7 Quick Takes (9/6/13): Prayer, Discipline and Foyle’s War

I’m linking up with Jen today for 7 Quick Takes. šŸ™‚

~ 1 ~

Pray for Peace – You’ve most likely seen these already but in case you haven’t, I’m posting it here. The Holy Father has called for a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria. It is on Saturday, September 7. I think I will fast from my phone/computer/camera. Hopefully I can make it 24 hours. šŸ˜‰ But seriously, whatever level you can do, we should all be joining in!

~ 2 ~

Prayer Request – Speaking of prayer, please say a prayer for my little guy Matthew. He has an issue with his legs – he is pigeon toed and has relatively severe bow legs. His tibula bone (particularly on his left leg is facing outward instead of forward. Usually in time, it will rotate but he is going to be 2 1/2 and it is still pretty bad. So now we need to take him to a pediatric orthopedic up in Stanford (about 2 hours north of us) to get an evaluation done. We are hoping he will not need surgery. So an extra prayer for my little guy is much appreciated!!

~ 3 ~

Quiet time – Speaking of Matthew, with Bella and Andrew back in school and John-Paul going three days out of the week for a few hours, Matthew and I have more time alone together. After dropping JP off at preschool we’ll often go make a visit to the Chapel. It’s good for him and definitely good for me. Sometimes I get so busy with day to day living I forget to just stop, quiet myself and be in the presence of Our Lord. Amazingly, Matthew is quiet and just sits/kneels with me patiently. Quite the opposite of how he acts with his brothers at Sunday Mass!

~~ 4 ~~

Slackers Unite – Along with spending a little more time in quiet before God, I could also use a reboot in the discipline department. That is why I was intrigued when I read Jen’s post about doing an online book discussion of the e-bookĀ  21 Days to a More Disciplined Life. I clicked over and read the intro of the book, not expecting much. Then I read this section:

Who is this book for?

  • You have trouble following through.
  • You get overwhelmed by huge projects.
  • You start strong, but your passion fizzles out.
  • You are super-disciplined in a few areas of your life, but you have one or two pet areas that you just canā€™t get under control.
  • You check out 10 different books on discipline and organization from the library, but return all of them late.

The last one had me laughing out loud. Yeah, that is so me. This summer I was in super slacker mode and as I mentioned on Monday, September 1st is my Jan 1. My drive to improve my problem areas is strongest right now. I pulled out my planner and got back into using it (cuz if I don’t write it down, I don’t remember it!) and I am ready to work on a little discipline that doesn’t burn out in a day or two. I downloaded the e-book and will be joining in the discussion. If you are interested, join us!

Bday Wishes – Bella’s birthday is coming at the end of the month. She is going to be 12! She loves the music from the Broadway musical “Newsies” so I thought I would give her a Newsies themed party. The poster is my base. Colors could be black, white and red. Any other suggestions??

~ 6 ~

Foyle’s War – Are you a Foyle’s War fan? Brian and I have been watching Foyle’s War of PBS for years and were ecstatic when the show was coming out of retirement and picking up where it left off. Season 7 starts on Sunday, Sept 15 on PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery. If you’ve never watched it before and like period dramas or mysteries, you should check it out on Netflix.

~ 7 ~

Okay, it is an hour past my bed time (and you wonder why I need a book on discipline) and I can barely keep my eyes open so I better stop here. Have a great Friday!

UPDATE: At midnight last night I could not remember what the #7 Take was supposed to be. Now in the light of morning, I remember!

I wanted to join Suscipio in their 3-2-1 Fantastically Fun Friday Link-up without the link-up! Whether you are a blogger or a non-blogger, just answer the 3 questions in their comment box. This week Angela is hosting.Ā  Here is my contribution:

3 Things I’m Thankful For
~ When my little guy hugs me from behind and says, “I wub you, mama.” Swoon.
~ For the upcoming weekend and having everyone home.
~ For packages in the mail with sweet surprises.

2 Things in My Purse That Don’t Need to Be There
~ A 1/2 of string cheese that’s hard as a rock
~ A roll of scotch tape. (My 4 year old would disagree. He is always accidentally tearing a page in one of the books he’s always carrying around. He likes me to fix it immediately, not when we get home. šŸ˜‰

1 Thing I Love, Love, Love to Eat
~ It’s a tie between a BBQ Turkey Burger or Taco Salad. Yum.

Thanks for hosting, Angela!

Okay, now you can have a great weekend. šŸ˜‰

Five Favorites: British Entertainment Edition

I have to admit that I am a bit of a nerd and I was loving catching up with the comic con news and seeing various video clips. I donā€™t think Iā€™d actually dress up in character, unless it was something like Michonne with my zombie slaying sword. That would be cool if you donā€™t mind a short, chubby Mexican version. Brian would want to carry a weapon too but since he is more likely to be holding a book than a sword maybe a Sheldon costume would be more appropriate. šŸ˜‰

When I am not geeking out over things like that I am loving/obsessing over British entertainment such as these.

~ 1 ~

Downton Abbey

There seems to be two categories regarding the BBC/Masterpiece shows Downton Abbey. You either love it or you donā€™t get what all the fuss is about. I am definitely a love it. If you are too, youā€™ll also love these.

I havenā€™t done a Season 4 update since this post but have you seen the new stills from Season 4? Here are a few.

It breaks my heart a little to see Mary and Tom without their better halves.

I’m loving this photo.

Edith is looking sultry.

Oh dear, is this why?

Rose and her current beau.

Jane Austen & Outdoor Movie Nights

Jane Austen is my favorite author (along with Charlotte Bronte) and I love watching all the many adaptations of her stories. I still enjoy watching the old Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet and was excited to see it was one of the summer movies offered at our local ā€œTheater in the Forest.ā€ It is an outdoor theater nestled in a foresty area of downtown Carmel. A couple of my mom friends brought their daughters and together we got cozy under blankets, sipped hot chocolate and passed the popcorn as we watched the movie. It was Bellaā€™s first Jane Austen movie and I was sooo happy to share it with her. šŸ™‚

~ 3 ~
Masterpiece Mystery

Brian and I are also big fans of BBC/Masterpiece Mystery, although some of the stories can be a little grittier for the sensitive viewer. Our fave, hands down, is Sherlock Holmes. Iā€™ve enjoyed Benedict Cumberbatch in previous movies but didnā€™t become a fangirl until Sherlock.

Then seeing him as Kahn in Star Trek pretty much sealed the deal.

Hereā€™s a video of Freeman and Cumberbatch with a video message to Comic Con participants.

Watch Sherlockā€™s Martin Freeman & Benedict Cumberbatch; Comic-Con on PBS. See more from Masterpiece.

~ 4 ~

English Actors & The Hobbit

When the Hobbit came out I was pleased that Richard Armitage was to play Thorin since I loved him in North & South. I was equally excited when Martin Freeman/Dr. Watson played Bilbo in the Hobbit. Now Freeman will be reunited with his partner Cumberbatch/Sherlock in the sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the dragon Smaug. Although his physical likeness doesnā€™t appear, his voice and body movements are used in a similar way as his co-star Andy Serkisā€™ were used for Gollum. I canā€™t wait for that one!

~ 5 ~
Peppa Pig

Our British love is rubbing off on the kids because they adore the cartoon Peppa Pig. It cracks me up they can go from having a Star Wars light saber battle to discussing having tea and biscuits during their summer holiday. Yesterday John-Paul was playing store with me and he handed me a coin saying, ā€œHere is one pound, Mummy.ā€ Maybe one day he can teach me the metric system. šŸ˜‰

7 Quick Takes (7/26/13): Patron Saints, Catholic Fiction & The Walking Dead

~ 1 ~

This is Day 5 of Jen’s 7 Posts in 7 Days Challenge. I am also linking to her weekly 7 Quick Takes. šŸ™‚

~ 2 ~

Happy feast of St. Anne and St. Joachim! St. Anne is my patron saint and my name sake (Bobbi-Ann) so this day has always been a special feast day for me, especially when I was single. St. Anne and Blessed Anne Maria Taigi were the two I asked to intercede for me in finding a holy husband. They did an excellent job. šŸ˜‰

~ 3 ~

Speaking of St. Anne finding me a man, Grace shared her how-we-met story and put a link-up for people to share their stories as well. My sister posted hers and it is so sweet. E & V are a perfect match! I feel like I have told my how-we-met story so many times that I am like this…

and you’re like this…

But on the off chance that you haven’t read it yet, here’s the link. šŸ˜‰

~ 4 ~

Brian was telling me about a website that he loves – Catholic Fiction.net. It is a great source for finding out about Catholic novels and since he reads all the time, he is always going through various Catholic fiction books. If only I could get him to do some reviews! Anyway, I was excited to see one of the books I am reading right now featured on there. It is Mysterious Albion (Vatican Vampire Hunters.) So far I am loving it. If I get it done in time I’ll review it for next week’s “What We’re Reading Wednesday” hosted by Jessica.

~ 5 ~

I’ve added Comment Luv to the blog so if you are a blogger and you leave a comment please add your blog link. When you do your latest blog post link will show up under your name. That way I (and others) can visit your blog as well. I especially love to visit the blogs of new visitors. šŸ™‚ Once you’ve typed in your link the first time, it should automatically come up when you visit again.

~ 6 ~

I don’t watch Brittan’s Got Talent but a friend had this clip on her Facebook page and I watched it. Ohmygoodness, it actually brought tears to my eyes. So beautiful! It is worth the watch.

Ā ~ 7~

Here are two other videos if you are a Walking Dead fan. I binged all week and finally finished season 3 so I’ve got zombies on the brain. The first is the hilarious Walking Dead Bad Lip Reading Video. (Note – Only watch this is you are already a WD fan. Otherwise, skip it.) La-Bibbida-Bibba-Dum šŸ˜‰

The second is calledĀ  Zombie Story: A Mind Blowing Comparison of Toy Story and the Walking Dead. Pretty funny… and coincidental?

Have a great Friday! Thanks to Jen for hosting! šŸ™‚

7 Quick Takes (12/28/12): Anniversary, Romance & Duck Dynasty

Hosted by Jen.

~~ 1 ~~

Mawage is wot bwings us togeder today ā€“ A great big happy 13th anniversary to my sweetheart! It may be a clichĆ© but it feels like it was just yesterday, yet I feel like Iā€™ve known Brian all my life. Maybe because he was an answer to my prayers long before I knew him.

Ā

~~ 2~~

Now you are my Mr Knightly – Itā€™s funny that when I was single and still living at home, I remember watching love stories with my sister and weā€™d love it but laugh and yell, ā€œFake!ā€ at the screen. This was in the mid to late 90ā€™s when all the amazing Jane Austen adaptations came out such as the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion etc. All those tender love scenes were simply the dreams of fairy talesā€¦until I met Brian.

I distinctly remember one scene in Emma (with Gwenyth Palthrow) when Mr. Knightly professed his love to Emma as the music swelled and small flower blossoms fell from the tree. It was picture perfect.

I think back to the first weekend Brian and I finally spent together. (We met online and corresponded for 5 months before meeting in person. By then I already knew I was going to marry him.) There was one point when we attended a Marian Conference and during the lunch break we found a grassy area under a tree to have a picnic. Suddenly, a nearby building turned on their sound system and classical music stared playing in the background. Then a breeze rustled through the tree and small flower blossoms started falling from the sky as Brian turned to me and gave me that ā€œlook of loveā€ that said he wanted nothing more than to kiss me. Part of me was reeling and the other part of me was inwardly yelling, ā€œFake!ā€ Stuff like this does not happen in real life. (If you want the whole story of how we met, you can read it here.)

Well, it was real and 13 years later we have far too few moments lounging under a blossom tree but heā€™ll still get that ā€œlookā€ when he has to steal a kiss. So the fairy tale lives on, you just have to look and listen a little harder with all the family chaos surrounding it. šŸ˜‰ Here’s proof. I still find love notes left for me. Swoon.

Ā ~~ 3 ~~

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (and his coffee cup) – Speaking of Brian, for Christmas I made him one of those baskets I talked about in my Gift Ideas for Guys. It was all his favorites things to have a relaxing afternoon. Along with books, a blank journal and treats, I added a new coffee mug and coffee. He loved them! We have long been supporters of Mystic Monk Coffee but bought it less once we switched to the Keurig single cup coffee maker. But Iā€™m happy to see that Mystic Monk now carries the single serving K-cups. (Which are also compatible with other single serving machines.) Ā Brian loved the Mystic Monk blend and I will buy more of the other flavors. (Note: I think they sold out of the Mysitc Monk blend but hopefully more will be available soon. They do have other flavors ready.)

Ā “Monk Shot” single serving coffee

Here is the mug I bought him.

~~ 4 ~~

Are you seriously watching this? – Okay, here is another speaking of Brian story. The other day Brian was up late and I could hear him laughing at something on TV. Usually when he is watching TV it is either on EWTN or the NFL channel so I wasnā€™t sure what would be so funny. I go into the family room and he is laughing hysterically and I saw these guys on the screen.

Yes, it is the millionaire ā€œrednecksā€ of Duck Dynasty. At first I could not believe Brian would be watching a show like this but he convinced me to sit down for a minute and soon I was laughing so hard I was crying. Granted that is not hard to make me do but still these guys are so over the top itā€™s hilarious. Hereā€™s a little taste of an episode we recently watched.

~~ 5 ~~

And this one is fuzzy but Si as a scary Christmas elf is a classic.

~~ 6 ~~

I need rehab – Okay, I am sitting here staring at the screen wondering what to write next. I usually jot down ideas for QT on my iphone notes but one of the boys has confiscated my phone to play Star Wars Angry Birds and as he sits here quietly at my feet, I canā€™t bear to disturb him. I also jot down ideas in my planner but since Christmas my desk has slowly relapsed into a candidate for a hoarders reality show and my planner if buried under a pile. Like an alcoholic who fell off the wagon, I have fallen off the organizational wagon and if these piles on my desk get any higher, I wonā€™t be able to see the computer screen. You think Iā€™m joking? My kiddo just returned my phone. Iā€™ll snap a pic.

Yesterday the blog Iā€™m An Organizing Junkie posted Introducing the New Yearā€™s Organizing Revolution!! So maybe I should check it out and get back on track. It takes a while to build up but I have that ā€œIā€™ve got to clean this mess or Iā€™m gonna screamā€ feeling right now and I have to seize it before it fades away. So letā€™s wrap this up.

~~ 7 ~~

Anne with an E – Did you notice the angry bird calendar in the above photo? My sis BC bought that for the boys to hang in their bedroom. This week we had the pleasure of watching the Star Wars trilogy for the first time with them. (I fast forwarded a bit of the scarier parts) but they loved it. John-Paul is amazed that they made three movies about one phone app. Every time he came into the room and saw Darth Vader on the screen he yelled, ā€œItā€™s Angry Bird pig!ā€ Ā LOL.

The next movie I want to watch for the first time with my kids is actually a movie for Bella and me. She just read Anne of Green Gables so I thought sheā€™d enjoy watching the movie with me. Can you believe itā€™s been over 25 years since that movie came out?! Am I really that old?? Never mind. Donā€™t answer that.

Have a wonderful last weekend of 2012!!

The Next Iron Chef 2011

Are you ready for some cooking drama?? Good because tonight starts The Next Iron Chef 4. This is the first year that I actually know (almost) all the chefs.

Also, a bit of trivia that I just learned from a friend, last year’s Iron Chef winner Marc Forgione is the great-great-great nephew of Francesco Forgione, otherwise known as Padre Pio. Very cool.
Happy watching! And let me know who you’re rooting for!
