November/ December 2015 (Holiday) Goals & A Review of My October Goals

RevolutionofLove.com - Nov/Dec Goals 2015 (logo_nov_dec_goals)It’s officially been a year since I first started to get into the habit of making goals. Those goals have been a big help and I am so thankful for the last year working with Laura Casey’s Powersheets. They were super helpful in making me look deep into myself and see what I wanted out of life, what fears held me back (without even realizing it) and challenged me to reach higher than I thought I could go. They set me on the right track and made goal-making a reality in my life but now I feel like it is time to change things up and work on my goals through a little different process.

RevolutionofLove.com - Nov/Dec Goals 2015 (goals_nov_dec_1)

As I mentioned before, I am taking Mystie Winckler’s online course Work the Plan.Β  The course technically does not open until January 1st but I was able to get in early when she had early enrollment in September. I’ll post more about the course in the future but one element that I really like is that instead of monthly goals, she recommends “interval” goals lasting 6-9 weeks. She said our smaller goals should run for at least six weeks since it take that long for an act to form into a habit. Makes sense.

RevolutionofLove.com - Nov/Dec Goals 2015 (goals_nov_dec_3)

She is also helping us to make our yearly goals and break them down into interval goals. (I’ve chosen to make my intervals bi-monthly so I’ll be working on these smaller goals through November and December.) For each interval, we pick 1-3 projects we want to accomplish by the end of it. We list the tasks that we need to do to accomplish these projects. Those tasks will compromise my even smaller weekly and daily goals. Those along with the daily habits I want to work on will keep me busy for the next two months!

I kept my daily habits really simple because I know what the holiday season is like. I am super busy and I’m prone to get super stressed! So I need to just work on the basics – prayer, sleep, vitamins, water, etc because all these just seem to get forgotten when I am going full speed! I am also really trying to be intentional about my time and making sure that I am not wasting it by wandering around aimlessly working on too many things at once and not actually getting anything done. Ugh!

My main big goals do not change but my mini-goals change depending on the areas I need to work on the most. So here is a summary of my progress and my mini goals for November/December.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_daughterMain Goal #1: To always have God at the center of my life and to deepen my love for Him. I want his will to be my will and motivation.

October Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Continue with the 15 minutes of prayer in the morning until it becomes second nature. – For the most part, yes but could still use some work.
  • Substitute a half-hour (or so) of watching TV or listening to music with something of greater substance, like listening to an uplifting podcast or reading a devotional/ spiritual book. – I’d say 50/50. It was improved but some nights I just wanted to veg in front of the TV and not think. LOL.
  • Get away from the regular routine for a bit and go to the chapel for prayer and confession. – Done.

Nov/Dec Mini-Goals

  • Continue with the 15 minutes of prayer in the morning using the Jesse Tree devotion for the first time this Advent. I won an Advent Devotional Book for Women from Jenny at The Littlest Way (Yay! Thanks, Jenny!) so I’ll be using that along with the beautiful new Advent cards from Blessed Is She.
  • Short exam and Act of Contrition at end of the day.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_wifeMain Goal #2: To be a loving and holy wife to Brian and to work at keeping our marriage strong, to nurture our friendship and spend time alone to reconnect.

October Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Continue to plan weekly date nights and monthly out of the house dates. – We had our first lunch date with Bella babysitting the boys. Having a child old enough to babysit for short periods of time is a game changer!!
  • Make a conscious effort to thank Brian more when he does something for me or the kids and not just take it for granted. – I’d grade myself with a sold B-, with room for improvement.
  • Let Brian help me out when he offers and stop acting like he can’t do it the way I would do it. Let him have his own way of doing things. (I’ll tell you right now, that one is going to be tough!) – Yeah, this was tough but I think I did fairly well. Well, except for that time…yeah, I can still work on this.

Nov/Dec Mini-Goals

  • Continue to plan weekly date nights and monthly out of the house dates. Our lives are so centered around the kids and work that we really need to keep this up. It helps out so much I don’t want to it to let it slip away.
  • Continue to make a conscious effort to thank Brian more when he does something for me or the kids and not just take it for granted.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_motherMain Goal #3: To be a good mother that loves her kids and spends time with them and is not always “too busy.” I want to teach them about their faith and how to love and serve God in their young lives.

October Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Continue to work on doing what dinner prep I can in the early afternoon so I can spend an hour in the late afternoon helping the kids with their homework. – This was a huge fail. I need to work on a better plan to help the kids with their homework and not leave it all to Brian when he comes home. Realistically, with the holidays and upcoming school vacation days, this won’t be properly tackled until January. We’ll revisit it then.
  • Get the boys involved in Just Run at school and take walks as a family on the weekend. – Yes, on the Just Run and so-so on the family walks. Lots of busy (or rainy) weekends.

Nov/Dec Mini-Goals

  • Make an Advent Plan to help us keep our eyes on Christ and not get wrapped up in the materialism and busyness of the season. This year we will be doing the Jesse Tree for the first time and I will pick one (or two) of our other Advent Activities to do with the kids.

* * *

RevolutionofLove.com - goal_homemakerMain Goal #4: To bring order into our home so I am not stressed out by the mess and chaos. When things are organized our family life runs smoother and there is more peace.

October Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • I’ve been slacking on my meal planning and going to the store too often so back to weekly meal plans on Sunday. – A couple weeks were good and a couple were no bueno! Grr.
  • Spend time on the weekends with Mystie’s Work the Plan course. I have a full calendar in October so the weekends will be the only times I can have a little extra time for this. – Yes. I wanted to be done with the course by now but I’m not. However, I have made progress and feel like I had a things in place to make it through the next two months with my sanity intact. πŸ˜‰

Nov/Dec Mini-Goals

  • Make a travel plan for our yearly Fall trip to Disneyland and visiting my family so I can enjoy the trip and be adequately organized.
  • Make a Christmas plan and budget and stick to it so I am not overly stressed and over budget.

* * *RevolutionofLove.com - goal_womanMain Goal #5 – To take care of myself physically, spiritually and mentally so I can be a happy and healthy wife, mother and friend. Taking care of myself mentally also means challenging myself to come out of my comfort zone and facing my fears and trying new things.

October Mini-Goals Reviewed

  • Once summer is over I tend to drink less so this month more H2O and take my vitamins. (So easy to do yet I always forget!) – Not super bad but not great. Seriously needs more work.
  • Complete the #write31days blogging challenge and write a post each day on my topic – 31 Days of Gratitude. – I did it, baby!
  • Complete the Lisa’s online class #LoveYourLettering about how to love your own handwriting and learn the basics of hand lettering. (I started here.) – I made it about 1/2 way but had to stop because there was too much other stuff going on. However, I do love the course and what I’ve learned so far and REALLY want to continue as time allows.

Nov/Dec Mini-Goals

  • Basics – water, vitamins, walk at least 20 minutes and in bed by 11 on school nights.
  • Follow the plan! Don’t do what I FEEL like doing but get the priorities finished. This month’s motto – suck it up and get it done!…with a smile. πŸ˜‰
  • RevolutionofLove.com - Nov/Dec Goals 2015 (goals_nov_dec_2)
  • This may be crazy but this month I switched my planners. I know! I have loved my Erin Condren for the past year and a half and I posted last month about how I set it up BUT as I’ve been taking Mystie’s course, it talked about how well the bullet journal went with the plan. The more I looked into the bullet journal the more I sort of fell in love with it’s simplicity yet room for creativity. I decided to try it out in November and December when my planner is really put the test. If I like how it goes, I’ll stick with the bullet journal. If I don’t, I’ll go back to my EC planner in Jan 2016. I’ll write a separate post about setting up my bullet journal soon.

Okay, that’s it for now. Time to get dinner on the table.

Pinterest Party & Link-up (vol 41): A Sacred Space for Family Prayer

Pin. Create. Inspire. Pinterest Party & Link-up. (pinterest_logo_new_640)Join me for a Pinterest Party every first Tuesday of the month as we link up and pin it, create it, and inspire others to do the same. Recipes and crafty ideas are encouraged but think outside the box too. Think organizing ideas, birthday themes, a cute outfit, a new hairstyle, marriage tips, life inspiration, traveling destinations, a great quote – anything you’d post to Pinterest.

Show us how you didn’t just pin it but brought it to life!

Not on Pinterest? No problem. Link-up your own creation to inspire us so we can pin in to our own boards. Don’t have a post ready? The link-up will be open for (normally) a month but this one is open for a year! So there’s still time. Plus, feel free to link up a new post or an older post that hasn’t had much traffic lately. πŸ™‚ (If you want to grab the button, scroll to the bottom.)

RevolutionofLove.com - Creating A Sacred Space in  Your Home - altar_collage_2

When I was growing up and after our family had a reversion to the faith, my mom set up a little table in the house that was the family “prayer table.” It held the family bible, a candle and seasonal decor, such as the baby Jesus during Christmas. I loved the idea and brought it into our own home once Brian and I were married. He both had a love of icons and found ourselves with quite the collection. We hung them up in various places in our house and created sacred spaces – spots that reminded us of the eternal and turned our minds to God. When we first got married and lived in a small apartment our space was a tiny broken down nightstand that we set up in the corner of the room.RevolutionofLove.com - bis_altar_1

Once we moved into our current home, we used the kitchen table from our old apartment that was now too small for our family.Β  We set it up in the entry way right next to our front door.

RevolutionofLove.com - Sacred Spaces in the Home -pp_altar_7 Years ago I went to a book sale at our parish and I found the exact same family bible that my parents had. I was so excited to bring it into our home. My kids would grow up looking at the same beautiful religious artwork that I loved. We also have on the table our pregnant mama statue (given to me by a special friend) to represent all the pregnant mamas we are praying for, especially family members. We also have a photo of the little girl we sponsor in Mexico named Abi. She has become a sweet part of our family.

Liturgical Prayer Space

I love our entry way prayer table but it doesn’t change during the year. Plus I wanted to have something in the family room since that is where we spend the bulk of our time, where we eat and say grace, where we gather to say our family night prayers, where we sit on the couch and spend time together. I thought this was the room that needed a little sacred space.

I decided to use the top of an old cabinet a friend gave us. It wasn’t fancy but it would do. We gathered a number of our icons and placed them on the wall.

Here are some samples of how the top of the shelf changes through the liturgical season.

LENT/ EASTER

RevolutionofLove.com - Sacred Spaces in the Home - pp_altar_8 We set up the Stations of the Cross prints and a candle centerpiece using a long rectangular tray filled with six votive candles for the six weeks of Lent. Similar to an Advent wreath, we light one each week. We printed off Catholic Icing’s Lenten Calendar and I placed it in an inexpensive frame from Ikea. I use a dry erase pen to mark a cross on each day as it passes. It is great for the kids, who have no sense of time, to see how many more days until Easter. Lastly we added our Acts of Love Jar (with little acts we can do) and our Prayer Jar (with a daily intention) which we choose from each day. To keep track of the acts of love we do, we use Catholic All Year’s idea of the Sacrifice Beans.

FALL/ ALL SAINTS’ DAY

RevolutionofLove.com - Making Sacred Spaces in Your Home -pp_altar_2Each month we focus on a different prayer or invocation. In October we were teaching the kids the Guardian Angel prayer so we used Catholic All Year’s super hero prayer printable. On the feast of All Saints’ Day, I was inspired by Mary’s post at Sometimes Martha Always Mary.com and I printed our the patron saints of our family from Happy Saints.com. (They have some really cute and inspirational products.) We have St. Joseph (Brian’s patron), St. Anne (my patron and middle name), St. Rose (Bella’s middle name), St. Andrew, St. John-Paul, St. Matthew, Our Lady of Lourdes (For Baby Victor whom we miscarried on her feast day) and St. Junipero Serra (For Baby Joseph who was also miscarried. We have a family devotion to our Carmel Mission saint.) In November we have a printable with the photos/ names of deceased family members and friends.

ADVENT/ CHRISTMAS

RevolutionofLove.com - Pinterest Party: The Jesse Tree - advent_jesse_tree_4During Advent we have our Mysteries of the Rosary prints, “hay” for Baby Jesus’s manger, the Advent Calendar (both explained here) and our Jesse Tree with Jesse Tree cards fromΒ Blessed Is She.

Night Prayer/ Rosary Time

A couple months ago on the feast of Our Lady’s birthday we started praying night prayers and a decade of the rosary together. It is not always easy but we’ve been faithful to it and it has been beneficial to the family. It’s encouraging to see the kids grab their rosaries and tell us that it’s time to pray. It is heartening to hear them say their intentions, whether it is for a friend who was sad at school or for Kylo Ren to turn good. To help the kids stay focused, we light a candle and turn off the lights. It helps to set the mood and keeps the kids relatively quiet. (Unfortunately, there are still the arguments that a sibling is praying too slow or too fast or that a swinging rosary hit somebody in the head but… baby steps, right?)

At least we no longer have arguments about who gets to pray first or who gets to blow out the candles. (Nothing like a yelling match to put you in a prayerful mood, eh?) We have a prayer leader of the day. They get to start off the intentions, the rosary and blow out the candle at the end. If we unavoidably miss an evening prayer time, we light two candles the next evening for the current leader and the boy who missed blowing out the candle the night before because that job is SUPREME.

RevolutionofLove.com - Sacred Spaces in Your Home - pp_altar_1bTo also avoid the tangled rosaries in a basket, lost rosaries or the he-has-the-color-I-like fights, everyone keeps their rosary in one central location in our hallway by the door leading to the family room.

RevolutionofLove.com - Sacred Spaces in Your Home - pp_altar_4The print of Our Lady was painted by one of my favorite artists Flor Larios.

RevolutionofLove.com - Sacred Spaces in Your Home - pp_altar_5The numbered hooks I found at Marshals. I’ll admit I bought it while shopping with my sister who was visiting last year. I had no idea what I’d use it for but I knew I’d find something…and viola! πŸ˜‰

Prayer Spaces in BedroomsRevolutionofLove.com // bis_altar_2

In our bedroom, I also added a sacred space for Brian since he likes to say his prayers in there.

RevolutionofLove.com // bis_altar_3In the kids’ room, I didn’t think it would be wise to have candles and statues since there are too many swinging light sabers. Instead I hung up two framed prints and a rosary.

Setting Up Your Own Space

RevolutionofLove.com // bis_post_6Don’t have a sacred space yet? Whether you are single, married or a mama of many, it’s easy to make one. Just find a little spot in your home to make your little prayer area. It can be a mantle, a book shelf, a small table, a wall shelf or whatever you can create. Add a statue, crucifix, icon or a framed printable. Maybe a candle, flowers or seasonal decor. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like.

Put together your sacred space and share it with us. Hashtag #BISsisterhood andΒ #familysacredspace. If you are a blogger, link up your sacred space post below.

31 Days of Gratitude 2015 (Day 31): The End of the #write31days Challenge

RevolutionofLove.com - 31 Days of Gratitude 2015logo_31_days15_B_500The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 31 of my 31 Days of Gratitude 2015.

* * *

Well, I did it. I posted 31 days in a row, completing my second #write31days challenge. I’ll admit that many of the posts were so short I normally wouldn’t have bothered posting at all but I didn’t want to break the streak. Besides getting me in the habit of writing more, it truly was an exercise in learning to be more grateful even on the days when I didn’t “feel” it.

RevolutionofLove.com (31_days15_day31)

Pumpkin carving and Peanuts cartoons. What more do you need for a Halloween afternoon?

I was hoping to do a recap of #loveyourlettering today but it was another day filled with family time so I never got a chance. Luckily the class has been extended into November so I still have time to finish catching up.

I hope you had a fun Halloween and enjoy a blessed All Saints Day tomorrow!

For the month of October and all the joyful moments that came with it, I am truly thankful. πŸ™‚

31 Days of Gratitude 2015 (Day 30): Halloween Fun

RevolutionofLove.com - 31 Days of Gratitude 2015logo_31_days15_B_500The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 30 of my 31 Days of Gratitude 2015.

* * *

I have been out of the house and busy since 7:30 AM. Eleven hours later I finally have a moment to sit down and relax after a fun but busy day. The kids had their school Halloween parade and mini-carnival (where I was working) and them we went Trick or Treating at the local shopping mall that has a great Halloween party for kids. Added bonus, Brian was able to get off work early and he surprised us at the afternoon party. Yay!

RevolutionofLove.com (31_days15_day30)Bella (Care Bear), Matthew (Ezra from Star Wars Rebels), John-Paul (Storm trooper) & Andrew (Jedi Knight)

It was fun but as far as I am concerned, Halloween is done. LOL. Tomorrow we will carve pumpkins and make Halloween cupcakes decorated by the kids. We’ll most likely skip night trick or treating since we’d have to drive to another neighborhood (there are no kids around here and we live on a hill with no sidewalks.) Plus the kids get freaked out by scary Halloween decor (surprisingly, except for the youngest.) So we’ll see how that works out tomorrow. (Parent code for: “It will depend on how tired mom and dad are come nightfall.”)

As tired as I am, I had so much fun with my little guys and sweet girl. And some of the kids I observed today were so wild and ill mannered! I was pleased to see that my kids may be wild at home but in public, they know how to behave themselves (for the most part.) But now, it’s time to crash on the couch. For all these things, I am truly thankful. πŸ™‚

31 Days of Gratitude 2015 (Day 29) & Theme Thursday

RevolutionofLove.com - 31 Days of Gratitude 2015logo_31_days15_B_500The 31 Day of Writing Challenge continues. It’s Day 29 of my 31 Days of Gratitude 2015.

I’m linking up with Micaela for Theme Thursday: Silhouette.

* * *

Two days ago I woke up to find that there was no electricity, for the second time is just over a week. If you happen to send your children to a traditional school, you know how crazy the mornings can be to get everyone up, fed,Β  lunches made, kids dressed and backpacks packed. It’s tough on a normal day, let alone one with no elecricity. I was freaking out a little as I scrambled with a flashlight and made breakfast without opening the fridge – peanut butter sandwiches and apple slices, kids.

As we ate breakfast, we waited for the sun to rise and give us a little light.

Andrew called me over to look at the pink sky. We all ran out on the deck in our pj’s and I grabbed my camera to take a few shots. Despite the chill of the morning, there was a calming warmth as the light spread and you felt like no matter how dark it may seem, God’s light will always penetrate and break the darkness. We went back into the house and a few minutes later, power was restored. Hooray! We quickly got ready and made it out the door in record time.

For that moment of seeing God’s beauty, for the reminder to trust in God’s light to illuminate the darkness, for the blessing of electricity, I am truly thankful!

RevolutionofLove.com - Theme Thursday - sillhouette_1The photo I took that day was perfect for this week’s Theme Thursday. Since it was still dark there was a natural silhouette as the sun was rising. I opened up the photo in PicMonkey (the paid subscription) because it is fast and easy but I didn’t think it needed much editing. I just cropping out a tiny bit of a neighbors roof. I also moved the shadow levels two notches to the left so the trees would be a bit darker but other than that, this is pretty much how it came out.

A big thanks to Micaela for hosting! πŸ™‚
