be really weird once the other kids are in school next week and I have a few hours when the house will be completely quiet! I’m going to have to put on Star Wars or The Incredibles orย Cars to make it sound more normal. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Around the house…

The spring cleaning bug always hits me (months late) in autumn. In 2012, my theme was homemaking and getting some order into my messy house. I was doing well but 2013 was the year of the cross with Brian’s cancer… and that carried on into the beginning of 2014. In the meantime, my cleaning projects were put on the back burner. Well, it is time to get back to it, especially while I have the itch and motivation to clean. (Lord knows it doesn’t last very long.)

On Friday it was the first day in a loooooong time when I didn’t have to be anywhere or drive anyone to anything so I unplugged the phone and the computer and committed myself to cleaning out my laundry room. There were so many piles of dirty laundry and so many bags of random crap thrown in the corners that I could barely walk in the room. It literally took me from 9 in the morning until 5 at night but I got it done! Yay! Now it has motivated me to tackle a few more cleaning messes. I won’t have a long stretch of time like I did on Friday but as Annie reminded me, “Slow and steady wins the race.” (PS. Mom, this photo is dedicated to you, although I still haven’t replaced that hanging rack that you hate. LOL. ;-))

Pondering…

Last Monday I was feeling overwhelmed with all the world news of turmoil and my heart cried for the victims of atrocities, especially fellow Christians. I was saddened that one actor’s suicide seemed to spark nasty arguments amongst Catholics over moral theology. Meanwhile, family and friends were carrying heavy crosses and everything seemed to be in chaos. So after a good cry and turning of the computer and logging off of Facebook I thought, okay God what the heck can I do about all of this? Immediately the image of St. Terese came to mind. I needed to LIVE my mottoย  – little things done with great love. Crying and wringing my hands was not going to help.

I know prayer is powerful but I couldn’t go kneel before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament as I desired. Instead I had mouths to feed and bottoms to be wiped and bathrooms to be scrubbed. I had to offer all those little things to God as my prayer for all the needs of the world. It may seem incredibly insignificant but God knows my heart. Which is the greater sacrifice to me? Making a Holy Hour or shutting my mouth and not complaining or losing my temper when milk is spilled or pee doesn’t land in the toilet or my favorite picture frame is smashed by a reckless light saber? Um, yeah, He knows the answer to that. So right here, right now, is my mission work!

Reading…

Danielle Bean’s book Momnipotent.

Catholicmom.com’s online book club will be reading Momnipotent in September.ย  It kicks off on August 30th with an interview with Danielle Bean. I’ll be reading along. Join me. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Giver by Lois Lowry (I want to finish the book before I watch the movie.)

Listening to…

I’m kinda addicted to Echosmith right now, she said as she sang, “We are going to come together now…”

Watching…

At the Movies – August is a big movie month! I saw Guardians of the Galaxy which I loved. I was going to skip it, thinking it looked a little too weird (a talking raccoon and tree??) but I read positive reviews from Kendra and Steven so I gave it a try. It far exceeded my expectations and was a fun movie. I’m hoping to see it again with Brian.ย  The Hundred-Foot Journey, was another “foodie” movie like Chef. Chef was like eating a delicious steak taco with extra salsa while you’re listening to lively music. The Hundred-Foot Journey was more like dressing up and going out to eat at a fancy restaurant without kid menus. A different, more polished experience but still enjoyable. The acting was well done, the story line intriguing, the family-love brimming and shockingly all done with a PG rating. It really is a sweet movie. ๐Ÿ™‚

On TV – We’ve got one episode left of the last season of Veronica Mars then we’ll rent the movie.

On YouTube – Are you a Hitchcock fan? If, so check this out. I’ve seen about 3/4 of this movies but missed many of these cameos!

On the blog…

Life has been going fast and posting has been slow, so only two new posts these last three weeks!

Upcoming posts will include an update on my August goals, a review of the Fitbit and tips for getting out of a mom-slump. ๐Ÿ™‚

In the blogosphere…

This one from my sis was hard to read but needed.

These two were great reminders to me to keep my perspective on the positive!

These were helpful and/or I just enjoyed them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pinned…

I love this from the Blessed Is She pinterest page. #catholicdevotional

Plans for the Week…

Well, since it is my birthday today I am allowed to just play on the computer and decorate my planner and listen to music and not worry about crossing things off my To Do list. ๐Ÿ™‚ (It’s cold and gloomy out so I may even get a cup of cocoa. LOL) This is actually our last week of summer vacation so we’ve got a lot of school orientations and uniforms sales and maybe we’ll try a beach trip if the sun plans to come out later in the week. Next week Bella, Andrew and John-Paul start school. Bella has oral surgery scheduled to pull out a few baby teeth that won’t come out and she is a little freaked out because she has to be put under. (Please keep her in your prayers!) Lastly, my sister Bridgette is coming up for an extended trip next week. I can’t wait!!

Captured…

For those who follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen these. I’m adding them for my mom to see. ๐Ÿ™‚

I went to Costco with the kids and John-Paul and Andrew found Halloween costume that they loved – a police man and an army soldier. Matthew is not allowed to get a costume until closer to Halloween since it changes all the time. So far in the running we have Captain America, Spiderman, a Ninja Turtle, Dash from The Incredibles , a race car driver or a Jedi Knight with a green light saber. He was very specific about that. Luckily, (except for Dash) we already have all these costumes at home.

We needed to have Matthew potty trained before he went to pre school. The other kids took forever to be fully potty trained so I told Matthew that I would finally buy him the big boy bike he wanted once he was potty trained. We made a chart and put on his stickers and two weeks later he was completely trained and in his undies. I should have done this years earlier!

ย Matthew and I were walking along when I saw this fruit on the floor. I told Matthew, “Look what fell off that tree.” He said, “Wow! Meatballs!” LOL. I think we need an agricultural review.

Linking-Up with…

A Mama Collective’s Currently

Gina’s Embrace the Ordinary

AND

It’s a triple header with my last link up being with Kendra’s Answer Me This.

1. What is your favorite room in the house?

Mostly likely the kitchen since I spend so much time there. The house we are living on now was Brian’s grandma’s house. When she passed away, his aunt lived here. She has since passed and we were able to move in when Bella was four and an only child. This is what the kitchen looked like then.

We slowly have been working on it and nine years later it looks like this.

You can see the rest of the remodel photos here.

2. Do you subscribe to any magazines or other periodicals?

Can you guess which mag is mine and which is the mag of my holier spouse? ๐Ÿ™‚

I love magazines! I love the photos and the feel of holding paper in your hand, even though 95% of my reading is done with ebooks. I like the bite-sized articles that I can fit in here are there rather than trying to put down a book I can’t stop reading. I currently subscribe to Catholic Digest, Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living, Cooking Light, Food Network (although I’m letting the subscription run out on that one), Lucky and Entertainment Weekly.

3. How do you feel about the sign of peace in Mass? Enriching? Awkward? Overdone? Just right? Some combination of the above?

I am a touchy-feely hugger so I enjoy the sign of peace as long as the other person touching my hand hasn’t been sneezing all through Mass and as long as everyone STOPS once the Lamb of God starts.

4. What is your least favorite sound?

It’s a three-way tie: Nails on a chalkboard or high-pitched whining or Matthew’s current practice of screeching at the top of his lungs.

5. What was your favorite TV show (or shows) growing up?

As a little kid my favorite cartoon was Scooby Doo. My favorite family shows were Little House on the Prairie,ย  The Cosby Show and repeats of The Brady Bunch. However, the one show that is the closest to my heart is I Love Lucy. Watching a show today brings me right back to the kitchen with my mom laughing with Lucy and Ricky. I own every episode on DVD and my kids have seen them all too. When I am with my family we still quote lines to each other in our normal conversation. ๐Ÿ™‚

6. What are your favorite TV shows now?

I always have way more shows in my DVR than I have time to watch but it carries over to the summer months when there is nothing on and I can catch up on the past fall shows I never finished. My current faves are Sherlock, almost all the Masterpiece Mystery shows,ย  Downton Abbey, The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow, The Blacklist, The Middle, The Big Bang Theory, Parenthood, Grimm, and for a bit of guilty pleasure –Pretty Little Liars. The show I am most looking forward to watching in fall is Gotham. I’ll also mention that I used to be a fan of Once Upon A Time but the Peter Pan storyline was draaaaaaaging on and I gave up and deleted the shows from my DVR. Well, with the summer slump I started watching again and got back into it so I have a few more episodes to go and I’ll be ready for the new season.

Wow, that was a long post. Thanks for reading through it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Top Ten Theme Songs of My Life

Hey guys. I feel like I haven’t posted in ages. We had a great time in Lake Tahoe and I was not online much and that spoiled me. We’ve been home for a couple days but I still haven’t touched my computer . However, I thought it was time to get back into it, at least a little bit. Last night I went to go see the move Begin Again and it got me thinking about music. Then I saw thatย  Jen asked us to share the theme songs of our life. Anyone that knows me well, knows that I love music and I always have mental soundtracks that accompany the memories of my life. So here are my Top 10 theme songs that hold meaning to my life.

The Childhood Years

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

When we were growing up, my parents liked to listen to the oldies station that played a lot of motown. I remember my mom telling me this was one of her favorite songs. I like this one because it seems to represent my parents early years of marriage. Barely 20 years old (or so) they had rough childhoods and their own demons to fight. Being the oldest, I best remember the early years and the troubles they faced. God was not an active part of their lives then and you could see the effect. They struggled. But as the song says…

Listen, baby
Ain’t no mountain high
Ain’t no valley low
Ain’t no river wide enough, baby

If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Just call my name
I’ll be there in a hurry
You don’t have to worry

God was always there beckoning them, calling them, ready to fly to their sides if they called out to Him. Thankfully, they did. God’s grace healed their relationship, healed the issues they were facing and breathed new life into our family. God became the center and we slowly learned to live for Him. As the years passed and more babies came (eventually 9 kids) mom and dad’s love grew even stronger. There was no valley low enough to keep them apart from one another. After 45 years of marriage, they are going as strong as ever… still loving and still feisty. They are a living example of how God’s grace can completely transform a life.

The Teen Years (TIED)

Love Songย  by The Cure

Suedehead by Morrissey

You get two songs for the price of one because I had a ridiculously difficult time narrowing it down to one song since there were numerous tracks dominating my headphones. Runner ups were The Smith’s Ask, New Order’s True Faith, Depeche Mode’s Policy of Truth and Psychedelic Furs’ Heartbreak Beat. Back then these songs were the soundtrack of driving around So Cal. Now they are the playlist I use to scrub toilets, do laundry and wash countless dishes. My how times have changed. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Young Adult – The Dark Years

Head Like A Hole by Nine Inch Nails

The song itself is not really bad but the memories that come with it are not good. They conjure up the years I fell away from God and into sin.

Young Adult – The Reversion Years

Confession by John Michael Talbot

I think the lyrics say it all. (I started crying again just posting it here.)

I see a struggle now within
Alive in my soul
As Iโ€™m dying to sin
I do the things that I hate
So I hate what I do
Who will deliver me?
But thanks be to God through Jesus Christ
For there is no condemnation at all

This is the message we have heard
We have seen with our eyes
We have touched with our hands
The Word of life appeared
The Word became flesh
The Word dwelt among us
The Word of life
The God of light
And in Him there is no darkness at all
If we claim to have fellowship with Him
Yet we walk in the dark
We live in a lie
If we claim to be without sin
We deceive ourselves
The Word is not within us
If we confess our sins and cry out to God
He will forgive and purify our human hearts
For those who are in Jesus Christ
He has given us of the Spirit of God

I see a struggle now within
Alive in my soul
As Iโ€™m dying to sin

Young Adult – The Discernment Years

Dreams by the Cranberries

As the song says…

Oh, my life is changing everyday,
In every possible way.
And oh, my dreams, it’s never quite as it seems,
Never quite as it seems.

My 20’s held the most changes in my life. After my reversion and coming back to God, He completely changed my heart. I then contemplated a religious vocation. It was very difficult for me because my dream was to always be a mom one day and to give that up was almost more than I could bear. However, I knew that I owed everything to God and if this is what he wanted of me, than I would follow. Like Abraham, God only wanted my willingness to sacrifice my Isaac. In the end, I realized I was called to the vocation of marriage. This song represents those years of waiting and yearning for The One. I never thought my dreams could be so completely fulfilled until I met Brian. He was everything I dreamed of and then some.

The Dating/Long Distance Relationship Year

Return to Me by Dean Martin

ย Brian and I met online in November of 1998. We met in person in April of 1999. We were engaged a few months later. Up until one week before the wedding at the end of that year, we were separated by 400 miles. It was very difficult, to say the least. Brian sent me a cassette (remember those?!) of a Dean Martin album with special emphasis on this song. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Honeymoon Years

What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

I was finally married to the man of my dreams. Need I say more?

The Motherhood Years

Hey Mama by Mat Kearney

Motherhood did not come easily for me. After we were married it took us a year to conceive Bella. The next six years brought us secondary infertility and two babies lost in miscarriage. Thankfully, we found out about The Creighton Model of NFP along with a great NFP teacher and doctor who helped us figure out the problem and a solution. The result? Three bouncing bambinos within the next six year span. God is good.

This song fills me with nothing but good memories because we listen to it all the time as we are driving in the car or when I am cooking dinner and they are “breakdancing” on the kitchen floor as they yell, “Hey mama! Look at me.” Happy sigh. “I’m looking, sweetie. I’m looking.”

The Cancer Years

Hold You Up – Shane Harper

I’ve posted this song on the blog before but it still means a lot to me. Here is a portion of the lyrics:

When it’s coming apart, you had it all.
It wasn’t enough. No, it’s not enough.
They tell you it’s not worth the price, so just let it go.
But you know you can’t. You know you won’t.

It’s not easy, no.
Finding the words to say.
When you’re feeling lost, you’ll find your way.

The world is so broken and sometimes it leaves you cold.
At nighttimes you can’t feel the fire to guide you home.
The demons will harm you and try to steal what you know.
But the angels, they brought you, and they’re gonna hold you up.
They’re gonna hold you up.

They see the fear in your eyes, heart sinks like a stone.
‘Cause when you’re afraid, it weighs on your soul.

They’re gonna hold you up.
They’re gonna hold you up…

* * *

I love the lyric “The demons will harm you and try to steal what you know. But the angels, they brought you, and they’re gonna hold you up.”

When I am feeling overwhelmed and am stressing out I am tempted to lose it, I can give into my weakness and the negativity in my head and allow the demons to steal what I know – that God is with me. That he is strongest when I am weakest and He can accomplish amazing things. If I am docile in the hands of God and surrender to him in the little things, as well as the big things, He will hold me up and carry me through. That is especially timely these days. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The current soundtrack of my life is the entire Bad Blood album by Bastille. I’m addicted to every song but the one that touches me the most right now is “Pompeii.” When we found out that Brian’s cancer came back in January, I felt just like this…

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Our life has been turned upside down with his cancer, but there are moments when we are lost in our love and we forget what we are battling. It has brought us closer together and with only one chemo cycle left, I am optimistic about our future.

7 Quick Takes (6/13/14) & {p,h,f,r} vol. 88 & Theme Thursday – Old Fashioned: Beach Bonfires and BBC/Masterpiece Love

Well, today the kids have Mass and a closing ceremony at school and then they are officially done for the school year. I am already in vacation mode as I sit here in my pajamas typing on the computer, waiting for the what seems like the 100th load of laundry to finish. It has been a jam packed week with birthdays, end of school year parties, preschool graduations and other end of the year festivities. I feel like I’ve hardly been home all week, except to prep food and take it to a party.ย  As such, the blog has also been neglected but I just figure you guys are as busy as I am at this time of year so I don’t sweat it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But just to keep you in the loop as to why I haven’t blogged, here’s what we’ve been doing this week.

I am linking up with Kathryn for Jen’s for 7 Quick Takes, Cari for (gasp!) Theme Thursday: Old Fashioned (see Take #3) and the lovely ladies at Like Mother, Like Daughter for {pretty, happy, funny, real}.

On Sunday, Andrew celebrated his 7th birthday. He wanted an ocean party complete with a trip to his favorite spot – the Monterey Aquarium. After days of grey fog the sun finally came out to make a beautiful day.

The view from one of the observation decks.

The birthday boy.

I had a ton of photos I took at the Aquarium but to spare you the photo dump I added my faves to this collage.

{happy} / Theme Thursday: Old Fashioned

There were three end of the year school parties and our favorite was the old fashioned beach bonfire.

ย Although it was roughly 59 degrees and the water was COLD, Bella, Matthew and Andrew couldn’t resist playing in the waves.ย  (A beanie and bare feet – Cali attire.)

Meanwhile, John Paul takes after his daddy. Neither of them like to take off their shoes and most definitely don’t want to feel the sand between their toes. (That baffles me!) At one point they both were just staring off into the sunset contemplating. It was so sweet.

I was just happy to stand there and let the waves wash over my feet. (And even more happy that I didn’t drop my camera or anything.) ๐Ÿ˜‰

The sun is setting behind the fog.

We ended the day with old fashioned smores. Can you spot the stick with the flaming marshmallow??

{funny}

I think it’s funny that we are supposed to celebrate pre-school graduations. I don’t really get it…

…but I play along anyway. Besides, John-Paul is so cute in his little cap. So congrats to my little grad.

{real}

All these outings are a lot of fun but with all the potlucks we joined, out kitchen looked like this pretty much all week. (And this is only a small portion of the mess.) Don’t even get me started on the laundry. Yesterday I was trying to convince a size 7 boy that he could borrow a clean pair of underwear from his size 4 brother. No bueno. Yeah, so today I don’t plan on leaving the house until all the laundry and dishes are done. (Check back with me in a few days.)

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy early Father’s Day to all you papas out there, especially my own sweet Daddy, my father-in-law Opa and finally my hubby – father to my children, my sweetheart and my super hero Brian. We’ll be celebrating the day with fresh homemade ice cream with our new Cuisinart ice cream maker as soon as Amazon Prime delivers it today. (I heart Amazon!!)

Later I’ll post how it worked out for us.

Masterpiece Mystery

source

After we put the kids to bed on Father’s Day, Brian and I will meet on the couch to enjoy the return of Masterpiece Mystery, which I love even more than the beginning of Downton Abbey season. First on the roster is Dave Tennant with The Escape Artist.

The rest of the season includes:

  • ENDEAVOUR: Season 2 (June 29-July 20, 2014) – Smart and well done.
  • HERCULE POIROT: Season 12ย  ( July 27 to August 3, 2014) – HP is an oldie but a goodie.
  • BREATHLESS (August 24 to September 7, 2014) – Not sure about this one. Looks like a Mad Men type show, which I wouldn’t mind if the characters can manage to keep their pants on.
  • MISS MARPLE (September 21 and 28, 2014) – I still miss the old Miss Marple character but enjoy the show none the less.
  • INSPECTOR LEWIS: Season 7 (October 5-19, 2014) – I’m glad the boys are back! (And not just because I have a little crush on Hathaway, who reminds me of Brian.)
  • DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY (October 26-November 2, 2014) – I’ve got this book in my reading queue so I can read it before I watch the show. ๐Ÿ™‚

Get more details at PBS: Masterpiece Mystery.ย  (Now I’m just waiting for more Sherlock, Broadchurch, Whitechapel and Wallander.) ๐Ÿ˜‰

That’s it for now. Have a great weekend!

Jedi and Super Heroes Agree – #SOTG Is a Powerful Weapon to Bring Light & Truth to a Weary World

I’ve been known to procrastinate and cut things close but this is really pushing it. It is the 11th hour and I am just squeaking in for the deadline for Jen’s photo contests with her new book Something Other than God. I’m not sure if these would qualify as selfies since I’m not in them but maybe weirdest place..in the hands of jedi and super heroes? Either way it was fun and Matthew loved going through our box of costumes… again. These wardrobe changes are pretty much an everyday occurrence.

It was cute that I didn’t tell him to look through the book, he just opened it up and checked it out. ๐Ÿ™‚
