How I Use My Blessed Is She 2019-2020 Liturgical Planner

UPDATE: This post is about the 2019-2020 Blessed Is She Planner, which has sold out.

The new 2020-2021 Academic Planner (Aug 2020 – July 2021) is now available for pre-sale at a reduced price. Order your planner in the regular size or mini size in the Blessed Is She Shop: Planners. However, the information below is still useful for ideas of how you can use your planner.

Every August, it feels a bit like New Year’s since my life is dictated by the school schedules of my children. It’s a new month and a new school year and part of me is in disbelief that the summer has gone by so fast and the other part of me is swooning at the thought of “bouquets of newly sharpened pencils.”  😉

It’s also become a tradition over the last few years that I share with you, my fellow paper loving addicts, how I set up my new planner. I love brainstorming with you about how we can better utilize our planners. Last year I was using the I decided to switch to the regular sized (8 x 10) Blessed Is She Liturgical Planner.

Whether you have the regular or the mini, I’ll share ways in which I’ve made the best of both sizes in my life.

Although there is no need to decorate your planner, I love to add a little color and embellishment to make it my own. (The inner 8 year old in me still gets giddy with cute stickers.) 😉 On the inside cover I used a piece of scrapbook paper and added photos of the hubs and kiddos. They are the reason I try to keep my stuff together; it brings more harmony to our busy family life.

Inside the front cover there is also a pocket for loose items such as papers or planner stickers.

For my calendar, I like to color code my items. I switched up my system to match the color coding of my goal categories. Red (Daughter of God) is for spiritual activities such as Holy Hour, Confession, special Masses, Retreats, etc. Orange (Wife) are things like date nights. Green (Mom) are school events, violin classes, after school practice, play dates, etc. Blue is a combo of Homemaker and extended family – work on house projects, shopping/errand days, or activities with extended family members. Purple (Woman) is for me  – work outside the home, girls night out, self- care, etc. Pink is fun stuff on the calendar, like road trips or birthday parties.

There is a small key on the bottom of my calendar page. It may seem complicated, but I’ve been using the color code so long that it is now natural to me.

The weekly overview.

Here I have the week’s grocery items (to add to my master shopping list), meal plans, goals, and the week’s To Do’s. If I already know which day an item needs to be done, I’ll add the day of the week so it can be assigned to that day.

I divided the weekly notes section into two columns. One is still for notes and the other for a more random brain dump. Basically it’s ideas, I brainstorm and get out of my head, but I don’t necessarily need to do them at that moment. However, I know if I don’t write them down, they are easily forgotten. Since I sometimes need to reference these notes at a later date, I made it easier to find them by keeping track of where I wrote them.

In the larger note section in the back of the planner I assigned one page to be my Reference page. I jot down the topic and the week I wrote about it. So come next month, I’m not thumbing through all the past pages trying to figure out where the heck I wrote certain notes.

If you don’t need that larger note section, you could do different things with it such as make a Memories page to highlight the things you want to remember from the week. Or use it to make lists such as Book to Read, Movies to Watch or track things like how much money you spend or when you go to Confession. Or simply use it to write a favorite Scripture or short prayer. The possibilities are endless.

Weekly Schedule View

This is where I keep track of where I need to go. In the To Do’s, I list the top 5 things I have to get done that day (taken off the previous weekly master To Do list.) I use my same color code system that I had for the monthly calendar.

For the tracking circles at the top of the page, I trace my 5 daily goals. I put a letter for each as a reminder –  P (red/Daughter of God) – daily prayer, K (orange/Wife) – daily act of kindness towards Brian, R (green/Mom) – nightly read aloud with the boys, E (blue/Homemaker)I hijacked this circle and added E for exercise since there wasn’t a pressing daily homemaking goal, and S/FV (purple/Woman) – get more sleep, fruits & veggies into my day.

If I have the extra time I’ll mark the circle with the matching color. If I’m short on time, I just mark the done ones with one color. And truth be told, there are times when I skip it all together because I’m simply in survival mode. I want the planner to help me, not burden me with more work.

Also, there are some users who skip the time schedule all together and use the daily column as a long To Do list. That’s a great adaption as well. Whatever works best for you.

Speaking of goals, since the regular planner doesn’t have a goals page, as the MINI does, I used the last blank lined page of each month to put my monthly goals. Instead of writing them down I simply added my goal tending sheet from Lara Casey’s Cultivating What Matters.

Your Questions Answered

Whenever, I post photos of my planner of Instagram, I’ll often get the same questions. Here are the most common ones with my answers.

I’ve switched from a regular sized planner to a MINI. I like the smaller size, but I miss some of the larger features like the menu and shopping list. Any recommendations?

I loved the mini! I especially loved the goals page. However, it’s true that you give up other items.

After using the mini for a year, I found it best to make the most of the mini’s weekly page. I used the column on the left for my To Do’s. The right hand column I used to keep track of appointments or places I needed to be. For my menu, I simply used the last line in each day’s list to add the dinner meal of the day.

There were busier days when it would’ve been helpful to have a full hourly schedule, so I made my own in Word and printed it out. I was going to paperclip it to the page, but found that adding them to a bookmark was even better. I used Write and Erase Spiral Slide-In Bookmarks from Avery. I ordered a pack from Amazon and although they were too long, I simply cut off the bottom of the bookmark to make it shorter. I washi taped the schedule to the bookmark and it worked great. I kept the extras in the back cover pocket for the days I need one.

For the backside of the book mark, I made a printable with a notes section that could be used as a shopping list or notes.  The “notes” title is a little off to the right so I could add a sticker. (#nerd 😉 )

If you want to print out a copy of the daily schedule or notes section for yourself, I made them available in my Google Drive folder. Here is the Daily Schedule and here is the Notes Section. You can order the same bookmark or simply us a paper clip to add it to your weekly section. (Note on the bookmark: It is a bit loose since the insert tab is shorter than the length but so far it hasn’t been a problem. Also, when you print out the schedule or list, make sure the print job is set to landscape mode and not portrait.)

What kind of pens do you use?

  ***

When I write in my planner, I MUST be able to erase. I used to use pencil until I found these awesome erasable pens. These two sizes are my favorite.

The thin Pilot FriXion Pencil, 0.7mm Ballpoint Pen, 12 Colors Set (also available in the 24 pen set) are great. I love the various colors.

The thinner  Pilot Frixion Ball Knock Retractable Gel Ink Pen, 0.5mm, 10 Colors Set are perfect if you like your pens really fine or are writing in smaller spaces, such as the calendar section of the mini planner.

(One note: It has been said that the ink of these pens disappear in extreme heat, but the ink will reappear if book is placed in the freezer. I have never had an issue, but I also don’t live in extreme heat.)

Where do you get the book marks/ stickers/ washi in you planner?

This is the Avery Spiral Slide-In Plastic Bookmark Divider that I use. It can be used full size with the regular planner. The end has to be cut off when used with the mini planner.  (As previously shown.) They come in a pack of three, colored red, yellow, and aqua blue.

The stickers I have on the bookmark are from: Be A Heart.com (however, I think the Mary stickers are sold out.) Be Not Afraid sticker is from JustLovePrints and I Trust in You sticker from Someday Saints.

On the cover of my planner I added stickers from Blessed Is She (Shine) and Made for Christ (Sacred Heart.) She has so many awesome stickers in her new shop! I also attached a
Tiny Saints Charm of St. Anne, my patron.

You can find other great Catholic stickers from Santa Clara Design, Catholic Paper Goods, WithJoyfulHeart, and LeanneBowenFineArt. Have another favorite Catholic sticker shop? Let me know!

The magnetic book marks in the photos above were purchased from Target. The brand is Kelly Ventura for Blue Sky.

For a more complete list of all my favorite planner tools, including stickers, washi tape and pencil pouches, visit this post – My Favorite Stationary, Pens, Stickers, Planner and Hand Lettering Supplies.

When do you find time to decorate and update your planner?

I find Sundays are the best day for me. I can usually carve out an hour to myself and I sit down at my favorite spot on the couch in our family room. I go over the upcoming week, plan my meals, brain dump all the info in my head and organize it. Sometimes I listen to music or put on an old movie and sometimes I am surrounded by a bunch of wild boys cheering for their favorite football team (their dad included.) It’s not exactly peaceful, but they enjoy having me there cheering too. 😉

If I have time (and I’m in the mood) I’ll decorate and color code my week. If I don’t, I simply get the info down and don’t worry about it. The key is to use the planner. It can look like a work of art, but if it’s not being used and making your life easier, then something’s wrong. However, if you can use it and have fun, well, that’s the best of both worlds.

Happy planning!

Catholic Devotional for Kids – Rise Up: Shining with Virtue

When I first heard that Blessed Is She was thinking about making a Catholic devotional for kids, I was thrilled. I just knew in my heart that it was going to be something special. Then when I was asked to be one of the many writers to work on the book, I was humbled and excited. Not only would it be something I could pass along to my own children, it was something that could touch the heart of many, many young people.

Behind the scenes there were numerous moving parts that had to come together. It finally payed off and prayers were answered when I walked to the mailbox and held the newly released book in my hands. As I thumbed though the pages, I gasped at just how colorful and beautiful the book was. Erica Tighe Campbell of Be A Heart Designs, the designer and illustrator, outdid herself! Every page contains gorgeous graphics that, amazingly, would appeal to both boys and girls.

The book is divided into 15 chapters, written by 15 different BIS devotional writers. (I worked on chapter 8, the virtue of Obedience. 😃) Each chapter focuses on one of the virtues as taught by St. Thomas Aquinas – faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, gratitude, generosity, obedience, courage, perseverance, patience/mercy, temperance, humility, studiousness, and honesty. Our theological editor at BIS, Susanna Spencer, studied the virtues then wrote an introduction and conclusion for each virtue that retains the richness of truth, but is presented in a manner young people can understand.

Each chapter is set up to be read over 7 days. Day 1 is a Scripture to reflect on that week and an overview of the week’s virtue. Days 2 – 7 have a short reflection/lesson and prayer on the virtue, along with words of wisdom from the saints or Scripture. Although the book was written for kids, there are lessons rich enough for an adult to benefit from too!

I am so excited that the book is now available to the public. I highly recommend it for the young people in your life. It was especially make a perfect First Communion gift!

To view a walk-through of the first chapter, go to my Stories on Instagram titled “Rise Up.”

To find out more or to order your copy, go to the Blessed Is She shop. (Special thanks to those who order from my affiliate link.

I  hope you love the book as much my kids and I do!

Friday Favorites & Link-up (Vol. 22): Dapper Day Spring 2019 Edition

Happy Friday, friends! Welcome to Friday Favorites. I’m glad you could join me!

This week’s favorites are inspired by my upcoming to trip to Disneyland. Bella and I planned an impromptu mother-daughter trip at the beginning of her spring break.

It lands out that Sunday, April 14 is also Dapper Day at Disneyland. It is a day that celebrates elegant styles from yesterday and today.

There is an expo at Disneyland Hotel and guests of the expo are invited to dress up in their most dapper clothes while visiting the parks. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not a dress person, but after reading about the day Bella and I decided to participate. I will dress up in a 50’s style and Bella will be Disneybounding. See my favorites below for details!

Since I have seven faves, I’m also linking up with Kelly for 7 Quick Takes.

This Week’s Fave Activity

Road Tripping to Disneyland

I grew up going to Disneyland with my family and I was excited for the day I could do the same with my own family. For Brian and the boys, one big Disney trip a year is enough for them. However, Bella and I *love* going to Disneyland and once a year is not enough! So we started to take more frequent trips by ourselves.

The last time my mom went to Disneyland with us in Feb 2018

My mom and my sister Jacinta would often join us on these girls weekends and they are some of my favorite memories. This will be my first trip to Disneyland since my mom’s death, so I have conflicting emotions. However, I know she would want nothing more than for Bella and me to have fun and make mother-daughter memories so that’s exactly what I’ll do.

This Week’s Fave Piece of Clothing

Nemidor Vintage 50’s Style Dress

When I searched Amazon for 50’s style dresses, I fell in love with this navy and white dot polka dress. The fact that it came in plus size was the icing on the cake. I tried it on with fingers crossed and I was happy to find that the style was cute and the cut was forgiving. It’s the perfect dress for my first Dapper Day outing.

This Week’s Necklace

Jane Stone
Necklace and Earrings Set

I wanted to brighten up the dress so I added some red accessories. Pearls and earrings are a must for a 50’s dress, but the red color is more whimsical that a traditional white.

This Week’s Fave Bracelets

Uniklook Chic Urban Stack Bracelets

I didn’t buy these Uniklook bracelets for this outfit, but they were originally purchased on Amazon. I’ll add one or two to my outfit.

This Week’s Fave Purse

Purse

Lastly, you can’t have a vintage style dress without a matching vintage style purse. I thought this one from Donalworld would fit the bill perfectly since they matched the red flats I’m wearing. (There is no way I’d wear heels walking all day!)

This Week’s Fave Sneak Peek

The Outfit

Okay, there is your sneak peak at all the pieces put together. If you follow me on Instagram, watch my stories for posts while I’m at the Expo and Disneyland. 🙂

Now a preview of Bella’s outfit…

This Week’s FaveDisneybound Outfit

Aladdin

At Disneyland, children are allowed to enter the park in a Disney costume. However, teens and adults cannot, unless it’s for their Halloween party. To work around the rule, Disney fans will do what’s called Disneybounding. Basically you wear a normal outfit that is inspired by a favorite Disney character. It has the spirit and feel of the character, without actually being a costume. For Bella, she loves Aladdin so she will wear something similar to this Disneybounding outfit. 🙂

Those are my favorites of the week! What have you been enjoying?

Have a great weekend!

Friday Favorites & Link-up (Vol. 21) & 7QT

This Week’s Fave Activity

Being Creative

I’m not an artist, but I have a need to create, whether it is a blog post, hand lettering, taking a photo, decorating my planner or making our home look pretty. It brings me joy to make something new or bring a little beauty to my surroundings. How do you express your creativity?

~ 2 ~

This Week’s Etsy Artist

FlorLarios

I have lots of totes, but this is one of my favorites. I bought it a couple years back, but I still love using it. I have many pieces from Flor Larios in our home and just purchased a couple more small pieces that were on sale. Some of her items would make great gifts for Confirmation or Mother’s Day.

This Week’s Fave Book

Go Bravely by Emily Wilson Hussem

When I was at last year’s Blessed Is She’s Wild retreat, I heard Emily Wilson Hussem speak. We knew each other online, but it was the first time we met in person. She is an amazing woman of God, beautiful inside and out. I happily purchased her book Go Bravely to give to my teenage daughter. However, I wanted to read it first. Unfortunately (or fortunately,) I landed out having to buy a second copy for my daughter because I made so many underlines and notes in the margin. I am a couple decades over the target audience, but this book touched me deeply. Emily speaks with such love, compassion and fire that you cannot help but be motivated to be braver in your life and in your relationship with God. Granted, there are a couple of chapters that did not apply to me (ie. dating,) but those chapters were great to share with my daughter. Whether you are a young adult or far from it, there is wisdom and truth to be found in Go Bravely. I highly recommend it.

~ 4 ~

This Week’s Fave Children’s Books

California Young Readers Nominees

Once a week, I lead a library class at my son’s school. All month we’ve been reading nominees of the California Young Reader’s Medal. This week the students voted for their favorite story. They were all really funny or sweet books, but my personal favorite was Mother Bruce. 🙂

~ 5 ~

This Week’s Fave Saints

St. John the Baptist and St. John the Apostle

My two saints of the year have been praying along side me this Lent. St. John the Baptist has been inspiring me to be courageous and make straight the way of the Lord. St. John the Apostle has been challenging me to love God deeper and to remain faithful to Him even when life gets rough. What saints have been helping you lately?

~ 6 ~

This Week’s Fave Show

Supernatural

Earlier this month, one of my online friends suggested that I might like the show Supernatural. I had seen commercials for it over the years, but never sat down to watch an episode. Since I enjoyed shows like Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Grimm, I gave it a try. After the first episode, I was hooked. I waited for Brian to watch any more and now we are both hooked. We suddenly understand what all the Supernatural craze is about. We have been binge watching it in the evenings after the kids go to bed and this weekend we will finish season 2. My goal is to catch up over spring and summer so we can watch the final season 15 live. I’ll keep you posted. (Content warning: I’ve only seen the first two seasons, but so far there is TV14 bloody violence and some episodes have adult situations. The theology of the afterlife, demons, spirits and such is not completely in line with Catholic theology, but it definitely is a reminder of the reality of spiritual warfare. This is not everyone’s cup of tea, although it is mine.) 😉

This Week’s Fave Recipe

Slow Cooker Lentil Soup

It’s a Lenten Friday so we’re going with a meatless meal of slow cooker Lentil soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. I love this soup! It is really tasty. In fact, I need to start cooking, so I’d better wrap it up!

Those are my favorites of the week! What have you been enjoying?

Have a great weekend!

Online Daybook/ Currently: Winter 2019 Review & Fave Links, Books, Music & More

RevolutionofLove.com - logo_online_daybook_1

Happy First Monday of March! I haven’t done an Online Daybook/ Currently post since last summer! I miss it, so I’m doing one today. January and February were hard months, but I survived and there’s something to be said about celebrating the small victories in tough times. 🙂

Grateful for…

  • A new month and a new week to begin anew again.
  • Plenty of rain instead of being in drought mode.
  • Online community love.
  • Family time.
  • Date nights with my sweetie.

Praying for..

  • Those fighting cancer, illness and mental health issues.
  • Many special intentions from family and friends, especially those carrying heavy crosses.
  • For people mourning the loss of loved ones.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friends and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

When times are tough, or you just have a day that sucks, it’s easy to forget the blessings around you. I know I am often guilty of this. God has reminded me that I need to stop for a moment and instead of looking at the one thing that is giving me a stress headache, to look at the bigger picture and find something positive about the situation. This applies even to mourning the loss of my mom. I can be mad that she was taken from us too soon or I can accept it and be thankful that we had so many wonderful memories with her.

When we first learned of Mom’s cancer two years ago, she set three goals for herself – to make it to her 70th birthday, to make it to her 50th Wedding Anniversary, and to make as many memories as she could in whatever time she had left. She accomplished all three goals and for that I am filled with gratitude. So taking that lesson, I am trying to look not at what is wrong at a given moment, but to turn it around and see it as a small glitch in a much larger positive picture. It’s not always easy, but it keeps the stress headaches away. 😉

Family Chit Chat…

As I said, January and February were hard, although there were happy moments weaved into the months. We are all doing well, but busy as usual. I shared the details more in my Instagram Stories, but here is a recap of the highlights.

January Memories…

Saying goodbye to my mom and best friend, in my heart, at the funeral and in her eulogy. // On the plus side, mom got her final wish and all her family – including her nine children and twenty grandchildren were together celebrating her life and carrying on the love of family. // We returned back home and after so much heartache and so many tears. I am starting to feel like I am getting back to my old self. // The boys run a mile to help raise money for the Children of Compassion, that helps orphaned and disabled children in Africa go to school.

February Memories…

Brian had a work thing that allowed us a night away. I enjoyed being spoiled for a night. // On Valentines, I celebrated the love of God, my spouse, my children, family and friends. // I continued to use (and love) my Every Sacred Sunday Mass Journal. // After a break during the holidays and family mourning, Andrew continued with his violin lessons. // During an impromptu trip to visit my family, I visited my sister and her snowy home. The kids saw and played with snow for the first time in their lives. 🙂 // I’ve been enjoying evenings with my boys doing #readaloud on weekdays and watching movies or cooking shows on weekend nights. <3

Reading…

Rich People Problems (Crazy Rich Asians, #3) by Kevin Kwan

I finished the final book of the Crazy Rich, Asians trilogy. Of the three, the first book was my favorite and this is my second favorite. There were a few parts that lagged a bit, but I enjoyed reading about the continuing adventures that make me want to exclaim alamack! All in all, it was a fun trilogy and I’m looking forward to the next movie. (Content warning: I’d rate this hard PG13/soft R because of language and definite adult situations, but not explicit.)

One Day in December by Josie Silver

I listened to the audio version of this during last week’s road trip and it made the miles just zoom by. The story was right out of a Hallmark movie – a woman and man see each other and sparks fly as they fall in love at first sight. However, circumstances keep them from actually meeting each other. The girl searches for the guy and a year later she finally finds him, but things don’t work out as she dreamed. The story was fun and I loved the will they-won’t they tension. However, this was definitely written from a worldly point of view and not a sanitized Hallmark version. I’d consider the content as Rated R for language and various sexual situations. It wasn’t so explicit that I stopped reading (as I have with other books) but it’s not one I could freely recommend unless I knew the content wouldn’t bother you. If you watch rated MA TV shows, then you may enjoy it. If you don’t, skip to the next book review.

The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill (Tales from Ivy Hill, #1) by Julie Klassen

The Ladies if Ivy Cottage (Takes from Ivy Hill, #2) by Julie Klassen

After reading one or two books like the ones above, I need to cleanse the palette with a wholesome book with Christian values. One of my favorite authors in Julie Klassen. I decided to read her Ivy Hill trilogy for Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Reading Challenge book category “three books by the same author.” I really enjoyed the first book because it wasn’t her usual  romance book (as much as I love those.) The greater theme was of a young widow navigating life life as a business women, during a time when that was highly unusual. Seeing her grow, navigating friendships (new ones and old ones lost) was a refreshing change of pace.

The second volume of the trilogy had more romantic content and I enjoyed rooting for certain couples to get together and also enjoyed solving the puzzle of minor mysteries. I really enjoyed both books and just started book 3.

Watching…

(ON TV)

After the kids are in bed and sleeping, we’ve been watching shows like Manifest, This Is Us, A Million Little Things, Lethal Weapon, Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn 99, Mom, Speechless and American Housewife. We just watched the pilot of Whiskey Cavalier. I’ve got Victoria on DVR but I’ll watch that alone since Brian is not a big fan. What are your faves?

(MOVIES)

I used to go see at least two movies a month, but I haven’t gone to the movies in ages. I’m just now starting to watch all the Academy Awards Best Picture nominees. What was your personal pick for Best Picture?
