Pinterest Party & Link-up (Vol 24): I’m Too Stressed to Be Creative So I Went to the Movies Instead (Mom’s Night Out)

Welcome to the RoL Pinterest Party. Join me every 2nd and 4th Tuesday as we link up and share how we made, cooked, baked, crafted, planned, organized, followed or created one of the pins on our Pinterest boards OR share something original that others can pin onto their boards.

Sorry for the delay on this week’s Pinterest Party! I have been on an unplanned blogging break. Frankly, I have been too busy to even look at Pinterest, let alone try anything new so I am afraid I don’t have any new recipe or bit of creativity to share. Things have been so go, go, go and I have been a little stressed. (I can hear Brian snicker, “A little?!) Add that to a small bout of writers block and you get the picture. No bueno. So last night Brian kicked me out of the house, literally. Lucky for me I had just enough time to catch the evening showing of the new movie Mom’s Night Out.

I was not sure what to expect. It was getting a lot of faith based promotion, and I admit that I assumed it would be on the “lower budget” end of movies, therefore not as good as something mainstream. However, this movie was able to find a balance of being a well made movie and yet it had a positive message – even using speaking about God and Jesus directly without being preachy.

In a nutshell, the story is about a mommy blogger (the line about her having four blog followers and she just lost one, had me giggling. ;-)) with three kids. Her view of the perfect mom doesn’t coincide with her own chaotic, messy life. She and two other mommy friends (including Patricia Heaton’s character as the preacher’s wife) decided to go on a Mom’s night out. I thought this first part of the movie was hilarious, especially the voice over, the screen shots of their text messages and the cameo of the Hulk. (I was having a Bruce Banner moment just earlier in the day.)  The middle part of the movie is a little far fetched with the whole lost baby scenario but there were also parts that had me laughing my mascara off. (“Say hello to my little sippy cup.” and “He killed mama.”)

However, the conversation between Ally and Bones had me in tears because it was healing to hear that despite whatever limitations we may have, God gave our children just the mama they needed. We were chosen for them. God gives us the grace we need to be a good mom (and wife), we just need to let go of our insecurities and hang ups and instead hang onto Him so we can see the beauty in the mess. 🙂

For a full movie review check out my favorite movie loving nun – Sr. Helen Burns.

And I didn’t see this until this morning but CatholicMom.com also has a number of blog posts regarding the movie in their A Real Life Look series. There’s some great commentary on the movie and mommy life. 🙂

Speaking of CatholicMom.com, I pinned this yesterday. Today  is the last day of the contest, so join the fun. (But don’t join too many times cuz I really want to win. ;-))

Anyway, this weekend, I’ll try to get a sitter so I can see the movie again with Brian. He’ll love the slap stick comedy parts.

Have you seen the movie yet? What was your favorite scene?

And for the rest of you who were more creative than I was, below is the Pinterest Party link-up. If you did a movie review of Mom’s Night Out, please link it below so I can read it. 🙂

7 Quick Takes (3/22/13): Movies, More Movies & HolyLens and Theme Thursday: Rich

I’m a little late but I’m linking up with Jen for 7 Quick Takes and Cari for Theme Thursday: Rich. (Scroll down to #7 for that.) 🙂

~ 1 ~

Well, I took a blogging break this week. Not by choice but more by circumstance. It has been such a busy week that I haven’t had the time, particularly since I am trying to get to bed a little earlier at night. Plus, what spare time I do have I’ve been trying to work on the Restore Workshop. It has actually been going well even though there were a few days I didn’t even touch the material. However, I have been making up the days I missed so I’ll be on track by Monday. I’ll share more of what God’s been teaching me next week.

~ 2 ~

The other day my little brother sent me an invite to join Letterboxd.com. If  you are unfamiliar with it, the same way Goodreads is for those who like to share what they are reading, Letterboxd is for those who like to share what movies they watch. It’s fun for me to see what my brother is watching and get recommendations for my Netflix queue. In the next couple of weeks I’ll be putting together some lists such as – My Fave Hitchcock Movies, Fave Classic Movies, My Fave Literary Adaptations, Fave Religious Movies and Movies Bella and I Enjoy Watching Together and more. If you have a Twitter or Facebook account you can link them together. (People can follow you just as they do on Twitter.) If you do join let me know so I can add you as a movie friend. 🙂 You can find me here.

~ 3 ~

Waiting for the movie to start and eating popcorn with missing teeth. (Note to self – the boys need a haircut.) 🙂

Speaking of movies, Friday night it was Family Fun Night at the kid’s school. The kids bring their sleeping bags and blanket to the gym and watch a movie with popcorn and a light dinner provided. The movie was Frozen, which Bella and I already saw but the boys hadn’t seen it yet. Bella was eager to sit with her friends but the three amigos stuck together with me and Brian and the popcorn. It was actually a lot of fun. 🙂

~ 4~

Oh and speaking of Frozen, have you seen the video of the guy  singing “Let It Go” in the voices of 21 Disney and Pixar characters?? If you haven’t seen it yet it is worth watching! Very impressive. 🙂

~ 5 ~

When we got home Friday night we put the kids to bed then Brian and I settled down for a Friday night movie. I rented two and we chose to watch The Great Gatsby. Did you like it? I couldn’t stand it. After about 20 minutes or so I looked over at Brian’s uninterested face and said, “This is so boring!” He agreed. Maybe it was the stylized way it was filmed or the depressing storyline. I don’t know. We turned it off and I decided to read the book instead. Good thing I also rented The Amazing Spiderman. Maybe that says something about my intellect, but I actually really enjoyed that one and will most likely watch the upcoming The Amazing Spiderman 2 coming to theaters on May 2. 🙂

~ 6 ~

So you don’t think I only watch movies, there was also an interesting post my sister had on her Facebook page – BBC Believes You Only Read 6 of These Books… The average Goodreads member has read 23 out of 100 books on this list. I need to read one more to hit that since I’ve only read 22 so far. How did you do?

~ 7 ~

Lastly, I feel like I dialed it in for this week’s Theme Thursday: Rich since I remembered about it late Thursday night while I was in line at the theater to watch Divergent so I had to use the photos I had on my phone and some apps to make this collage before the movie started. But the sentiment remains the same. These guys make me RICH!

And since my mom isn’t on Instagram, here are some of the other #holylens photos I’ve posted. (Enjoy, mom.) 🙂

House

I pass this cute house when I take the kids to school.

***

Master

My little master of disguises is still on his superhero kick.

***

Covenant

It was 14 1/2 years ago that I entered into a marriage covenant with this amazing man.

***

Mercy

“Do not thou, O Lord, withhold thy mercies from me, let thy steadfast love & thy faithfulness ever preserve me.” Psalms 40:11.

***

Law

We’re teaching the kids God’s laws with the help of Surfer Dude Jesus.

***

Reconcile

I’m reconciled to the fact that my fun Friday nights now involve staying in, choosing a movie from our movie bins and maybe even sneaking in a bowl of cereal. #partylikeamom

***

Contrite

This morning I wrote an apology note to Brian. I was feeling contrite for expecting him to read my mind instead of me coming straight out and telling him what’s wrong.

***

Father

This is one of my favorite places to sit and talk to my Father. The beauty and majesty of his creation is a constant reminder that if he can do *anything*. Likewise, in his eyes, we are his beautiful creations.

Happy Sunday!

7 Quick Takes (12/28/12): Anniversary, Romance & Duck Dynasty

Hosted by Jen.

~~ 1 ~~

Mawage is wot bwings us togeder today – A great big happy 13th anniversary to my sweetheart! It may be a cliché but it feels like it was just yesterday, yet I feel like I’ve known Brian all my life. Maybe because he was an answer to my prayers long before I knew him.

~~ 2~~

Now you are my Mr Knightly – It’s funny that when I was single and still living at home, I remember watching love stories with my sister and we’d love it but laugh and yell, “Fake!” at the screen. This was in the mid to late 90’s when all the amazing Jane Austen adaptations came out such as the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion etc. All those tender love scenes were simply the dreams of fairy tales…until I met Brian.

I distinctly remember one scene in Emma (with Gwenyth Palthrow) when Mr. Knightly professed his love to Emma as the music swelled and small flower blossoms fell from the tree. It was picture perfect.

I think back to the first weekend Brian and I finally spent together. (We met online and corresponded for 5 months before meeting in person. By then I already knew I was going to marry him.) There was one point when we attended a Marian Conference and during the lunch break we found a grassy area under a tree to have a picnic. Suddenly, a nearby building turned on their sound system and classical music stared playing in the background. Then a breeze rustled through the tree and small flower blossoms started falling from the sky as Brian turned to me and gave me that “look of love” that said he wanted nothing more than to kiss me. Part of me was reeling and the other part of me was inwardly yelling, “Fake!” Stuff like this does not happen in real life. (If you want the whole story of how we met, you can read it here.)

Well, it was real and 13 years later we have far too few moments lounging under a blossom tree but he’ll still get that “look” when he has to steal a kiss. So the fairy tale lives on, you just have to look and listen a little harder with all the family chaos surrounding it. 😉 Here’s proof. I still find love notes left for me. Swoon.

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (and his coffee cup) – Speaking of Brian, for Christmas I made him one of those baskets I talked about in my Gift Ideas for Guys. It was all his favorites things to have a relaxing afternoon. Along with books, a blank journal and treats, I added a new coffee mug and coffee. He loved them! We have long been supporters of Mystic Monk Coffee but bought it less once we switched to the Keurig single cup coffee maker. But I’m happy to see that Mystic Monk now carries the single serving K-cups. (Which are also compatible with other single serving machines.)  Brian loved the Mystic Monk blend and I will buy more of the other flavors. (Note: I think they sold out of the Mysitc Monk blend but hopefully more will be available soon. They do have other flavors ready.)

 “Monk Shot” single serving coffee

Here is the mug I bought him.

Are you seriously watching this? – Okay, here is another speaking of Brian story. The other day Brian was up late and I could hear him laughing at something on TV. Usually when he is watching TV it is either on EWTN or the NFL channel so I wasn’t sure what would be so funny. I go into the family room and he is laughing hysterically and I saw these guys on the screen.

Yes, it is the millionaire “rednecks” of Duck Dynasty. At first I could not believe Brian would be watching a show like this but he convinced me to sit down for a minute and soon I was laughing so hard I was crying. Granted that is not hard to make me do but still these guys are so over the top it’s hilarious. Here’s a little taste of an episode we recently watched.

~~ 5 ~~

And this one is fuzzy but Si as a scary Christmas elf is a classic.

~~ 6 ~~

I need rehab – Okay, I am sitting here staring at the screen wondering what to write next. I usually jot down ideas for QT on my iphone notes but one of the boys has confiscated my phone to play Star Wars Angry Birds and as he sits here quietly at my feet, I can’t bear to disturb him. I also jot down ideas in my planner but since Christmas my desk has slowly relapsed into a candidate for a hoarders reality show and my planner if buried under a pile. Like an alcoholic who fell off the wagon, I have fallen off the organizational wagon and if these piles on my desk get any higher, I won’t be able to see the computer screen. You think I’m joking? My kiddo just returned my phone. I’ll snap a pic.

Yesterday the blog I’m An Organizing Junkie posted Introducing the New Year’s Organizing Revolution!! So maybe I should check it out and get back on track. It takes a while to build up but I have that “I’ve got to clean this mess or I’m gonna scream” feeling right now and I have to seize it before it fades away. So let’s wrap this up.

~~ 7 ~~

Anne with an E – Did you notice the angry bird calendar in the above photo? My sis BC bought that for the boys to hang in their bedroom. This week we had the pleasure of watching the Star Wars trilogy for the first time with them. (I fast forwarded a bit of the scarier parts) but they loved it. John-Paul is amazed that they made three movies about one phone app. Every time he came into the room and saw Darth Vader on the screen he yelled, “It’s Angry Bird pig!”  LOL.

The next movie I want to watch for the first time with my kids is actually a movie for Bella and me. She just read Anne of Green Gables so I thought she’d enjoy watching the movie with me. Can you believe it’s been over 25 years since that movie came out?! Am I really that old?? Never mind. Don’t answer that.

Have a wonderful last weekend of 2012!!

9/5/03 – Lord of the Rings

Hello, All. I am back from our trip a little earlier than expected. We were in great need of a little cooling fog! Actually we had a wonderful time. Brian said that this was one of his most enjoyable trips and it was. I get such a recharge seeing my family, although leaving them behind again is always tough. But I am thankful we live relatively close. Heck, what’s a 7 hour drive these days? And Bella is getting to be such a trooper in the car.
I am so proud of her! It is also nice to be back home. No matter where you go and how much you have it is always a wonderful feeling to return to your home and simple life. (Well, “simple” in theory, at least.)

I’ve been reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy and I just finished The Two Towers last night. I want to finish it all before I see the final movie. It was almost 1am but I could not put the book down until I finished it! (If you hate movie ending-spoilers, skip to the next paragraph!) I was heartbroken when Sam thought Frodo was killed by Shelob. I couldn’t believe that he would die that way! There was no way that stinkin Shelob was going to end it all like that! But the tragic ending was filled with hope that all is not yet lost and Frodo could still be saved! Man, I can’t wait for Bella to go to sleep tonight so I can catch a few more pages! There’s nothing like reading an incredible story for the first time and not really knowing how things will turn out.

It’s funny but watching Lord of the Ring and Two Towers has been incredibly uplifting for me lately. The way society is going with so much evil and sin around that it sometimes feels like we are helpless and hopeless. It’s as if there’s a huge dam with a growing crack and we’re trying to repair it with a band aid. You know it’s only a matter of time until the dam breaks and you’ll be swept away in a tide of water.

Yet when I see Frodo, Sam and the company working for a common, almost-impossible, goal and fighting a larger-than-life evil, I see us. God has placed a task in our hands (loving Him above all else and joining Him in heaven with as many people as we can help bring along with us) and in the meantime there is a powerful enemy hell-bent on making us fail. And just as Sam and Frodo had friends and gifts that helped them on the dangerous journey, we have the Sacraments and the Church to guide us and give us the strength we need to carry on and fight until the end of our days. It’s something I have to remind myself often. We’re in this together!
