Moments of Gratitude…

Today I am especially thankful for

  • The extra long holiday weekend that doesn’t seem to be going too fast (like it usually does.)
  • At home date nights.
  • A pen pal letter in the mailbox. (Remember those??)
  • A cool breeze to counteract the humidity.
  • When a certain tween comes up and hugs me for no particular reason.

Beauty in the Ordinary…

A smile to a stranger that is reciprocated.

In the Kitchen…

M – Italian turkey patty, broccoli and homemade Mac and cheese (made with low fat smoked Dutch cheese. Yum)

T – Slow cooker BBQ chicken, baked potato, veggies & salad. (I use my high tech recipe – Place chicken in slow cooker. Pour your fave BBQ sauce over it. Cook until done. Viola. ;-))

W – Grilled ham & cheese and homemade minestrone soup.

Th – Chef salad topped left leftover BBQ chicken.

F – Leftovers

S – Pizza night with Greek salad. (Note to self – post the recipe to fave Greek dressing next week.)

S – (My mother-in-law’s birthday dinner) Enchilada Lasagna, homemade refried beans, green beans and salad.

Praying…

  • That my stuffy head clears up and that I’m not getting sick.
  • For our new pastor and our previous pastor that they are both blessed in their new parishes.
  • For my kids and their new teachers and all their classmates.
  • For those suffering from heart ache, depression or addiction.
  • For some special intentions.

Pondering…

For me, January 1st has never been my New Year’s resolution day. It’s September 1st. After three months of summer play and lax schedules it’s nice to get back into a regular routine. After the kids go back to school I always go into “nesting” mode and want to clean up the clutter and get back on track with organizing and cleaning. I have a renewed fervor in the kitchen, trying different recipes and working hard to balance the budget. I have to seize those feelings and make the most of them while they are still strong!

Around the house…

This weekend I tackled my desk. This is a never ending chore because it collects clutter like crazy. Plus it also serves as my work space for small crafts so I had to get a handle on all the pens, craft scissors, washi tape etc. I rearranged and used a different organizing bin and things are so much nicer. Funny how a little order can bring inner peace. (Physically and spiritually!) I’ll blog about the updated desk soon. 🙂

Reading…

Past Suspicion by Therese Heckenkamp

Living Life Abundantly: Stories of People Who Encountered God by Johnnette Benkovic

Listening to…

Sweet quiet, except for few twittering birds. (I’m alone at the moment.)

On my DVR…

The Great Food Truck Race, Masterpiece’s Silk, Duck Dynasty, Season 3 of Big Bang Theory, 1950’s Father of the Bride with Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy and 1943’s Shadow of A Doubt with Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright. (One of my top 5 Hitchcock movies.)

On the blog…

I’m just trying to finish this post before I worry about beyond today. 😉

Posts I’ve Liked on my Bloglovin

I’m behind on my blog reading but I had to fave Jen’s post –

  • I also loved the article on Catholic Mom.com called The Duty of the Moment. I loved the opening quote: “Doing the duty of the moment means focusing our whole person – heart, soul, body, emotions, intellect, memory, imagination – on the job at hand!  The duty of the moment done for God is glamorous, exciting, wondrous…..” Catherine Doherty, Grace In Every Season.

Changing stinky diapers and washing loads of laundry it anything but glamorous but it is beautiful that each of us – whether we are single, have a house full of little ones or are sending our kids to college – are all called to perform our duties of the moment for love of God and love of those we are serving.

Pinned…

As you can see, I was on Pinterest this afternoon. Lots of pins today. The first three pins were taken directly from A Bowl Full of Lemon’s Meal Plan. They all looked delicious.

Plans for the Week…

A few school meetings, appointments, a birthday dinner for my mother-in-law, possible Catholic moms’ meeting and maybe a real date out with Brian if our sitter is available. 🙂

Captured…

I’m linking this photo with Ute at Flowers Round the Cross. Once a month she posts a scripture verse then asks bloggers to post a photo that captured that Scripture. Here is this month’s verse.

For thus the LORD said to me: “I will quietly look from my dwelling like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” Isiah 18:4

We’ve been having really weird weather. It will be warm and humid one day then grey and foggy the next. Last week after an unusual hot spell, a day finally came when the fog was so thick it was drizzling and covered everything in a blanket of water. The first thing I sought out were the cobwebs in the front yard because the water droplets look amazing on them. So although I already posted a photo similar to this one some time ago, I couldn’t help taking another.

Theme Thursday: Shadow & {pretty, happy, funny, real} vol 74: Bubble Play

It’s another photo mash-up today as I link up with Like Mother, Like Daughter for {pretty, happy, funny, real} and with Cari for Theme Thursday: Shadow . (Check out {real} for that one. :-))

The fog finally stayed out over  the ocean and we were rewarded with a gorgeous, sunny day. The kids were enjoying the simple pleasure of bubble blowing. 🙂

{pretty}

I love snapping photos as the bubbles are being blown. This one with Bella is my FAVORITE! (No filters used.)

One bubble blew away and the second popped.

I think the background greenery is pretty too. 🙂

{happy}

Happy smiles.

Matthew is John-Paul’s shadow. JP’s goofiness is rewarded with endless giggles.

Bella’s happy “me time” is riding on her scooter with some tunes.

{funny}

Brian is trying to show Matthew how to blow a bubble.

The only thing Matthew manages to blow are raspberries.

{real}

A shadow of Andrew catching a bubble on his bubble wand.

Shadows of Andrew with John-Paul swinging his bubble wand like a tennis racket trying to pop the bubbles.

It was a fun day. 🙂 Thanks to Cari and LMLD for hosting!

{pretty, happy, funny, real} vol 73 & Theme Thursday: Faith

It’s another photo mash-up today as I link up with Like Mother, Like Daughter with {pretty, happy, funny, real} and with Cari for Theme Thursday: Faith . (Check out {pretty} for that one. :-))

On November 24, 2013, it will be the 300th anniversary of Junipero Serra’s birth. That’s why lately I have been thinking about the incredible faith of Fr. Serra. When he started his daunting task to found the missions in California, he was older and in poor health. He had a bad leg, and other ailments, yet he managed to walk hundreds of miles at a time and traveled over 24,000 miles in his lifetime. He established 9 of the 21 missions and worked tirelessly to fulfill his vocation and calling in life. I am sure there were moments when he was ready to give up or collapse but his motto was to never look back and always move forward. I need more of that kind of faith in my life!

The altar of the Carmel Mission. In the bottom left hand corner you can see his icon and where Fr. Serra is buried.

The Junipero Serra Prayer Garden outside the Mission.

An interesting fact from the Cornerstone Newsletter I just received in the mail today: “This Basilica is one of the only three mission churches built of stone. The others are build with adobe brick. When restoring the Basilica walls, small sections were not plastered over in order to provide ‘windows’ to display the Basilica’s previously hidden and wonderful stone work. Each wall tells a different story of over two centuries of construction and repair.” See, you learn something new every day. 🙂

{happy}

Today I was soooo happy that we had a few hours of blue skies and temps in the high 60’s because over the weekend the fog was getting oppressive.

{funny}

The boys pulled out their old Halloween costumes and were having a super hero weekend. (I like how Spidey is making sure Thor doesn’t run away. ;-))

{real}

This weekend is the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, which means there are some amazing cars driving around the Peninsula. There was a charity fundraiser at the Mission and a Blessing of the Automobiles that “combined the passion of fine automobiles with the faith.” We didn’t attend but when we went to evening Mass for the feast of the Assumption I snapped these photos before Brian started yelling at me to get into the church. (Well, he doesn’t really yell. His look and head shake speaks volumes though. But he knows me well enough to know you can’t stop the mamarazzi in me. ;-))

Thanks to LMLD and Cari for hosting. 🙂

{pretty, happy, funny, real} vol 72 & Theme Thursday: Statues

It’s another photo mash-up today as I link up with Like Mother, Like Daughter with {pretty, happy, funny, real} and with Cari for Theme Thursday: Statues . (Check out {pretty} for that one. :-))

{pretty}

The altar at the Carmel Mission has numerous statues, all which have been recently cleaned and restored.

A sweet friend gave me this statue when I was pregnant with John-Paul. Since then I have kept it on our home altar as a reminder to keep in prayer all the pregnant mamas out there (and for the spiritual mamas who nurture God’s children.)

{happy}

I love how kids can find the simplest things to keep them amused. Here Andrew is proudly sporting his mustache.

John-Paul started off happy but then he got upset that his ‘stache wouldn’t stay on his face. 😉

{funny}

John-Paul is definitely a chip of the old block. Like his father, he always has a book in his hands. The other day I told him he had to go outside and get some fresh air. I thought he’d ride bikes with his brothers but instead he sat on the floor and read his book. I guess, technically, he did do as he was told. 😉

{real}

I was getting tired of all my boys sporting messy 70’s hair so I gave them all haircuts. Remember my little guy from last week?

Well, he got his first short big boy haircut.

He was very proud of his “After” look. 🙂

***

This is a last minute add-on photo.

My statue from the {pretty} photo was the victim of boyhood exuberance. sigh. Having kids definitely teaches you how to have a healthy detachment from material possessions. Luckily some crazy glue repaired our ladies, even though they still have a few war wounds. Oh well. (And if you think I sound a little too calm it’s because I already blew my top and cooled off before typing this. ;-))

7 Quick Takes (8/3/13): OJ Baths, Penpals & Catholic Posts

~ 1 ~

I’m linking up with Jen for this week’s Saturday Morning Quick Takes. I wasn’t going to write a Quick Takes this week but I could use 30 minutes of destressing time so I’ll set the timer and punch out some really quick Quick Takes. Ready, Steady, Go!

~ 2 ~

I can tell it is going to be one of those mornings. I opened up a new orange juice and just as I was about to serve it I had to stop and help Matthew with something. Later I went back to the orange juice and without thinking gave the container a good shake…with the cap off. Yeah, so I had a nice orange juice bath and the counter top and everything on it got a lovely OJ spray. Everything else just went downhill from there.

~ 3 ~

It’s funny but as I was going through a particularly difficult moment yesterday, you know when you are feeling like you going to lose your mommy mind, and I thought about an email I just wrote to another mom and sharing how all these little mommy crosses we have to carry is the road to our sanctification. As I was stomping around the house mad at something I kept repeating to myself, “This is my road to sanctification, this is my road to sanctification…” Funny that it is a lot easier to offer this advice to someone else rather than to actually live it yourself! Luckily my harried moment ended and all was good again. 😉

~ 4 ~

I was reading a post from Call Her Happy which led me to the blog The Big White Farmhouse. Ashely of BWF has this cool blog with a homey feel that makes you want to be a better homemaker. She is also a lover of old school mail and has set up the Pen Pal Cirlces where participants are grouped together with 3 other moms and you exchange letters with each other. Real letters – stationary, stamps, an envelope in the mailbox that is not a bill or junk mail. Swoon! I signed up and if you are interested go over and sign up too! The form will be online until Aug 4. After that you can just email Ashely directly and join. 🙂  Fun!

~ 5 ~

I was looking at my calendar and it said that it is now August. Is that possible?? The kids will be back in school in a couple weeks and this month I will turn another year older. Ugh. (Let’s not think about that. The OJ bath was enough fun for one day.) Well, a new month means the Holy Father has new prayer intentions for us to focus on during August.

GENERAL INTENTION: That parents and teachers may help the new generation to grow in upright conscience and life.

MISSION INTENTION: That the local Church in Africa, faithfully proclaiming the Gospel, may promote peace and justice.

Today is also the First Saturday of the month so it is time for Convert Journal’s New Evangelist Monthly.

This is an informal, dynamic, crowd-sourced “meta-magazine” showcasing the best posts faithful Catholic bloggers publish each month. Here you will find many different, but faithfully Catholic viewpoints, insights and perspectives.

You can link up your favorite post of last month. It can be about the faith, family life, motherhood, whatever. The main thing is for it to be from a Catholic perspective. This month I linked my conversion story My Journey to God. If you are a Catholic blogger, add your best/favorite post too! 🙂

Okay, my time is up so I better say good bye. Have a great weekend. I’ll leave you with a recent photo I took. (The photo challenge theme was “wildlife.” I think a bee could be considered wild. ;-))
