September/October 2016 Goals (and Summer Goals Reviewed)

RevolutionofLove.com - sept_oct_goalsWhen I was outside this morning there was a nip in the air, the wind was blowing and some leaves were starting to turn. It definitely feels like fall is approaching. I love this time of year to start fresh, even more so than January 1st. After the more care-free days of summer, it is time to get back on track and into school mode. That means it’s time for my Autumn Goals.

However, before we dive in I’ll review my summer goals. When I made them back in June, I knew there was a good chance a lot of it would not get done simply because it was, well, summer.

I was partially right. Some goals were completely ignored but some were accomplished so I’m chalking that up as a win. πŸ˜‰

RevolutionofLove.com - Nov/Dec Goals 2015 (goals_nov_dec_1)My main goals do not change but my mini-goals change depending on the two month interval and what projects I want to complete. So here is a summary of my progress and my mini goals for Sept/Oct 2016.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_daughterMain Goal #1: To always have God at the center of my life and to deepen my love for Him. I want his will to be my will and motivation.

Summer Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • 15 minutes of morning prayer.Ohmygosh, I forgot how hard it was to pray with all the kids in the house. It required me getting up earlier than the boys but waking up early in summer seemed unnatural. πŸ˜‰ Instead I tried to fit in prayer in the later morning after they were fed and playing on their own. Frankly it was hit and miss. Now that they are back in school I can resume my normal morning prayer time.
  • Short exam and Act of Contrition at end of the day.Again, hit and miss. Some days I did well but there were more days when I was praying and fell asleep. I don’t think praying in the horizontal position works for me!
  • Monthly confession. – Done and done.

Sept/Oct Mini-Goals

  • 15 minutes morning prayer – I’m going to keep working at it.
  • Short exam and Act of Contrition at end of the day. – Continued goal. This time I’m going to do this before I get into bed.
  • Add some spiritual reading to my week. – I have been reading a lot this summer and love a great novel but I have a huge stack of books by amazing Catholic women that would help me to grow spiritually. These books need my attention! (I’ll make a separate post about this stack of books.)

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_wifeMain Goal #2: To be a loving and holy wife to Brian and to work at keeping our marriage strong, to nurture our friendship and spend time alone to reconnect.

Summer Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Coordinate schedules and plan date outing with Brian for June, July and August. – Accomplished.
  • Daily act of kindness for Brian. – Hmm…this was so-so. One thing I noticed is that over the summer I often skipped my nightly bullet journal review, which included reviewing my goals for the day. Not refreshing my memory each night of what I was working on often meant completely forgetting all about it. As a result, weeks would go by before I realized I was no longer being intentional about my treatment of Brian.
  • Treat Brian like my husband and not my 5th kid.For the most part, I think I was better but could still use more practice!Β

Sept/Oct Mini-Goals

  • Daily act of kindness for Brian. – I want to keep up this practice until it becomes second nature. (Do you want to work on this with me? I have suggestions in this post – 25 Acts of Kindness for your Husband.)
  • Praise Brian in front of the kids. – I am finding this especially important now that Bella is older and watches more closely how Brian and I interact with each other. I don’t want her to think it is normal for a wife to be bossy and treat her husband as less capable. Brian and I will often playfully tease each other but I don’t want it to come off as disrespectful or demeaning. My playful teasing has to be balanced with words of praise and thankfulness towards Brian. And if the teasing sounds snarky then its best that I just shut up.
  • Encourage Brian to talk more while respecting the fact that he’s more quiet. – Brian is not a chit chatter and if I ask about his day I’ll often get a “fine” answer. Instead of rolling my eyes or complaining that I never get any details, I can ask a few questions about specific things to encourage him to tell me a little more. Then I’ll listen to what he says and remember things that are coming up to ask about it more in the future. I’ve started doing this and although he won’t go into a monologue any time soon, he has shared more, which has been good for both of us.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_motherMain Goal #3: To be a good mother that loves her kids and spends time with them and is not always “too busy.” I want to teach them about their faith and how to love and serve God in their young lives.

Summer Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Have “no screens allowed” blocks of time during the day to make sure the kids (and mom) aren’t plugged in all summer. We did fairly well, although there were some exceptionally crazy days when I allowed more Netflix than normal.
  • Spend more time with the kids outside. To be honest, this summer I helped Brian with some bookkeeping work for my inlaws and more often than not, I sent the kids out to play without me.
  • Let the kids work on the scrapbooks and photo albums sitting in the closet.Yeah, this project had to be shelved.

Sept/Oct Mini-Goals

  • Return to family night prayers including a decade of the rosary. It was hit and miss during the summer months. We need our family prayer time.
  • Use my free morning time to get all my work done so I can spend one-on-one time with the kids during homework time in the afternoon. No computer/phone use in the afternoon. – The helping kids with homework and getting dinner on the table part of the day is the most stressful for me. (Or maybe tied with getting us out the door on time.) All my attention has to be on these tasks at hand without distractions.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_homemakerMain Goal #4: To bring order into our home so I am not stressed out by the mess and chaos. When things are organized our family life runs smoother and there is more peace.

Summer Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Make a reference meal list. – Started but not completed.
  • Put all my printed recipes into a binder for easy reference.Β  Started but not completed.
  • Continue A Bowl Full of Lemon’s 2016 Home Organization 101 Challenge.Β  – IΒ  actually did do a few things off my list as I am slowly trying to declutter and get rid of lot of our excess.Β
  • Pull out the Tahoe Trip binder and update any info for this year’s trip. – Done! πŸ™‚

Sept/Oct Mini-Goals

  • Finish my reference meal list.
  • Make weekly meal plan. – Plan my weekly meals according to my schedule and make more use of my slow cooker, especially on the afternoons when we are booked with after school activities and speech therapy.
  • Declutter boys’ room. – Finish boxing up the boys’ old toys, ask local friends if they want any of them, bring the rest to Salvation Army.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_womanMain Goal #5 – To take care of myself physically, spiritually and mentally so I can be a happy and healthy wife, mother and friend. Taking care of myself mentally also means challenging myself to come out of my comfort zone and facing my fears and trying new things.

Summer Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Do a little something creative every day. – Maybe 50/50.
  • Continue basics – water, vitamins and start the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge. – I did well and I completed my walking challenge – 100 miles in 100 days!! woohoo! I’ll write more about this in a separate post.
  • Schedule a girls’ night out with the IRL friends I haven’t seen in ages! – I did get together with old friends once this summer but I need to make it more often!

Sept/Oct Mini-Goals

  • Continue with the basics – water, vitamins, walk and sleep. – The hardest part right now is getting out of late-summer-night mode. I am not a morning person and having to get up early and get all the kids out of the house in time for school means that I need to get to bed earlier or I am a cranky, crazed zombie. So shooting for 7 hours of sleep is my goal. I’ll have to adjust my bedtime accordingly.
  • Use my bullet journal daily. – Over the summer I was much more relaxed about using my bullet journal and didn’t need the intense To Do lists and schedules. But summer is over and my September (and soon October) calendar is packed so more than ever I need to stay on top of things! I live by the motto “write it down right now” or else it goes in one ear and out the other. I must do my daily review of my bullet journal to check over my schedule, figure out where I need to be and what items must be completed that day. Nightly reviews of my bullet journal and keeping it updated play a vital role in keeping things together. My goal is to keep using it and referring to it as needed.
  • Spend one-on-one time with local friends. – I feel like lately God has been placing on my path friends who need a listening ear and a hug. As women, it is important that we have human connection with other women, whether it is to laugh or cry together. A part of me loves that and longs for that connection but the introverted part of me sometimes takes over and I just want to stay home and watch a movie. LOL. I want t make sure I am being a good friend and giving of myself to others when I can. Sometimes family life stops me but in this stage of life I do have a little more flexibility to be hospitable to my friends. So I want to work on spending time with friends (old and new) and hopefully hosting another Blessed Brunch before the end of the year. πŸ™‚

Sisters Speak in the #BISsisterhood at Blessed Is She.net

bissisterhood_1_500

Each week Blessed Is She features one of the team members for Sister Speak. This week it was my turn to answer questions such as who is my favorite saint, what virtue am I working on, what is my biggest struggle, what keeps me Catholic, what is my favorite motto and what prayer is on my heart. Here is a snippet:

Do you have a special Saint that you feel a strong connection to? How so?

When I was younger I had a love and devotion of St. Anne. She was my patron saint and I shared her name. (My middle name.) I prayed to her often, especially when I was looking for a holy spouse and later when I was dealing with fertility problems. However, another saint has made her way into my heart these last few years — St. Martha. The busyness of motherhood and my natural tendencies helps me to identify with Martha who was busy and worried about many things. I find myself turning to her often for guidance.

Which virtue do you find yourself working on the most throughout your day?

Patience and acceptance of God’s will. Throughout the day there are numerous times when things don’t go the way I want them to go — someone spills juice all over the table, the washing machine breaks down, a driver cuts me off on the road or a project deadline is moved up. There is always something. My first instinct is the flare up and get mad or frustrated. I am trying to learn how to calm down, be patient and accept that little crosses are a part of life. More importantly, God uses these crosses to help me grow in virtue and they can be prayer opportunities to “offer it up” for the special intentions of loved ones and the world at large.

READ THE REST HERE.

I am honored to be a part of this ministry! To find out more, visit Blessed Is She.net.

Also, please keep the Blessed Is She team in your prayers. We are meeting in Wisconsin this weekend for a retreat/conference/get-together. Thanks to my wonderful husband, I will be attending. Yay! The last time I went on a plane by myself was literally 10 years and three babies ago.

Please pray for all our safe travels and (for those of us who are married) please pray for the sanity of our hubbies and for unbelievable calm in the kiddos we leave behind.

I’ll be posting about the trip on Instagram and you can follow the team using the hashtagΒ #bisteamretreat. I’ll share more about it when I get back. πŸ™‚

Online Daybook & #7QT (8/15/16): A Call to Love, High School Ventures and Current Faves

Happy feast of the Assumption! I have been on a blogging break but I’ve popped in to catch you up on the latest. Enjoy. πŸ™‚

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • That the last two days have been smoke free and that the local fire is now 60% contained.
  • A productive weekend, even though I am tired from it.
  • A few moments to myself to write and catch my breath before the busy schedule takes over again.
  • Food on our table, warm beds to sleep in and family to love.
  • Another year of life.

Praying for..

  • My mom’s continued health.
  • Numerous friends who are carrying heavy crosses.
  • The Olympians.
  • Our nation.
  • Kids (and their teachers) as they return to school this month.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

It seems like lately God has been telling me over and over that I need to increase my love for those around me. In Saturday’s Blessed Is She devotion, Brigid talked about the anxiety her heart feelt over the turmoils of the world and she wondered how she could go from prayer to action. She said:

“I want to fill my heart up with love. I want to carry love with me as I move through the world. I want to respond in love to the people I meet. Sometimes the love will be a love of justice, to be sure, but I will move and live in love.”

Those words have stuck with me.

Then yesterday at Mass the visiting priest said:

“It’s our capacity to love that will bring others to Christ.”

It makes me think about the people God has placed in my hands – my husband, my children, my family, my friends, members of my community, even you as you read this. It is not mere chance that they are in my life and I in their lives. I have a role to play and a mission to fulfill. But that requires me let go of my instinct to be selfish. It means thinking of others and how my actions (or lack of action) affects them. It means taking a few extra minutes on my knees to pray for you or for a struggling friend or making a meal for a mom who is having a rough time. Or not losing it when one of my kids breaks something in the house again. It means tuning off the phone and talking with my teen or reading to my sons. There are so many ways God wants me to share his love with others. I just have to decided if I will listen and act or turn a blind eye.

Around the House…

The house has been neglected these last few weeks because I have been helping Brian with a work project. All my free time has been going to helping him so besides the basics, the house will have to wait!

Family Chit Chat…

For those who were asking, my mom is doing well in her recovery. In fact, she asked to relay this message: “My mom wanted me to let you know that this week when the therapist/nurse checked her they said she was doing great and healing remarkably well. Mom told the therapist that she credits it to the power of prayer because there has been countless people praying for her recovery. The therapist said that he find those who have prayer in their life do heal faster. My Mom also wanted me to send a big thanks to you again for all your prayers and support. She was in tears telling me how much it has meant to her. So a big thanks!”

With that in mind, this month I have my pap smear and a mammogram scheduled. They are not the most pleasant experiences but a definite must for my health!

ba_brm_12_25_01W

In family news, my sweet little Bella started high school this week! High school!!Β  How did 14 years pass by so quickly!!!

RevolutionofLove.com - brm_hs_2016W

Taking care of the kids when they were babies and toddlers was its own kind of crazy stress but now I’ve entered into another kind of crazy mental stress, having mama-worry about Bella’s physical, emotional and spiritual well being! Sigh. I need a piece of chocolate. πŸ˜‰

RevolutionofLove.com - vbs_2016

The boys have been busy with swimming and attending their first VBS (Vacation Bible School) this month.

RevolutionofLove.com - ajpm_8_16

They had so much fun and I was so impressed with how well it was organized! We will definitely be attending (and volunteering to help) next year.

In other news, on Thursday it is my birthday! That is both bad – another year older – and good – another year of being alive! Brian wants to know what I want for my b-day but seriously, I have everything I want (well, unless you can instantly make me a few jean sizes smaller. Hmm… maybe I should pass on that chocolate.) πŸ˜‰ Seriously, in all the things that matter, I already have them. <3

Reading…

The Summer Before the War

I’ve read Section 2 of The Summer Before the War. The next podcast for the #pnsbookclub should be up soon over at Planned But Not Scripted. Their blog post for Part 1 is already up.

Persuasion

For fun I re-read Persuasion, my favorite Jane Austen book. πŸ™‚

Watching…

(ON TV)

tdy_sham_phelp_140424.today-inline-vid-featured-desktopPhoto credit

During the day I’ve been enjoying the Olympics with the boys. Matthew is particularly enamored with Micheal Phelps. I was touched to read Micheal’s story about his struggle with substance abuse, and feelings of no self esteem and no self worth to the point of thinking about suicide.Β  Thankfully, his friend, NFL star (and Christian) Ray Lewis stepped in and challenged Michael to re-evaluate his life and turn to God. Eventually Michael did and by the grace of God he was able to heal broken relationships and turn his life around. It’s such a powerful testimony to the fact that all these amazing successes mean nothing when your heart is lost. (You can read the whole story here.)

As I mentioned, Brian and I love British detective shows. Now that Inspector Lewis has started again, we are watching that.

We have two episodes left of The Tunnel until we find out of the killer is caught. (Parental note: Rated MA. Not for kids.)

— Brian and I finished the BBC mystery/thriller Thirteen about a young girl who escaped after 13 years of captivity. I really enjoyed the show but the ending seemed a little rushed and anti-climatic. (Parental note: Rated MA. Not for kids.)

— Meanwhile, I finished the BBC show The Crimson Field. I enjoyed it but there was no season two and that left a lot of questions unanswered. Boo.Β  It is available for free on Amazon Prime Video. (Parental note: Rated TV-14. Adult situations, language and non-sexual rear-end nudity.)

(AT THE MOVIES)

movie_collage

Some of the movies I’ve watched this summer.

The Conjuring 2 – I’m not usually a fan of horror movies but loved the first Conjuring and this one was scary good too. PG-13

Finding Dory – I’m not sure if I liked it as much as the first one but there were some cute and funny moments. The kids enjoyed it. PG

Tarzan – Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. The thought of a hubby doing anything to save the woman he loves made my heart swoon and run home to my own hubby. πŸ˜‰ PG-13

Beyond – I wanted to love it but I didn’t. I really liked the first one and the second (Hello? Benedict Cumberbatch!) but this third one was enjoyable but not great. PG-13

Suicide Squad – My expectations were so low that I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it. (The soundtrack would have been more enjoyable if there weren’t so many bleep words in many of the songs. ) PG-13

Listening to …

The newest songs added to my playlist – Red Flag by The Moth & The Flame and Heathen by 21 Pilots.

RevolutionofLove.com - bis_wrkshp_1

The other thing I have been listening to is the latest Blessed Is She Workshop – Raising a Holy Family: From Toddler to Teen by Kathryn Whitaker. She had so many excellent points, I had four pages of notes in my journal. I also loved being able to chat with the others and ask questions as we watched. Plus the fact that I could attend without leaving home, was the icing on the cake.

You can purchase the workshops individually or subscribe for the year and get at least one workshop a month (some months have two). Plus the much loved BIS Advent and Lent journals are auto shipped to you. If you buy these items anyway, it saves a lot to buy a membership. Just click here and go to the BIS shop.

The next workshop is scheduled for Aug 23. It is a prayer journaling workshop given byΒ  Ashley Woleben, a blogger and homeschooling mama who uses commonplacing and prayer journaling in her daily life. I hope to see you there!

Online Daybook/ 7QT (7/19/16): Growing Boys, Fave Shows, and Counting Calories & Pennies

RevolutionofLove.com - logo_online_daybook_1

~ 1 ~

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • The fog rolling out and the sun shining.
  • The sounds of the kids’ laughter as they play outside.
  • A few moments to myself to write.
  • Our little home that is a haven from the turmoils of the world.

Praying for..

  • My mom and her fight against cancer.
  • For Brian’s CT results and his upcoming appointment to see if he is still cancer free.
  • All those suffering from illness, especially those with terminal a disease.
  • For peace in the hearts of men and an end the senseless violence.
  • All those who have asked for my prayers.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

The other day I was balancing my checkbook and when I was done I went out for my walk to keep on top of my #rol100milesin100days challenge. As I was walking I was thinking, why is it that I am walking every day but not losing any weight? And why is it that we’ve made a little extra money lately but I barely have enough to pay the bills? I had a sneaky suspicion that my guesstimating about how much I was spending and how much I was eating may be a little off from reality.

RevolutionofLove.com - Bullet journal spending log - bujo_spend_edit

So this week I updated my monthly spending log. Then I started writing down everything that I put into my mouth. Suddenly it became apparent why mama was losing money and gaining weight. All those “insignificant” purchases here and there were adding up just as all those little nibbles here and there were. Sooo, that meant I had to get back to keeping track of what I eat and what I spend since both seem to be trigger marks that I love to indulge in. Ugh.

I was reading a blog post about a woman who was trying to curb her spending habit by making a wish list in her bullet journal. When she had the impulse to buy something she wrote it down and let a few days pass and a few dollars save up. Then when she had some extra money, she looked at her list to see if she really wanted an item on there or if the urge to buy had passed. I like that idea and may do the same. As for food, I am noticing that I always seem to screw up around 4 pm when I get the munchies. I started making sure I have baby carrots, red pepper slices or grapes on a plate in the kitchen counter to munch on. It’s not as tasty as chips and guacamole but such is life. πŸ˜‰ Do you have any tips on eating and spending less??

Around the House…

Summer life is still busy but I have pockets of time to work on projects. I have been taking one small cleaning project a week. Last week I put up a new book shelf and filled it with books that were overflowing our current shelves. The week before I tackled the corner of my bedroom that still held a baby table and random junk. I cleared that out and made a large pile to donate to charity. This week I will tackle the kids’ bathroom.

Family Chit Chat…

For those who were asking, my mom’s surgery went well and she is recovering nicely. She has an appointment later this week with her oncologist to figure out the next step in her cancer fight.

Meanwhile, Brian had a CT scan on Friday to make sure his cancer has not returned. We haven’t gotten the results yet but he has an appointment with his oncologist on Thursday so we’ll know by then. I appreciate the prayers! I always dread these appointments and worry a little about “what if.” I’m trying not to think about it!

RevolutionofLove.com -odb_7_19_16_an_jp_mx_12

The other day I was looking at a photo of the boys from four years ago. They look so young! Especially, since I feel like they have gotten so much older this summer!

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_7_19_16_an_jp_mx

See what I mean? Big boys! I don’t know how I will feel when they are teens. (I’m still in shocked that Bella starts high school in a couple weeks!) Anyway, this month the boys have been busy with swimming and next week they’ll attend Vacation Bible School.

In between there is a lot of playing outside, visiting the library and of course playing Pokemon Go! We went to Target to get school supplies but we were delayed in the parking lot as we tried to get two critters in our car. The bottom two pictures were taken in Monterey where the boys were excited to find their first Pikachu. At least it has gotten us outdoors more. I’m sure the excitement will last for another week or so then the novelty will wear off. πŸ˜‰

Reading…

The Summer Before the War

I’ve read Chapters 1-9 of The Summer Before the War. I stopped and waited for the book discussion over at Planned But Not Scripted. Are you it reading too? If so, add your comments on their blog post. I just did!

This week I will read the next section (and maybe just finish it ahead of schedule.) πŸ˜‰

East of Eden

In the meantime, I started (and finished all 600 pages, woohoo!) East of Eden. I’ll share more about it at the end of the month when I review my July reads.

Next I am reading…

The Bronte Plot

What are you reading?

Watching…

(ON TV)

One of our favorite British detective shows in Endeavor. I think we have one more episode left in our DVR.

Brian and I have been watching the BBC mystery/thriller Thirteen about a young girl who escaped after 13 years of captivity. The last episode is next week and we can’t wait to see how everything is wrapped up. (Parental note: This is rated MA. Language and adult situations.)

I am also two episodes into the BBC show The Crimson Field. I’m really enjoying it so far and there are so many familiar faces. It is available for free on Amazon Prime Video. (Parental note: I think this is rated TV-14. Adult situations and some battle field gore.)

Listening to …

I never get tired of this one – All We Ever Knew by The Head and the Heart.
