When I first heard that Blessed Is She was thinking about making a Catholic devotional for kids, I was thrilled. I just knew in my heart that it was going to be something special. Then when I was asked to be one of the many writers to work on the book, I was humbled and excited. Not only would it be something I could pass along to my own children, it was something that could touch the heart of many, many young people.
Behind the scenes there were numerous moving parts that had to come together. It finally payed off and prayers were answered when I walked to the mailbox and held the newly released book in my hands. As I thumbed though the pages, I gasped at just how colorful and beautiful the book was. Erica Tighe Campbell of Be A Heart Designs, the designer and illustrator, outdid herself! Every page contains gorgeous graphics that, amazingly, would appeal to both boys and girls.
The book is divided into 15 chapters, written by 15 different BIS devotional writers. (I worked on chapter 8, the virtue of Obedience. š) Each chapter focuses on one of the virtues as taught by St. Thomas Aquinas – faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, gratitude, generosity, obedience, courage, perseverance, patience/mercy, temperance, humility, studiousness, and honesty. Our theological editor at BIS, Susanna Spencer, studied the virtues then wrote an introduction and conclusion for each virtue that retains the richness of truth, but is presented in a manner young people can understand.
Each chapter is set up to be read over 7 days. Day 1 is a Scripture to reflect on that week and an overview of the week’s virtue. Days 2 – 7 have a short reflection/lesson and prayer on the virtue, along with words of wisdom from the saints or Scripture. Although the book was written for kids, there are lessons rich enough for an adult to benefit from too!
I am so excited that the book is now available to the public. I highly recommend it for the young people in your life. It was especially make a perfect First Communion gift!
