How I Started Setting Goals & My Mid-Year 2018 Goals

It has been awhile since I’ve posted about my goals and before I jump into sharing my mid-year goals, I thought I’d give you a little background into how I got into goal making in the first place.

Myth: I’m not a goal setting type of person.

Back in the summer of 2014, I first heard about Lara Casey and her Powersheets and making goals as a way of living your life. It all seemed foreign to me. I was a stay at home mom with four kids ages 3-12. I was just trying to make it through the day with my sanity intake and maybe a clean load of laundry. I imagined goals as something for women who were entrepreneurs, or authors writing a best seller or travelers saving for a trip to Paris. I didn’t fit into any of those kind of categories.

But as I read Lara’s thoughts about making goals, I realized that goals can be lofty things, but they don’t have to be. For a postpartum mom, her goal may simply be to get an extra hour of sleep. Then as some time passes for that mom and she exits the fog of new mommydom, she can focus on expanding to different goals. Later, when her kids are at school, her ability to explore new avenues will open different goals int her life. Her goals move and expand with her life as needed. I love that it is not a one size fits all but a tailor made process, whether you’re single, married, have babies or grown children.

I’m too busy to add goals to my list of things to do, not to mention that I suck at resolutions.

The thought of adding one more item to my to do list was overwhelming. However,ย  I came to see that it was more of a re-prioritizing the different areas of my life and focusing on making the most of the time I had to do the work God had placed before me – namely, being a wife and mother. It was more than a lofty resolution, it was working towards a way of positively living my life. Lara Casey explained it this way:

Goals can be overwhelming if they are not connected to what matters. They can make life busier. I don’t want a new to do list for my life; I want a clear, meaningful path. I want to know I’m living with intention and purpose instead of living by accident.”

Yes, yes and yes. I swear life is going by faster each day and sometimes I feel like I wasted the day without really getting anything done! Goals help me prioritize so I get the essentials done and not just fill my day with busy work.

I don’t even know what kind of goals I would make.

At this point I saw the value of making goals but I didn’t know what kind of goals to set. Using Lara Casey’s Powersheets really helped me to focus on the “big” goals of my life. She asked where would you like to be a year from now, ten years from now, or at the end of your life. Well, at the end of my life I hope I can say thatย  I… loved God and lived my life for Him, had a healthy and loving relationship with my husband, raised godly and kind children, developed lasting friendships, made creativity a part of my daily life and made a difference in the world by sharing God’s love with others. You know, little things like that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don’t know where to start to make my goals happen.

Next, I took those big goals (that will take me lifetime to complete) and broke them down into smaller goals and then broke those down into bite size things I can do each day. It helps to keep it specific and not vague. Example, instead of choosing “eat healthier” or “drink more water,” I’ll pick specific ways to do that. For example, cut up carrot stick and cucumber slices for a container in the fridge and grab them instead of chips for a snack. Or set the hourly alarm on my phone or watch and drink a cup of water when the alarm goes off. Even if I don’t always accomplish that, doing a little bit well is better than doing nothing.

Do goals really help?

When I reviewed over the goals I made at the beginning of the year, there were some I had to change because I accomplished the goal. That was such an amazing feeling! Then there were other goals that were still works in progress. No worries. I would simply keep working at them during the second half of 2018.

My Mid-Year 2018 Goals

For me, I preferred to divide my goals into five main areas of my life. I am a daughter of God, wife, mother, homemaker and woman. I have my main “big goal” and then I broke those down into mini-goals that will help me reach it. Here are some specific things I want to work on over the next month or so.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_daughterGoal #1: I want to nurture my relationship with the Trinity, seeing God as a loving Father, Jesus as my brother and the Holy Spirit as the One who inspires me and pushes me to share God’s love with others.

Mini-Goals:

  • Return to my morning prayer walks – When the kids started their summer vacation, I gave up my usual morning prayer walk that I used to do once I dropped them of at school. But by the end of June, I was missing it like crazy. It was such a source of peace, getting rid of stress, and drawing closer to God. I needed to go back to it! The only way I can make it happen to is to wake up an hour earlier and take my walk while the kids are sleeping and Brian is getting ready for work. It means no sleeping in but so far it seems worth it. I will continue it for a month and see if it is still worth it once the novelty wears off. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Make moments of quiet – I am the type of person that likes noise during the day. I’ll have a favorite playlist or the radio on, or the TV playing or I’m binge watching a show while I do laundry. That is fine but I feel like God is calling to take some time out of the day to turn off the noise and just be quiet and talk with Him.
  • Spiritual Reading – I love to read but 99% of the time I’ll grab the a novel. Yet, I have a huge pile of spiritual books I want to read. So I’ll make one of my reading times each week a spiritual read.
  • Confession – Mark the calendar and go every first Saturday.

* * *

Goal #2: To be a loving wife and continue to nurture my friendship and relationship with Brian.

Mini-Goals:

  • Talk Time – Brian and I chat all the time but sometimes we need time to talk and catch up on things that go deeper. I’ll make sure that one night a week we have time to sit and talk without the TV on.
  • Date nights – Having time by ourselves to go out and have fun has been really important to us. I’ll continue to make sure we schedule once a month and try to up it to 2x a month.
  • Daily act of kindness for Brian. – I haven’t done this in awhile but I’d like to be intentional about this once again. It was such a positive thing for both of us. (For more info, refer to – 25 Acts of Kindness for your Husband.)

* * *

Goal #3: To be a strong and loving mother who helps her children love God, be responsible and feel loved and part of a happy family.

Mini-Goals:

  • Spend more time with the boys one on one.ย  – Bella and I often have our girl outings but I’d like to spend more time with the boys, particularly cooking, playing, working on projects, reading aloud or watching a movie together. Summer is the perfect time to chose one or two activities a week.
  • Update the chore chart. –ย  We always update the chores in summer to add more responsibility. I have to work on not “just doing it myself” because it is faster and I can do it better. I need to let go and let them learn how to do more around the house, even if it’s not perfect.
  • Life lessons for Bella – Now that she’s starting her junior year, that means Bella needs to learn/practice more life lessons like how to drive (what?!), balance a checkbook, shop for dinner on a budget and cook the meal. (Heck, I’m still trying to learn that.)
  • Make a flexible schedule – Although I love the carefree days of summer, there does need to be some coordination to make sure we don’t miss any summer classes and that we best plan which days work for fun outings. Plus, I don’t mind the kids’ having screen time but a time limit it a must (or we’d ALL be vegged out in front of a screen.)

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_homemakerGoal #4: Run an organized home because when things run smoother it brings greater peace in our family life.

Mini Goals:

  • Update our monthly budget and keep a daily log of spending. – I had been doing better with this, but lately have gotten way off track. Time to reign it in.
  • Continue with the purge and fill 1-2 bags a week with unused or outgrown items.
  • Weekly meal plan and update “Favorite Meals” reference list. – I am always stumped on what to make for dinner so meal planning is a must. Plus the boys want to help cook so we need to update our meal list.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_womanGoal #5 – Be a well-balanced woman who has her own interest and pursuits and isn’t afraid to challenge herself.

Mini-Goals:

  • Get up before kids 5x a week to do my morning beach walk. – Continue working on my #rol100milesin100days challenge.
  • Continue to track weight, blood pressure and blood sugar to make sure I stay in the normal range.
  • Write more – Spend 15-30 minutes a day writing (or studying about using better writing skills) whether it’s in my journal, blogging or working on a Blessed Is She assignment. Post to the blog 1x a week
  • Build my online community – I love my circle of online friends and my best connections seems to be with IG/Instastories. Post more there and perhaps try out IGTV.
  • Build my IRl life community – Having online friends is great but I miss my in real life friends. This summer I’ll call up some old friends I haven’t seen in awhile. Plus I’ll develop my budding friendships with the local Blessed Is She group.

Since I’m using Lara Casey’s goal making system, I purchased her 2018 Powersheets, although they are currently sold out. However, you can use her online 2018 goal series and follow the whole process using your own notebook. That is what I did last year. I never bought the Powersheet and instead I answered all the questions and made the inspiration boards and used my bullet journal. You can see how I did it here.

Although I love Lara’s system, you don’t have to go through her series! You can think of your own goals and steps to make them happen.

Now that I have my goals set, I wanted to add them to my planner. This year I switched from the full-size Blessed Is She Planner and got the mini-sized Blessed Is She Planner instead.

I love that there is a monthly goal section! It is divided into five areas of a woman’s life – faith focus, personal, family, work and fun. It matched well with my five areas of life and I filled in each with my goals. I am ready to make some progress! ๐Ÿ™‚

What about you? Do you make goals? What is the one thing that you really want to work on this month(s)? Do share!

This Week’s Fave Connections

Meeting Up with Family and Friends

Road trip with my mom to San Jose.

I had been looking forward to this retreat for a long time and since my mom and dad were in town for John-Paul’s First Communion on Sunday, I thought it would be great for my mom and I to attend the retreat together on Saturday.ย  However, in all honestly, by the week of the retreat, I was tempted to just forget it. Our schedule was already packed and it seemed like things kept going wrong, although in my heart I knew I was meant to be there. I suspected that the evil one also knew it was important and was doing all he could to discourage me. Luckily once my mom was here I felt a better and I knew everything would work out just fine. ๐Ÿ™‚

I got to spend the day with 1/5 of my BIS Team sisters

Having three sisters of my own, I know the bond you can have with another female, despite your personality differences. I am blessed to have found that same kind of sisterhood with the Blessed Is She sisters. I love, love, love my husband and he is my best friend but he is not a “girl friend” who understand the female need to connect with another woman.

This Week’s Fave Lesson about Myself

Come Alive

Emily Wilson is an amazing woman – beautiful on the inside and out. This was the first time I heard her speak live and she did not disappoint. I was scribbling notes as quickly as I could andย  letting the tears flow freely. There were so many great points I’ve been pondering but one of my favorites was when she reminded us that “each women has their own light that only they can bring to the word.” The theme that each of us is unique and we have our own special gifts and a purpose in this life is one that is strong on my heart so when I hear it being shared I get excited!

For the past few years I had struggled with comparing myself with others and not feeling “good enough.” God has been teaching me and healing me of that feeling but as much progress as I’ve made, there are always areas in which God wants to dig a little deeper and heal us a little more. That’s what this weekend was for me.

I know I sometimes feel like there are two versions of me. The friendly, but quieter, version that would rather take a seat unseen in the back of the room. Then there is the more outgoing let’s-sit-in-the-front-row version of me that only family and a few close friends see. My goal is to become more comfortable in letting my “real” self come out more and not be afraid to just be myself and not to worry about what other people may think.

On the way to the retreat my mom and I were listing to the “Greatest Showman” soundtrack and although I love the song “This Is Me” I feel like I’m still figuring out who I really am. Instead, I am living the song “Come Alive.” These lyrics just highlight one of the lessons the Holy Spirit is teaching me”

“Come alive, come alive
Go and ride your light
Let it burn so bright
Reaching up
To the sky
And it’s open wide
You’re electrified…”

I feel like once I truly surrender then I’ll be able to say “This Is Me” because when we surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit and embrace who were are – good points and quirks alike – then we can come more fully alive. Our light is meant to bring warmth and brightness to those around us. I don’t want to keep that light dim out of fear. I want the courage to let it shine and make the world around me a little brighter because of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

This Week’s Fave Lesson about the Holy Spirit

The Spirit is Moving

Tricia Tembreull is a firecracker for the Lord and she really brought the point home that the Holy Spirit is alive and moving and that Jesus wants to unleash the Holy Spirit in us. I can’t help but remember how the apostles were after Jesus’ death – discouraged, scared and hiding. However, after the Holy Spirit was let lose they were like new men. So much so, that the people thought they were drunk! That same Holy Spirit is ready to move in our lives to and to work through us. Are we willing to let Him?

This Week’s Fave Image of God

God as the Reckless Lover

The theme of God’s “Reckless Love” has been on my heart every day since the retreat. This was especially brought home by Beth Davis’ talk. I needed to be reminded that God doesn’t just want my Mass attendance or my obligatory 15 minutes of prayer, He wants my heart. Moment after moment, situation after situation, He is running after my heart and trying to win over my trust. He loves me more than I can understand it frankly, it still baffles me. Lately, it’s all I can think about during prayer. This reckless, all consuming Love and how I can return that love back to Him.

This Week’s Fave Music

Praise & Worship with Mary Costner

I fell in love with @marycastnermusic this weekend. #bisretreat

A post shared by Bobbi Rol (@bobbi_rol) on

I am relatively new to Praise and Worship music and I’m not a real “raise your hands” person but by the end of the retreat Mary’s beautiful voice and gentle encouragement had me loving all the music and lifting my hands as we worshiped, to the delight of my charismatic mom. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This Week’s Fave Moment

Jesus Comes to Me in the Eucharist

Godโ€™s reckless love is overwhelming. ๐Ÿ˜ญโค๏ธ #bisretreat

A post shared by Bobbi Rol (@bobbi_rol) on

The retreat ended with Benediction and Father brought Jesus in the Monstrance to each of us and it was a powerful witness to the reckless love of God that seeks us out. Our Lord will not rest until He finds us and draws us back to Him.

As I knelt there in prayer waiting for Father, I just kept thinking to myself… I feel like my heart has been completely torn apart. I am in pieces. That’s when Jesus whispered to me that He allowed me to be torn apart so He could put me back together properly.

It reminded me of when my kids were little and they were trying to put a puzzle together. Sometimes they had the pieces in the wrong places and they kept trying to shove it in but it didn’t work because that piece was not meant for that place. That’s how my heart was. I had pieces in the wrong places and trying to shove them into to fit and Jesus had to undo it all in order to place everything back properly. Instead of a jumbled mess, He put my heart back together as it was meant to be. Cue tears.

UPDATE: This post is about the 2018-2019 Academic Planner (Aug 18-July 2019.) That planner has sold out.

Hey guys! Have the days been as busy for you as they have been for me? Usually things get really crazy in May but this year the crazy started early in April with so many school functions, family events and life happenings. The only thing keeping me from losing my head is making sure I keep track of everything and write it down in my planner. I’ve tried using electronic versions on my phone and computer but I can’t help it, I’m a paper and pen girl. I like the feel of the paper, the scratch of the pen and if it’s color coded, well, bonus!

Since I have four kiddos in school my life revolves around the school year schedule. So come January, I’m not looking for a new planner. But come spring, I am! As you may know, I am a big fan of the Blessed Is She Liturgical Planner! I love it! Although to be completely honest, the one thing I complained about it was its larger size. It wouldn’t be a problem if the planner stayed in my home but I need to bring it with me to appointments and school meetings and I just wished they had a smaller version.

Guess what? My wish came true! There are now two options for the new 2018-2019 planner.

The original (8 x 10) size and the mini sized (6.25 x 8.25) version!! (Insert your favorite happy dance gif)

She Who Believed: The Blessed Is She 2018 Lent Journal

It’s January 12 and I am still taking down the last of the Christmas decor. However, I’m also looking at the calendar in disbelief. Is Lent really only a month away?? It’s not possible! But the package I just received in the mail says IT IS possible because my Blessed Is She Lent Journal has arrived. Yay!

(This post contains affiliate links.)

Okay, so part of me dreads Lent (where.is.the.chocolate.) and part of me loves the chance to stop, reflect and draw closer to God. Having the Blessed Is She journal to guide me along the way makes it all that much better. The journal was written by Laura Fanucci of Mothering Spirit.com (who also wrote the Advent 2017 journal) so you know it will be good.

Each day we will follow the same format – Read, Reflect, Respond and Pray. I especially love that the book explores the stories of women in the Bible (Old and New Testament) to learn what they teach us about prayer.

Laura explains it this way:

The journal also looks at four common types of prayerโ€”adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and petitionโ€”and how real women wrestled with God about their struggles, their joys, and the deepest longings of their heart. My hope is that this Lent can be a season of entering into renewed relationship with God. Learning from the wisdom of those who have walked this way before us.

Another beautiful aspect of the journal is that Laura integrated “pause” days that would allow us to catch up (because, you know… life!) or to spend more time reflecting a favorite passage.

Lastly, although this book is called a journal, do not think that you are obligated to write or draw in it. It is a beautiful devotional on it’s own without ever having to life a pen. Plus, it is simply lovely to look at, thanks to the incredible talent of ย Erica Tighe of Be A Heart Design.

If you have a Blessed Is She Membership then the Lent journal will be auto-shipped to you. Otherwise, the journal is available in the BIS shop to purchase. There is also a gorgeous Lent Bundle that includes the following:

The Journal

The 8×10 She Who Believed Print and

Mary’s Way of the Cross Cards

So, will be joining me on this She Who Believed Lenten journey? I hope so!

I’ll be posting my thoughts throughout Lent and you can follow along in the Blessed Is She community using the hashtags #BISLent and #BISsiterhood. Let’s do this together and encourage one another. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s Here! The 2017 Blessed Is She Advent Journal

The other day I was updating my music playlists and I accidentally tapped O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by Sixpence None the Richer. The boys ran into the room exclaiming, “We love this song!” They sang along and asked when we could start listing to Christmas music. Well, we are eager beavers in our house and start holiday prepping the day after Halloween. It may be way too early for some but it’s not to early to start thinking about getting your spiritual gear for Advent 2017!

Last year I used the Blessed Is She Advent journal and it was such a blessing to me. I am not exactly one to relish quieting myself down and I struggle to tame my mile-a-minute thoughts but the Advent journal really helped me to stop and focus on what matters the most during Advent – preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ.

This year’s Advent Journal was written by the lovely author and blogger Laura Fanucci and it was designed by the talented Erica Tighe of Be A Heart Design. I was thumbing through the journal and on the very first day it said:

Remember: what God desires is to be with you. To be in deepest relationship with you. To love you. Let yourself be in this moment with God. This is the heart of Advent: preparing your heart to receive Christ again. Remember that you can always return to the power and simplicity of this place – this eternal present moment of being with God in prayer.”

The word that jumped out at me was “Simplicity” because that was my word of 2017. It is as if God is bringing me full circle and reminding me of what He wanted me to focus on at the beginning of 2017. The simplicity of just being with Him. To realize that God desires to be with me and that taking the time to be with Him will change my life. I am so looking forward to using my Advent journal to help me spend that quiet re-connecting time with God.

With that in mind, I am excited to announce that the new 2017 Blessed Is She Advent journal is now available for purchase. It may seem too early to worry about it but I do encourage you to get it sooner rather than later because it always sells out. (And there are always people messaging me and emailing me to see if I know where they can get a stashed copy!)

Along with the journal, you will find the “There Is Wonder” print.

And this adorableAnything Can Happen” mug!

Or you can just do what I did and purchase the sale priced Advent Bundle that includes the journal, print and the mug. (Inset heart eyes smiley face!)

When you purchase your journal, feel free to share photos of you holding or using the journal. Use the hashtag #BISadvent so we can encourage one another on this journey of Advent!

Many blessings,
