7 Quick Takes (10/16/15): Gratitude, #write31days & Theme Thursday

RevolutionofLove.com - (logo_7_quick_takes_c)

The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 16 of my 31 Days of Gratitude 2015.

I’m linking up with Kelly for 7 Quick Takes and Micaela for Theme Thursday. (Scroll to #5)

~ 1 ~

Happy Friday, everyone! I am feeling a little better today (I have a stomach bug), the kids are off of school today and they are playing relatively quietly with their Legos so I have about 20 minutes uninterrupted time until I have to break up a fight or tell them to stop jumping off he bunk beds. So let’s get this done! (Warning, I will be listening to copious amounts of Silversun Pickups while writing.)

~ 2 ~

It is day 16 of #wrtie31days and my theme of 31 Days of Gratitude. I have actually posted every day so far and that in itself is an accomplishment for me. Usually I am all gung-ho about something and then a few days into it the novelty wears off and I’m ready to leave and jump into a new shinier project. Yeah, it’s not a pretty trait but it is something I am constantly working on. Thankfully God has been giving me the grace to learn how to persevere and follow through. It is not easy and I have a long way to go but for God’s grace and the baby steps and progress I’ve made, I am truly thankful!

~ 3 ~

I finally got my #write31days tee in the mail yesterday. Cristina over at HandmaidEmbroidery.com challenged us to take a selfie with our tee so here it is. πŸ˜‰

contestSpeaking of the #write31days challenge, each week they have a giveaway for the bloggers who are participating. From now until October 30th, they are hosting a giveaway for all the READERS of 31 Days. That means you! You could win a $500 Dayspring Shopping Spree. Enter here and good luck!

Theme-Thursday-4-1024x683I was catching up on some blogs yesterday and I saw that Micaela has taken over hosting duties of the Theme Thursday photo challenge. I will miss Cari’s hosting but I can’t think of a better person to carry on. Micaela is one of those people that amazes me with her talents. πŸ˜‰ (I also got to meet here at the CWBNCA in spring. Heck, when is our next conference?? I am missing you guys!)

This week’s theme is sun flares. The sun is not out now so I’ll post this one I took the other day.

RevoluitonofLove.com - (31_days15_day16)

I don’t really like the way it came out (too dark) but it has the sun flares.

~ 6 ~

And speaking of awesome blog link up hosts, Kelly’s Link-toberfest continues! This week’s question is “Who is your favorite blogger that you discovered through Quick Takes?”

best_bibTo be honest with you, it’s hard for me to remember who I originally met through 7 Quick Takes but I do know that a favorite blogger I started reading regularly because of 7QT is the awesome Karianna Frey! Back then she blogged at Caffeinated Catholic Mama. She has since started a new blog Best Bib and Tucker.

revolution of love blog - cwbn_amigas_1Karianna, Amber and Me πŸ™‚

I love Karianna’s energy and style but when I met her in real life in spring at the CWBNCA Conference 2015 then that sealed the deal! I love reading her blog and watching her Periscopes. πŸ™‚

Okay, my time is up and there were only two minor brawls to break up. πŸ˜‰ Have a great Friday! I’ll be back tomorrow with a recap of this weeks #LoveYourLettering challenge. (Um, I better catch up on my assignments first!)

7 Quick Takes (10/12/15): The Monday Edition – Gratitude & Reminiscing

seven-quick-takes-friday-2

The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 12 of my 31 Days of Gratitude 2015.

~ 1 ~

Today started out as one of those days where it seems like everything was going wrong – we woke to an ant invasion, my blog had been hacked and I couldn’t get my WP back up to work properly. As I was trying to take a quick 2 minute shower to deal with the growing list of problems, I tried to look on the bright side of things. I imagined worse things that could be happening and suddenly the hill didn’t seem so big and I could climb it. I prayed for God’s grace and a few hours (and a few cuss words later) the ants were killed, the blog restored and the back up achieved. Whew. Plus, the kids were off school today so I didn’t have my usual daily grind of taxi driving all over the place. I count that as something to be thankful for!

~ 2 ~

I completely forgot about Kelly’s big Link-toberfest on her blog until this morning. I already missed last week’s question so I’ll just double up and catch up today. Last week Kelly asked, “When did you post your first Quick Takes?” That was on 7/11/09.

RevolutionofLove.com (ba_kids_7_27_09)I was 7 months pregnant with John-Paul (Matthew was still a couple of years away) and I so excited about it! Ha, look at that beach ball belly!

~ 3 ~

Here is a summary of what I talked about in my very first Quick Takes.

  1. Β I talked about having no energy to even get out of my chair so I was going to “give the quick take Friday thing a try” and that I just received Pampered Chef items wanted to make the mini-quiches.
  2. I was super excited that my mom was flying up from Southern California to help me with some pre-baby things but I was just happy to have her around and hear her laughter.
  3. I was planning a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
  4. I finished an Agatha Christy novel and was starting Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza.
  5. I said I was leery to watch remakes of the old classics. For example, the new version of The Women was so bad I couldn’t finish it. Instead, I love the 1939 version with Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford. It’s interesting to see how certain elements of human behavior remains the same no matter what the era.
  6. I was listening to Matt Kearney’s City of Black and White. I said I loved the “disc.” That must have been before simply downloading to your playlist.)Β  πŸ˜‰
  7. Lastly, I was singing the praises of Brian. I said,”He works so hard for us and even when he is tired he’ll help me out with the kids or cleaning the shower or scrubbing toilets because it is hard for me to bend over with my growing belly and he doesn’t want me smelling cleaner fumes. Sometimes I forget that it’s all the little things he does that says he loves me.” Some things never change. He still rocks and I am still totally blessed!

~ 4 ~

This week’s question was how many Quick Takes have we posted? This will be #108. πŸ™‚

~ 5 ~

I was just talking about goals last week when I shared my October Goals and Kelly mentioned that she is starting a Facebook group for goal keeping encouragement. It’s described as “A fun group of gals helping each other reach their goals through encouragement and the occasional kneecap breaking.” LOL. Sign me up. πŸ˜‰

~ 6 ~

Okay, my time is up and I have to get dinner on the table. A big thanks to Kelly for hosting and keeping the 7QT fun alive and well, even for those who don’t get around to it until Monday. πŸ˜‰

~ 7 ~

(Yeah, I know this is a cheat take by signing off but I think you’ll live.)

Online Daybook & 7 Quick Takes (8/28/15): School, Parties and Prayer

Revolution of Love - logo_daybook_4

Happy Friday!Β  I am linking up with Kelly for 7 Quick Takes.

~ 1 ~

od_logo_quiet2

Grateful for…

  • The kids being happy in their first week back at school.
  • Having four hours to myself each morning!
  • Getting to a better morning prayer routine.
  • A husband that works so hard for our family.
  • Kind notes from friends.
  • The necessities of life.

Praying for..

  • The grace to not waste time.
  • Those carrying heavy crosses.
  • Those who have died unexpectedly and for their families left behind.
  • An end to the fires burning in CA and WA.
  • An end to the drought.
  • All pregnant moms, those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.
  • Some special intentions.

Pondering…

revolution of love - cwa_planner_2

This week I have been thinking about the use of my time and not wasting it. Now that the kids are back to school I have my mornings free. I have a HUGE list of To Do’s and things I need to work on but my mind is constantly going, “Squirrel!” and I jump into too many things at once and I don’t actually get much accomplished. I hate that! That is why I am such a list maker and planner user. I have been trying to order my day and get the “must do’s” done first. Even if the rest of the day gets crazy, if I at least accomplished a few of the primary things, I don’t need to sweat it.

I am working on my planner posts next week. I have my new 2015-2016 Erin Condren planner and a small traveler’s notebook. I am also updating my Household Binder and Financial binder so lots of planner posts coming up!

Around the House…

I’m dividing up the house into sections to work on. This week I am working on the entry way. We finally found a system that we like to corral all the back packs, shoes and various items that accumulate in the entryway. I’ll be sharing about it in future posts. πŸ™‚

Family Chit Chat…

This happened –

revolution of love - kids_8-24-15The first day of school. It’s the first (and last) year we will have all the kids together in one school! We’ve got Bella (8th), Andrew (2nd), John-Paul (K) and Matthew (Pre-K).

revolution of love - mvx_8-24-15Matthew’s first day of school in his cute little uniform. After taking this photo he said, “Okay, you can leave now, mom.” Lol. I’m glad he feels so comfortable there! (After seeing his siblings in that class he was dying for it to be his turn.)

revolution of love - jp_8-24-15The first day was also John-Paul’s birthday! He brought Star Wars graham crackers to share with his friends.

Revolution of Love - star_wars_bday_3BI had fun making the birthday sign with the help of Picmonkey. πŸ˜‰

Watching…

(At the Movies)

I haven’t been to the movies much these last couple weeks, although I did catch this one.

movie_papaertownsPaper Towns reminded me of the John Hughes movies I used to watch when I was a kid. There are many teen elements but something a little deeper too. The story is about Quentin and his childhood friend Margo. They slowly drift apart and into different social crowds in high school but he never stops having a crush on her. On night, after she breaks up with her boyfriend, she turns to Q to help her seek revenge on those who wronged her. They bond and the following day she disappears. Q follows the clues she left to find out where she went.Q’s coming of age story is better than other teen movies I’ve seen and I like that (slight spoiler alert) that there wasn’t the cliched “happy” ending. That actually made the movie for me.Β  I’d rate this 3 1/2 stars out of 5, Parent note: The movie is rated PG-13. It contains language, crude remarks/ behavior, implied teen sex (nothing shown), partial nudity (a guy’s behind) and a secular worldview.

Listening to …

The movie may not be your cup of tea but if you listen to the alternative music station then you’ll probably enjoy the Paper Town Soundtrack. I know I am loving it. The song “My Type” by Saint Motel is on it and although it’s an older song, it has been one of my favorite tracks of the summer. I dare you to listen to it and not want to dance! I’ll be listening to it in the car as I go on a lunch date with Brian this weekend! Well, only if i have on my earphone since he doesn’t like my music. He is either listening to chant or The Clash. My sweet paradoxical man is just my type. πŸ˜‰

Β

Reading…

These are on my nightstand now.

I have not been reading lately since by the evening I am so exhausted I fall asleep after a few sentences. Now that I have more free time to work in the morn, I hope to remedy that because I downloaded a bunch of books on my Kindle thanks to the Kindle deals I found over at ModernMrsDarcy.com. There are some great titles listed!

7 Quick Takes (8/21/15): Brunch, Birthday & Blessings

seven-quick-takes-friday-2

I was going to do an Online Daybook but I don’t have enough time. Instead I’m linking up with Kelly and posting a quickie 7 Quick Takes that will really only be of interest to my family (or close friends) since it’s mostly family news. πŸ˜‰

~ 1 ~

This has been our last week of summer vacation and I feel like we packed more fun in this week than we did over the whole summer! (Well,Β  minus out trip to Lake Tahoe in June.) On Saturday my friend Celia (whom I met through the Blessed Is She regional Facebook group) and I hosted a Blessed is She Brunch in Monterey. We got together with old friends as well as new friends who we only knew through the Facebook groups.

revolution of love - qt_brunch_1WWe started off the day with Mass at San Carlos Cathedral to celebrate the feast of the Assumption. I love my lively family but it was a treat to sit and worship Our Lord at Mass without having to tell someone to stop making rude noises or quit poking their brother during Mass. I needed that alone time.

food1

Afterwards, we headed over to Celia’s house. Everyone brought in a dish for the potluck and we enjoyed the deliciousness, we talked and shared stories.

Revolution of Love - Blessed Brunch (brunch_2)We shared how BIS has touched our hearts and helped in our spiritual journey. We talked about our families, our kids, our interests and everything else under that came up. If you put a group of women together, you will never run out of things to talk about! After we closed the afternoon with prayer we said our goodbyes and planned to make this a regular occurrence. πŸ™‚

Revolution of Love - qt_bday_2015_aWa birthday bouquet

On Tuesday, I celebrated my 35th birthday (full disclosure, I have been 35 for years now.) πŸ˜‰ My favorite gift?

Β Revolution of Love - ba_sibs_2015In the family line up it’s me (#1, the oldest)), Jacinta (#6, the athlete), Isaac (#9, the baby) and Nathaniel (#4, the artist).

A visit from my sister Jacinta and my brothers Nathaniel and Isaac. I haven’t seem them since January at my brother Jake’s wedding so it was a real blessing!

Revolution of Love - qt_bday_2015_dWe spent the day touring Monterey, specifically San Carlos Beach…

Revolution of Love - The Wharf in Montereyqt_bday_2015_eand the Wharf.

Revolution of Love Blog - qt_bday_2015_3WThere were a number of sea lions out and the kids had fun watching them swim and pose for photos.

Revolution of Love - qt_bday_2015_fWAfter walking the first mile, the boys needed a little motivation to make the second mile so we stopped at this Willy Wonka like candy store. I may have consumed a dark chocolate almond clusterΒ  rationalizing that calories don’t count as long as you are moving while you are eating. πŸ˜‰

~ 3 ~

Revolution of Love Blog - qt_bday_2015_cWLater that evening my siblings told me to go out with Brian and they would babysit. I ran out the door before they could change their mind.

Revolution of Love -- qt_bday_2015_bWLuckily, Brian had won a free dinner at work so we were able to dine at Peppoli’s in Pebble Beach. Brian must have told them it was my birthday because this was on my menu. A birthday greeting! Fancy.

Now, Brian and I are more of a chips and salsa couple than a wine and cheese couple so we definitely were a little out of our element as we were escorted to the table, greeted by the chef, had napkins placed in our laps and given the wine list.

Revolution of Love - qt_bday_2015_gWe don’t usually eat beef, so when we go out I like I get a treat. This time I chose the beef tenderloin. It was SO GOOD.

~ 4 ~

At one point our conversation went something like this.

Brian: I don’t like this.

Me: “Don’t like what?”

Brian: “They are treating me like, like…”

Me: “Like you are somebody?”

Brian: “Exactly! I don’t like it.”

Me: (Laughing) (In a whisper:) “I feel like I am on Downton Abbey. Look at that waiter standing by the wall with his hands behind his back. He is keeping an eye on us so he can come to our side the moment we need him. Watch this.” (I then place down my silverware and wipe my mouth with my napkin. Like clockwork, the waiter comes over and asks if he can remove my plate.

Me: (After the waiter leaves.) “I could get used to this.” (Snapping my fingers joikingly.) “Oh, Carson. The dessert menu please.” Yeah, I can get used to this.

Brian: “Well, don’t get used to this! Its back to the real world once we walk out the door.”

Me: (Sighs) “Well, it was fun while it lasted.” πŸ˜‰

~ 5 ~

revolution of love - qt_dl_4_14kI came home and found the table decorated like this. So sweet.

The next day I wanted to take my sister and brothers to one of our favorite spots – Point Lobos Reserve.

Revolution of Love - qt_point_lobos2

We climbed our favorite trail and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery.

revolution of love - qt_bday_2015_lIt’s a tradition to take a photo of the boys on the big rock that marks the half way point of our walk.

~ 7 ~

The last few birthdays have been a little harder with Brian being sick and going through chemo so it was a treasured blessing that this year we are all well and healthy and not going though any serious drama. There are always peaks and valley so right now I am enjoying this peak in my life. πŸ™‚

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! If you are not having the best time right now and could use some extra prayer, let me know. I’d be happy to pray for you.

Saturday 7 Quick Takes (8/8/15): Periscopes, Podcasts and Pirates

seven-quick-takes-friday-2

~ 1 ~

pirates_of_carThe crazy busyness of July has made way for a less busy August schedule (until school starts on the 24th) and that has allowed me to catch up on housework as well as spend some play time with the kids. This week we’ve gotten into the habit of playing outdoors until they are ready to drop from tiredness and heat. (Heat being a relative term since 80 degrees constitutes a heat wave here.) Then they come indoors and we watch a movie. I have taken the opportunity to let them view a few of my favorites. This summer they saw for the first time Jurassic Park, The Princess Bride and the entire Star Wars saga (only Andrew watched Episode 3. Anakin’s turn to the dark side was too intense for the younger boys). Next they wanted to watch The Pirates of the Caribbean. I told them okay but it would have to be a fast-forwarded version since they couldn’t watch the scarier parts.

So while they are getting settled with their snacks and being introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow, I’ll type up a short 7 Quick Takes.

~ 2 ~

As the kids have been playing outside and building Legos or Minecraft creations, I have done some serious purging and organizing this week. I know I have been breaking blogging code by continuously promising to post some organizing results then never actually posting but the blogging code is more of a guideline so…. next week! That’s a pirate’s promise.

Revolution of Love Blog - qt_couch_frames

I will say that while cleaning out my closets I found a treasure chest of picture frames that I had purchased on sale or clearance but that I never got around to hanging up. (I can hear my mom say, “Well, that’s a shocker.”) Sigh. I know, I know but yesterday I said, “No more!” I got a hammer and nails and got to work. Yay! Now my wall looks happy, even though there’s one spot that needs a small frame to complete the look.

~ 4 ~

qt_building_bridges

As I have been busy cleaning this week, my phone has kept me entertained with a stream of podcasts and periscopes. My newest podcast love is for Building Bridges by Jenna Guizar and Cristina Trinidad. I’ve heard half their podcast list so far (#1 – 4) and next week I will catch up with the other half. There’s some great content, fun moments and a large dash of crazy.

~ 5 ~

Cultivating-the-Lovely-Show

Besides podcasts, I’ve also become a fan of Periscope, which is basically a social media app that allows you to interact with a person doing a live video. (You interact by typing in comments that they see live and you tap your phone screen to give them “hearts” if you like what you’re hearing.)

My favorite periscope show is Cultivating the Lovely by Mackenzie ofΒ  Bold Turquoise. Mackenzie’s daily challenge is for each of us to pick three things that we will do to bring loveliness into our busy (sometimes messy) lives. Mackenzie is also a Christian and I love how she encourages you to first spend time in prayer and the Word and then ask God what three things He would like you to work on. If you’re never caught the show live, you can watch her replays here.

~ 6 ~

simplified_org

My other favorite scoper is Mystie Winckler from Simplified Organizing. I am currently taking her organizing course and being able to interact with her online has been fun.

It was Mystie’s course that inspired me to clean out the closets and Mackenzie’s quest for loveliness that inspired me to pretty up our family room. πŸ˜‰

Since I’ve been busy cleaning and movie watching I’ve also needed some easy dinners. I found ample inspiration from Dwija’s post and link up Easy Slow Cooker and One Pot Meals Link-Up. Go check it out. There are some yummy options there!

Okay, I’ve got to run. The pirates need refills of popcorn and lemonade and a certain young scalawag wants me to find him a pirate costume ASAP. Savvy?

Have a blessed weekend!
