Do small things with great love.

31 Days of Gratitude (Day 2): The Waves of God’s Love

The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 2 of my 31 Days of Gratitude.

It’s been a busy day and I haven’t been home so I am just now getting a chance to post. This morning we were getting our carpets cleaned so I had to stay out of the house for a few hours. I finished my errands and appointments early so after my walk, I grabbed my camera and took some photos of the ocean. In Monterey, our summers are filled with fog but October is our warm season – blue skies and near 90 degree heat! It’s rare I get such a clear shot without any clouds or fog.

I honestly never tire at marveling at the ocean and it’s power. It always reminds me of God’s love. Stretching out farther than the eye can see. As I was thinking about this, the song Relentless by Hillsong – Zion started playing over my headphones.

The lyrics read:

Salvation sounds a new beginning ~ As distant hearts begin believing ~ Redemption’s bid is unrelenting ~ Your love goes on ~ Your love goes on

CHORUS: You carry us ~ Carry us ~ When the world gives way ~ You cover us ~ Cover us ~ With Your endless grace ~ Your love is relentless ~ Your love is relentless ~ Your love is relentless ~ Your love is relentless

VERSE: The time is up for chasing shadows ~ You gave the world a light to follow ~ A hope that shines beyond tomorrow ~ Your love goes on ~ Your love goes on

BRIDGE: Tearing through the veil of darkness ~ Breaking every chain You set us free ~ Fighting for the furthest heart You gave ~ Your life for all to see.

It’s the chorus that gets me – Your love is relentless.

Seriously, God’s love is crazy when you think about it. No matter how many times I mess up, no matter how far I drift away, He is constantly beckoning me and seeking me out.

God’s love reminds me of a gentle waves that washes over my bare feet. It’s calm and soothing and restores my soul. It is a whisper to the heart.

But sometimes, well, sometimes God gives me some tough love. He pulls me out of my comfort zone or asks me to carry a cross that feels way too big. That’s when his love feels like a crashing wave that is overwhelming and I can barely stand upright. But just as the waves can erode solid rock, those waves of love chip away at my hardened heart and form something new within me. I just don’t realize it until after the storm has passed.

I’m grateful that God’s love is vast and relentless. It is reassuring to know that whether I am in the throes of crashing waves or enjoying the respite of a gentle wave along the sand, God will see me through.

31 Days of Writing Challenge: Intro

Photo credit & host of 31 Days is Nester at write31days.com

* * *

This year I will be participating in Nester’s 31 Days Writing Challenge. If it is new to you, here are the details fromΒ write31days.com.

31 Days is an online writing challenge started by home blogger, Myquillyn Smith (The Nester) where bloggers pick one topic and write a post on that topic every day in October.

I just heard about it the other day and I thought it would be a fun challenge, although I wasn’t sure I could handle doing a post every day for a month. I decided to make it easier on myself by combining elements I am already working on right now – being more grateful for the blessings in my every day life, particularly on stressful days, and spending time each day being creative, particularly by taking photos.

So my challenge in October 2014 will be…

I’ll be posting each day on the blog but I also made a landing page with a link on the main menu above and a button in the side bar. I’ll post the links to each day for easy reference.

There are hundreds of blogs participating in the challenge. There are various topics including house & home, family life, simplicity & organizing, faith & inspiration, fashion & beauty, food/health & wellness, writing/blogging and more! Be sure to hop over to write31days.com and browse the other participants. πŸ™‚ It should be fun!

See you back here tomorrow for the first photo and reflection. πŸ™‚

Pinterest Party & Link-up (Vol 25): How I Use PicMonkey on My Blog

Sorry that I missed the last Pinterest Party. I have been on a blogging break but the party is back! This week I am sharing about one of my favorite blogging tools – PicMonkey. πŸ™‚

Welcome to the RoL Pinterest Party. Join me every 2nd and 4th Tuesday as we link up and share how we made, cooked, baked, crafted, planned, organized, followed or created one of the pins on our Pinterest boards OR share something original that others can pin onto their boards.

Not on Pinterest? No problem. Link-up your own creation to inspire us so we can pin in to our own boards. It can be a recipe, sewing project, Catholic craft, homeschool project, organizing/ homemaking tip, themed birthday party, whatever you’d like.

Don’t have a post ready? The link-up will be open for 10 days so there’s still time. Plus, feel free to link up a new post or an older post that hasn’t had much traffic lately. πŸ™‚

* * * * *

A fellow blogger was asking me how I liked PicMonkey and since I’m a big fan I thought a quick post about how I use it blogging would be fun. Although I have Photoshop, for my everyday blogging I use PicMonkey 99% of the time. Here are the top ways I use it.

Crop & Edit

This was the original photo I took. I wanted to crop out the telephone wires and excess background.

I cropped it out and changed the color to black and white for a more classic feel.

This is my original photo.

I cropped the photo, lightened it a little and used the Urban filter to get this.

SIZE NOTE: I usually post my regular phot0s to be 640 in length.

* * *

Add A Copyright

It is super easy to simply add a copyright using your choice of font.

* * *

Word Memes

Like adding a copyright, PicMonkey makes it easy to add verses to your photos.

* * *

Make & Add A Watermark

Do you prefer to make a watermark?Β  Here’s how I made a quick and easy one. In PicMonkey, I clicked the Design Tab. Then I clicked the Font tab and wrote Revolution of Love Blog using my signature font. Next I cropped it. Lastly I clicked the Canvas tab and clicked Transparent canvas. I now have a watermark.

To add that to a photo, I followed PicMonkey’s directions found here. It says:

1. Open a photo in PicMonkey.
2. Click the “Overlay” tab on the far left side of the panel (it’s the butterfly).
3. Click “Your Own” at the top of the list of overlays.
4. A box will pop up that allows you to select from the files on your computer. Select your previously created logo or watermark.
5. You can change the color, fade it, erase parts of it, and select one of the preset Blend Modes, or rotate the overlay.

Here is the final result.

* * *

Blog Post Buttons

I am reworking my blog’s side panel and I thought I’d make buttons for the Background Posts.

I chose a photo, resized it, cropped it, added the title, then rounded the corners using the Frame button. Done and done.

SIZE NOTE: My side bar buttons are 300 x 125.

* * *

Facebook Cover

Making a Facebook banner is super easy. Here’s how I made mine. I clicked the Collage button then the FB Cover button. I chose my photos that I wanted to drop into the collage cells. (There are a number of different preset styles you can choose or you can change the cells to make your own style.) Lastly, I edited each photo until it looked right. Viola.

There are lots of ways you can design your collage but instead of giving you detailed instructions, just go to this PicMonkey tutorial page How to Make a Collage for details. πŸ˜‰

Fun for Font Fans

Photo Credit – PicMonkey

When I browse Pinterest I get giddy when someone posts various free fonts that can be downloaded. I love cute fonts! So I was excited when I found out that I was no longer limited to using the fonts offered on PicMonkey. Any font you have on your computer can be used in PicMonkey. Get the instructions here.

Β Making Invitations

Besides blogging, I have also used PicMonkey to edit my personal photos and to make crafts such as this birthday invitation from Bella’s last birthday. Bella wanted a Newsies (the musical) party so I took a copy of the handbill and using the overlay button (the butterfly) I added the banner and typed in the words “You Are Invited.” I also added the comic bubble and the “Extra! Extra!” bit.

For the inside of the invitation I used as my foundation a photo of various newsprints. I placed the overlay “Paper scrap” over it. I enlarged it and tilted it. Then I typed out the party details.

When we were done we printed them and mailed them out. They came out really cute. πŸ™‚

* * *

So these are some of the ways I use PicMonkey. I am such a fan I signed up for their affiliate program. Go check them out. You can use their basic features for free.Β  If you want the extras and no ads, the Royale features are available for a monthly fee of $4.95 or $33 a year. Right now they are offering a week of Royale for free so you can give it a test run. Enjoy!

Now it’s your turn.

1. Choose your creation, share about it and snap a photo if you can.

2. In your post, link back the original blogger/idea, rather than your Pinterest pin. That way credit goes to the proper person. πŸ™‚ (But feel free to add your Pinterest profile link so we can follow you!)

3. Add a link back here so others can play along.

4. If you want to use it, here is the html code for the logo:

<a href=”http://www.revolutionoflove.com/blog/?p=2157″><img title=”Revolution of Love Blog – Pinterest Party &amp; Link-up” src=”http://www.revolutionoflove.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/pinterest_2_medW32-300×240.jpg” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”240″ /></a>

5. Link up below. Make sure you’re sending us to your actual post, and not to your general blog address.

Lastly, you can follow me on Pinterest here: http://pinterest.com/rol_bobbi/. πŸ™‚

The link up will be active for 10 days. Have fun!

Online Daybook (6/2/14): Family Walks, Menus and Praying over a Dirty Toilet

Moments of Gratitude…

Today I am especially thankful for

  • Family walks
  • Wildflowers
  • The sound of the kids’ giggles.
  • Stolen kisses in the kitchen.
  • Words of encouragement.
  • Almost the end of school.
  • Summer plans.

Beauty in the Ordinary…

Β I went for my morning walk and there were fishing boats everywhere.

Β

If you like fresh sea food and gorgeous ocean views, come visit Monterey, CA. πŸ™‚ (The askew shot of the horizon is bugging me but I love the colors.)

In the Kitchen…

M – Chili beans, cornbread and broccoli.

T – Chicken cacciatore with brown rice and roasted asparagus.

W – Tacos with Southwestern Black Bean Salad.

Th – Leftovers.

F – Chef Salad topped with BBQ chicken.

S – Homemade wheat pizza and Greek salad.

S – It’s Andrew’s birthday so he got to pick his favorite. He wanted tuna melts followed by chocolate cake. πŸ™‚

Praying…

  • For Brian’s chemo and continued recovery from cancer.
  • For all those who are fighting cancer and other illnesses.
  • For family and friends who are pregnant.
  • For those trying to get pregnant that God will bless them with new life.
  • For those suffering from abuse, mental illness and addiction.
  • For the souls in purgatory.
  • For those most in need of God’s mercy.
  • For some special intentions.

On the homefront……

On Tuesday Brian started Round 4 of chemo. He has been doing really well and his blood work came out okay so we are hoping and praying things continue to go well. It’s crazy how many people are dealing with cancer right now. I mean, I knew it was a problem but not until it hit us personally did I really see how many lives are touched by it. Lately I feel like there has been one person after another that has died from cancer and it makes it harder to be positive and not dwelling on the worse. Thankfully, these last couple of days I have heard from or read about people who have fought cancer and have remained cancer-free for some time.

Life is so full of uncertainty, whether you are battling cancer or just being an innocent bystander, that you can’t really dwell on the “what ifs.” You’ve just got to keep your eyes on God and enjoy the time you’ve been blessed with your loved ones. That is sometimes difficult when I am knee deep in normal family chaos but the right attitude (andΒ  sense of humor) can make it not only bearable but enjoyable.

Pondering…

I’ve been trying to add more little acts of prayer to help combat my tendency to complain about the my mommy chores.

* * * * *

Previous Version – Scene 1: In the laundry room.

As I am sorting out clothes and I see that one of the littles used his sleeve as a napkin again and got chocolate stains on his light colored shirt. As I’m scrubbing the stain my mind says, “Ugh! Why did I ever buy this guy a light colored shirt. That was so stupid. And why can’t that kid ever use a napkin. HowΒ  many times have I told him not to wipe his mouth on his sleeve. And who gave him chocolate anyway? He’s only supposed to eat chocolate on the weekend. Ugh. It’s like talking to a wall around here…” (Anger rises until I snap at the next person who tries to talk to me.)

Updated version

As I’m scrubbing the stain, “Sigh. Chocolate stains. I give it to you, God. Scrubbing this stain is what you are asking of me at this moment in time but note to self – no more light colored shirts for the boys. How did he get chocolate anyway? Oh, yeah. That was when Opa babysat the kids so Brian and I could go out to lunch. Oh, that was so nice. I love spending time with Brian. How did I ever get so blessed to have such a man in my life….” (Brian comes into the laundry room and I give him a big kiss. He is more than pleased. ;-))

Previous Version – Scene 2: In the bathroom

One of my little men had trouble aiming into the toilet. As I am cleaning up the mess my mind says, “What is wrong with that kid? Why is it so hard for him to aim in the toilet? If he would stop fooling around and pay attention to what he is doing I wouldn’t be stuck here cleaning up this mess…”

Updated version

“He missed again. Well, at least he is finally potty trained. I remember how hard that was. He can be so stubborn at times. Brian says he gets that from me. haha. Lord, help my little guy and his stubborn ways. He has such a good and loving heart. Help me as a mom to bring out his best qualities…”

* * * * *

Yeah, okay so maybe I don’t always sound just like that and maybe I’m sometimes cussing under my breath but I have asked my guardian angel to nudge me when I am going to lose it and I do try to turn it into a prayer or not try to get so upset. And when I can’t get the words out I simply say a Hail Mary (or a decade) as I work. I’ve prayed many a Hail Marys as I’ve scrubbed a toilet. πŸ˜‰

Around the house…

Well, from the sounds of it dirty toilets and chocolate stains. πŸ˜‰

Reading…

I finished reading The Fault in Our Stars and will see the movie later this week. I have mixed feelings about the book. I’ll try and wrangle those thoughts to paper and post a review.

My next book to finish is Jen’s Something Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It. Loving it so far.

I have skimmed over The Little Oratory: A Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home but tonight I want to sit down and really focus on Chapter 1 so I can join along with Elizabeth and Leila as they discuss it on their podcast. Elizabeth is also hosting a link-up for you to share your own thoughts. Check it out here.

Listening to…

Relient K’s Collapsible Lung and Matthew and John-Paul laugh at the antics of Peppa Pig and George.

Watching…

Austenland (It was just so-so but I am a fan of the actor that played the Darcy-like character.) Saving Mr. Banks (Brian had not seen it yet.) The Book Thief (I really love this movie.)

On the blog…

I am putting together a list of weekly Link-Ups from various Catholic bloggers. I love link-ups, although I have been wanting to do a little more “meat and potato” posts than just link-ups. That is why I posted Despite What You May Think… You Are a Good Mom a couple days ago. I was reading through the comments and these three especially touched me and got me thinking about the topic even more…

One thing that encourages me is that I remember that even though I feel so far below those β€œperfect” moms, *I* am the mother that God chose for my children. Considering He doesn’t make mistakes, there must be good reason for them coming to me even though I don’t sew curtains or make wonderful meals or run marathons and couldn’t keep a blog going to save my life. I guess He knew that whatever strengths I have, those are the ones my kids need. It seems like God had the same thing in mind when he gave your kids to you, and your sister’s kids to her… (Sharon)

***

I think we all struggle with these feelings, but I also feel that whenever you undertake anything you care about you worry that you might not be giving it everything you can. And your children keep growing and changing so that you can’t really stay on top of things. So I try to remind myself that I have these feelings because I care so deeply and not because I am inadequate. But I am far from a perfect mother, of course! (Rita)

***

I think sometimes when we haven’t faced a particular challenge as a parent (or just in life) it’s hard to imagine what it’s really like. There are so many things that I just couldn’t have imagined and that I would have said was parenting before having a child on the spectrum and I think that having a kid with ASD has opened my eyes to how many different ways can be right, depending on the kid and family… (Cam)

I love the online interaction and in turn I will comment more on other blogs I read to let them know I appreciate their words. πŸ™‚

Also on the blog, being the month of June, which brings us many June brides,Β  I am working on a couple marriage related posts. I’m hoping the next Pinterest Party will be marriage related so get your posts raedy to link! It can be money saving tips, wedding decor or posts about living a God centered marriage. More details coming!

(I put the kids to bed and tuck in Brian with a good book or the remote and then head out for one of my favorite pastimes – watching a movie on the big screen.) This week it is The Fault in Our Stars. This weekend is also Andrew’s birthday and we wants an ocean theme party and a trip to the Aquarium. Fun. πŸ™‚

Theme Thursday: Answer & {pretty, happy, funny, real} vol. 85: Beautiful Hikes, Happy Days & Superheroes

I’m a day late but I am linking up with Cari for Theme Thursday: Answer (scroll down to the very last photo for that one) and Like Mother, Like Daughter for {pretty, happy, funny, real}.

{pretty}

In an earlier post I shared that during Lent I wanted to regain my happiness in daily mommy life. One of the ways to work on that was to get outside more and spend time with the family doing fun things. We started it off with a hike at Point Lobos. We haven’t been there since last summer so we were due for a visit.

If you visit the Monterey Peninsula, you simply must come visit it here. It is breathtaking. We like to park in the picnic area parking lot and then follow the trail to our favorite scenic spot…

…which you can see once you get to the top of this hill. You can see the tiny people at the very top. (I took the previous photo at the top of that hill.)

We spotted some lounging harbor seals on the way up.

Then once you get to the top, you keep going a bit until you reach the other side of the hill and you look down at this. The colors are gorgeous. One day we will then hike down to the sandy beach below but there isn’t a designated trail that way so it is a bit hard with all the kids.

The hike would seem a lot harder but it was easy enough for all the kids (and this out of shape mama) to handle. If you continue along the trail you can go to the another section of forest.

{happy}

“Because I’m happy…Clap along if you know what happiness is to you…”

How can I not be happy looking at these smiling faces. πŸ™‚

{funny}

I think the kids’ favorite moment was spotting this little guy. πŸ˜‰

{real}

Matthew has been on a superhero kick, wearing his Thor cape and Spiderman shirt for days. (I have to secretly wash them while he sleeps.)

Shopping with his mama.

Scoring a free banana and kids cliff bar snack at Whole Foods from a child friendly cashier. (I was a little shocked. It’s usually the pooches that get the royal treatment around here.)Β  πŸ˜‰

And finally….

I’m linking up this photo with Theme Thursday: Answer

The answer to where a superhero gets his real power…humbling himself before the Lord. πŸ˜‰

Thanks to Cari and LMLD for hosting! πŸ™‚
