od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • The love of my family and friends.
  • Spring flowers blooming everywhere.
  • God’s mercy and His untiring desire to pick us up when we fall.
  • Food on the table, a roof over our head and material blessings we often take for granted.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Those fighting addiction and mental illness.
  • Those suffering from illness, injustice and abuse.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friends and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my father-in-law’s death. I was looking over my Daybook post I wrote a year ago and it brought all the memories and tears back. I wrote…

It was a Wednesday and I stopped by the nursing home to visit with him. After his third stroke he was no longer able to speak but I chatted with him about the kids and Brian. At one point I felt like an idiot, not knowing if he even knew who I was or if he understood what I was saying. I was hoping that my voice wasn’t like an annoying buzz in his ear. He looked at me and smiled but there was no connection when our eyes met. He drifted off to sleep and I was goingΒ  to leave but I thought I would stay just a few more minutes.

He woke back up and he looked at me and smiled but then he looked at me more intently and I saw it in his eyes, that glimmer. He smiled deeper and I saw the recognition. He knew it was me. I chatted a little and them he tried to talk to me. He grunted and tried to speak with emphasis but his words came out like gibberish. I listened then smiled and kissed his cheek and said, “I know, dad. That’s great.” He smiled back at me contently and I rubbed his shoulder until he dosed off again. Finally I kissed him good bye and let him sleep. I’d never see him open his eyes again.

Β© Revolution of Love.com - cwa_4_14_16__mvx_opaMatthew holding Opa’s hand.

The next day Brian went to see his dad on his lunch break and the nurse said he was not doing well. He was asleep in bed and unresponsive. They could not get him to wake up to eat or drink. They told us that he’d most likely pass away in a day or two. Luckily the kids were off of school for Easter break so we all went over to the Center to sit with him, hold his hand and just be with him. Afterwards we said our final goodbyes to Opa and told him we loved him in case he passed away in the night while we were gone. I took the kids home and Brian stayed with my mother-in-law. Later he came home and my MIL stayed until the nurses told her to go home and get some sleep and they’d call her if anything happened.

The next morning Brian took the day off work and instead went to sit with Opa. He had a feeling today would be the day. He took the first shift to sit with Opa and then we’d meet him there after I fed the kids breakfast. Brian texted me and said Opa was just the same as yesterday. He was still sleeping and his heart rate was still low. While Brian was there he prayed for Opa and read to him the scripture about the Jesus’ resurrection. When he finished reading, Opa opened his eyes for the first time in two days. He stared off into the distance and then turned his head and looked at Brian. Then he closed his eyes and fell back asleep. Then he passed away. Brian said the whole room was filled with peace. Moments later I arrived with the kids. Brian told us that he just passed so we went in and kissed him goodbye again one last time. I took the kids back to the car so they would not have to see my MIL grieve over my FIL’s body. It was a piercing scene that leaves me in tears whenever I remember it.

The grief completely drained me but later I was able to feel relief that my FIL’s physical suffering was over. I am glad that his last days were filled with smiles and his eyes lighting up when he saw the kids. Even if he could not speak, we treasured the moments when we could see his joy in the simple pleasures of a kiss on the check or a picture the kids drew for him. He will always live on as we remember his loving smile, his tenacious spirit and his generous heart. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

* * * * *

Sometimes, I feel close to Opa and ask him to pray for us, as we pray for him each day. Other times I feel the emptiness of not having him around. I miss him.

Reading…

Okay, I seriously need to sit down and write a post aboutΒ  the last few books I’ve read, which includes these…

North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

* * *

Truly, Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

* * *

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson

Watching…

(MOVIES)

I saw a number of movies in February and March. I wanted to see all the movies nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. I watched three more on the list. My favorite of the three was Hidden Figures.

hidden_figures

I went to see this movie on a whim since the movie was starting at the time I was available. After walking out of the movie it became my favorite of 2016. Hidden Figures is the story of three amazing women mathematicians working at NASA – Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. They lived in a time when society viewed them as “less than” for being both African American and women. I bristled at some of the scenes of prejudice and it made me want to knock some heads together but their frustration did not squelch their passion. Katherine, Dorothy and Mary’s stories of perseverance and determination was able to shine thanks to a well written story, excellent acting and touches of humor. This is a must-see movie. (Parental note: Rated PG for thematic elements and some language.)

manchester_sea_

After the death of his older brother, Lee is shocked to find out that he has been named his 16 year old nephew’s guardian. Lee moves back to his hometown where he must face his demons and a painful past. This is the perfect movie to watch when you want to wallow in some sadness and have an ugly cry. I rated it 3.5 out of 5 stars, Parental note: Rated R for some sexual content and language throughout.

hell_high_water

This movie is about two brothers who live a modern day story or David and Goliath or Robin Hood in the setting of a dusty Texan town. I found myself torn between rooting for the good “bad guys” or the likable sheriff trying to track them down. Franky, I was a little surprised this was one of the best movies of the year. I enjoyed it and Brian liked all the action but it didn’t seem like the typical nominee.Β  I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. Parental note: Rated R for some strong violence, language throughout and brief sexuality.

On the tamer sides of things, I also watched…

legobatmanmovie

The Lego Batman Movie was hilarious. I don’t know who enjoyed it more – me or the kids. There are a few scary parts with the villains (some of the chosen villains are genius) that may upset the youngest of your little ones but otherwise, if you enjoyed The Lego Movie, make sure to watch this one too.Β  I rated it a 4.5 out of 5. Parental note: Rated PG for rude humor and some action.

beautyandthebeast

There was a lot of controversy surrounding Beauty and the Beast and rumbles that it wasn’t that good, but personally, I loved it. I thought it was beautiful as it stayed true to the story of love and redemption from the original and added more depth to the story line of Belle and the Beast in regards to their mothers. The music was wonderful and I enjoyed the added songs. For those who asked me about a gay agenda in the movie, there was innuendo done for laughs that would most likely go over a child’s head. Frankly, if I was someone hoping for a “gay moment” I would have disappointed that I received so little. (Granted that is just my opinion. If you are concerned, screen it before you take your children.) My boys had no interest in the movie since there were no light sabers or super heroes but Bella and I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to see it again. Parental note: Rated PG for peril, frightening images and some action violence. (If you want a more in-depth review, I found this one helpful.)

(TV)

Most of the usual shows we watch of winding down for the season. Tonight we’ll watch the final Grimm episode and continue with Ironfist on Netflix.

We also are looking forward to season 2 of Homefires, which I believe starts Sunday on PBS.

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • Hopefully, that my blog is working now. (It was down for a few days.)
  • A break of warm sunshine after weeks of rain.
  • All the much needed rain.
  • The love of family and friends.
  • Food on the table, a roof over our head and material blessings we often take for granted.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Our divided country.
  • The unity of all Christians.
  • Those fighting addiction and mental illness.
  • Victims of violence, racism and abuse and for the conversion of their oppressors.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friends and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_1_2017d

The need of sisterhood. Over the month of January, Blessed Is She has sponsored the prayer pledge where we’ve pledge to start the new year right and take time to pray every day in January. There is a daily prayer prompt for inspiration and members of the Blessed Is She team took turns each day to do InstaStories on Instagram showing you how we incorporate prayer into our daily lives and to lead Live Prayer in the evening at 6:00 PM PT/9:00 PM ET. I led twice this month and I was touched by how many ladies sent messages and prayer intentions. They were grateful to be in solidarity with us and each other. They opened up about their struggles in hopes that we would join them in prayer to God.

Yesterday morning I gathered with other moms at the kids’ school to pray the rosary together. It has become a weekly activity and I can’t tell you how beneficial it is to my soul to stop and pray with like minded sisters. It means a lot to know that they are praying for me and I am praying for them. When I am feeling lazy and think about all the other stuff I need to get done in my day, I am tempted to skip it but knowing they are there gives me that nudge to put in the extra effort. I am always thankful that I did. So whether we find out community of sisters online or in your own backyard, I do hope you are able to connect with other women who can support you and pray for you. And if you need someone to lift you in prayer, you are always welcome to leave a comment or email me at rol(at)revolutionoflove.com and I’d be happy to add you to my prayer list. πŸ™‚

Around the House…

I haven’t been able to work a lot on my decluttering list since Brian has an extra work project that I have been helping him with and it has taken up my free time. However, I have been working on one of my other 2017 goals and letting the kids cook with me in the kitchen more. Granted there have been some days when I had to ban them out of the kitchen because I seriously just needed to get the meal done ASAP but most days, I let them join me.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_1_2017e

My master chef.

Yesterday was Matthew’s turn and when Brian came home from work, he ran to the door and excitedly exclaimed that it was his day to make dinner with me that night. Brian smiled and whispered to me that he guessed dinner will take an extra half hour or so. Well, maybe 15 minutes. πŸ˜‰ Truthfully, Matthew actually really did help with getting veggies washed and some easier prep done.Β  At least I’ll have two sons who will feel comfortable in the kitchen. The other son has little interest in domestic work so I still need to work on him. πŸ˜‰

Family Chit Chat…

On a field trip with John-Paul.

Life is busy but going well. We’re half way done with the school year and the countdown for summer vacation has begun. It seems a little early to be excited about swimming and trips to Lake Tahoe but John-Paul has been praying each evening that Grandma would be well enough to come to Lake Tahoe with us this year. (Last year she was waiting to have her surgery to remover the cancer.) So far my mom is doing well, and we pray she continues that path.

Speaking of cancer, next week (on Monday 1/30) Brian goes for his cancer testing to make sure he is still clean. I can’t help but nervously hold my breath as I wait for the test results. Frankly, it’s damn scary but I’m trying to not let it take over my thoughts and instead leave it in God’s hands. Your prayers for Brian (and my sanity) will be appreciated!

Watching…

(MOVIES)

lalaland

My first movie of 2017 was La La Land. I’ve got to admit that I’m not a huge musical fan. I have some favorites but I wouldn’t count musicals as a favorite genre. I went into La La Land with some trepidation and when the opening sequence began with a full on scene of people leaping out of their cars to sing and dance, I thought, “Oh, no, what did I get myself into?” Luckily, it took only a few minutes to win me over and get my feet tapping. I landed out loving the movie and all the nods to old school Hollywood. The music was infectious and I’m listening to the soundtrack as I am typing here. My only complaint is that while I loved Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in their roles, their singing was less than stellar considering that it was a musical. I’m guessing their star power trumped their musical abilities. With that said, I still loved the movie even though I was hoping for a Hallmark happy ending (and didn’t get it.) (Parental note: Rated PG-13 for language. The main characters live together but nothing is shown.)

(TV)

The usual faves including: This Is Us, Speechless, Big Bang Theory, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor and American Housewife.

Sadly, we just finished two shows. (Sad, because I didn’t want them to end!)

We finishedΒ  The Crown this week and I’m missing it. The acting, cinematography and costumes were top notch and I highly recommend it. (Parental note: Rated M for mature but I thought it rather tame for an M. The only thing I can recall is a couple bare butt shots at the beginning of the show.)

In my last Daybook, I had just started watching the show The Man in the High Castle. The premise was interesting and Brian thought some of the alternate reality scenes were weird but he both enjoyed it and I LOVED it. I thought it was well done, well acted and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for the confirmed Season 3, most likely in late 2017.Β  (Parental note: Rated M for Mature. There is some violence, language, brief nudity and a sex scene towards the end of season 2Β  that we fast forwarded through.)

Next up on the list is Victoria.

Online Daybook / 7 QT: Holiday Season 2016

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • Surviving the morning taking each of the boys Christmas shopping so they could buy presents for their siblings.
  • Weather that is cool enough to feel Christmasy but warm enough for the boys to play football in the driveway.
  • A few moments to myself to sit down and blog after a month hiatus.
  • The love of family and friends.
  • Food on the table, a roof over our head and material blessings we often take for granted.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Those who have lost loved ones recently.
  • Those who are out of work or homeless.
  • Those who find the holidays more depressing than cheerful.
  • Victims of violence, racism and abuse and for the conversion of their oppressors.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

I already shared this on IG and Facebook for anyone who does not follow me there, I am posting it here as well because it seemed to touch a nerve with many. It was written on Tuesday.

This morning as I was coming home from dropping my kids off at school, I starting thinking about a happy memory of my father-in-law and then a deep sadness filled my heart because this is our first Christmas without him. I tried to hold back the tears until I got home and could let them pour out. After a good cry I sat down to read today’s Blessed Is She devotion. I had to laugh when I saw that they were my own words (since I wrote the devotion this day) talking about feeling pain during a joyful season. Ironic. So I am taking my own advice and pouring my pain out to God and letting him embrace me in his peace. I’ll also be offering up a rosary tonight for all of you who are feeling a heaviness of heart. If you’d like me to pray for you by name, feel free to comment below.

Around the House… / Family Chit Chat…

Although there have been some moments of tears and the usual loud chaos, there have been some sweet moments this Advent/ Christmas season.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_advent

Quiet time with God. Confession – I did a lot better when Advent started. I need to get back to this with one week left of Advent!

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_a

This is hands down one of the kids’ favorite Advent activity.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_coolkies

We celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with sweet bread. πŸ™‚

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_list

Confession: I HATE when people just rip open Christmas presents and there is chaos. I like to watch as each gift is opened. My joy is seeing their face as they get something they really wanted. However, the family doesn’t want to have to watch one person at a time open gifts. As a compromise, I came up with a system of wrapping the gifts in coordinating paper so they can each open the gift with (for example) the red paper and snowmen. All those are the sport gifts – a football, a soccer ball, hockey sticks. It means I take a little longer to organize before I start wrapping gifts but the joy I get on Christmas morn is worth it. ( Yeah, I know. #nerd.)

Family Chit Chat…

We are all dong well and feeling very blessed this Christmas. The beginning half of the year was really rough for us but it is ending with a lot of joy.

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_dl_collage

Over Thanksgiving, we enjoyed a couple of days at Disneyland then we spent Thanksgiving at my parents’ house.

I’m almost finished with the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge.

This month I completed a book you should have read in school. – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

…and a book published before you were born. – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_12_19_16_book

For “A Book I Own but Never Read” I dusted off The Christmas Shoes by Donna Van Liere. Shall I admit that I sobbed at the end?

Only one category left. πŸ™‚

  • A book you can finish in one day.

Watching…

(TV)

The usual faves including: This Is Us, Speechless, Big Bang Theory, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor and American Housewife.

I watched Gilmore Girls with great expectation and came away with mixed feelings. Parts of it – I loved but the whole Rory/Logan storyline sucked. Seriously? 10 years have gone by and there is no growth in maturity. Rory was content to be the “other woman” again with a man willingΒ  to cheat on his fiance? Ugh. I hated that and not because I am #teamjess.Β  I would have been happy if she was with Logan under more committed circumstances. Well, I do hope they decided to continue the story. I think there is definitely an audience for it!

We are almost done with The Crown. And last night we re-watched The King’s Speech as a tie in.

Listening to …

Although I am a sucker for Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole, the boys love my old Relient K Christmas album. Sleigh Ride is one of my favorite non-religious Christmas songs. (Even though I have minimal experience with sleighs or snow) πŸ˜‰

Online Daybook / 7 QT (11/15/16): Saints, Voting and Fave Links

od_logo_quiet2Grateful for…

  • A quiet morning without a packed schedule where I could spend a few moments blogging.
  • The grace of Confession. ( I needed it!)
  • A productive weekend, catching up on many of my To Do’s.
  • A date with my honey.
  • This morning’s school assembly where Andrew won a “Good Citizenship” award for the First Quarter.
  • For the love of family and friends.

Praying for..

  • Many special intentions from friends.
  • Victims of violence, racism and abuse and for the conversion of their oppressors.
  • Healing of our country and for our president-elect, that he helps facilitate that healing.
  • For peace in the heart of all men/women.
  • All pregnant moms (especially family members), those trying to get pregnant, those who have lost their babies and for moms contemplating an abortion.
  • The souls in purgatory, especially family, friend and those most forgotten.

Pondering…

In November, I usually post new goals for November and December but I really want to just continue working on my Fall goals until the end of the year. I will evaluate my progress and update those goals in January.

Around the House…

RevolutionofLove.com - ond_11_14_16_b

Yesterday I was complaining to Brian about how much time I spend in the kitchen – I feel like my whole evening is consumed with making dinner, which takes longer when you try to cook with more whole foods, and then all the time to wash all the pots and pans and dishes before I turn around and immediately start making lunches for the next day. I was fed up with it but as I was grumbling and washing, God nudged me and reminded me that all these dirty dishes meant that we had plenty to eat, we had lots of people gathered to share a meal and conversation with and I had running water and my own kitchen to get everything done. Suddenly I started feeling like I had little to complain about and much more to be thankful for. I guess I need to keep working this month on an attitude of gratitude!

Family Chit Chat…

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_11_14_16_ajm

For the feast of All Soul’s Day Andrew’s class did a presentation at Mass. Here is my St. Andrew. I am so proud of him for memorizing his lines, bravely going up in front of the church and speaking clearly about his saint. For someone who has gone to speech therapy for years, this was a huge accomplishment. πŸ™‚

cwa_4_14_16__opa3

On All Souls Day we prayed for family and friends who have died, especially our beloved Dad/Opa.

I spend hours pouring over all the numerous propositions on the California ballot. (You seriously want me to vote on whether porn actors should wear condoms?!!) Sigh. Pass the chocolate.

RevolutionofLove.com - ond_11_14_16_ba

I voted. A week later I am still in shock over our president elect. I keep waiting for someone to jump out and yell, “Psych!”

There has been so much commentary about the election, I am not going to say anything different from what I have already stated. Our mission remains the same – love God and each other. We can change the world one heart at a time.

And for a bit of humor, if Leslie Knope moved to California, she wouldn’t have to worry about the marijuana issue any more.

In the Kitchen…

I haven’t made my weekly menu yet but over the holidays, I’d love to try this recipe – A healthier version of carrot cake banana bread with cream cheese frosting. Yum!

Reading…

I only have two months to finish the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge. I still have these four categories left to fill by the end of the year. I’m working on these two this month:

A book you should have read in school. – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

A book published before you were born. – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Next month I’ll have to tackle these last two categories. πŸ™‚

  • A book you can finish in one day.
  • A book you own but have never read.

Watching…

(TV)

The usual faves including: This Is Us, Speechless, Big Bang Theory, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor and American Housewife.

I finally gave up on The Walking Dead. I kept trying to hold on and hope it returns to it’s former glory days but I give up.

Next on my “that sucks” list is Poldark. I used to looooove the show and the Poldark character but after Sunday’s episode I am ready to join Demelza in giving him a few slugs. Ugh.

To make up for it, we have been enjoying the glories Netflix show The Crown. Minus the few bare butt shots they had to throw in (really?), it is an excellent show so far. (We just finished episode 4.)

(ONLINE)

ond_11_14_16_bis

And for some spiritual nourishment, last night I watch Elizabeth Foss’ Blessed Is She Workshop about Advent. So good! Oh, and if you still haven’t order the Blessed Is She Advent Journal, I share more about it here.

(YOUTUBE)

Do you want to laugh and smile like a fool? Then watch this video all the way through. Fr. Romke, Fr. Manno and Bishop Malloy from the Diocese of Rockford, IL made a parody ofΒ  the β€œCarpool Karaoke” segments made famous by James Corden’s β€œThe Late Late Show.” It is hilarious. (I especially like when they forgot to say grace before eating their ice cream and the look on Bishops’ face as they were singing at the end. LOL. πŸ™‚

Listening to …

During the holidays I don’t listen to my usual music. Instead it’s Christmas carols 24/7. This song from Sixpence None the Richer is still my favorite version of O Come O Come Emmanuel. When I am in the car and the boys are being loud with raucous yells, I press play on this song and they suddenly quiet down and sing along like an angelic boys choir. It’s a freakin Christmas miracle, people! πŸ˜‰

Around the House…

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_c_10_23_16

On Friday the boys were off school so I let them help me decorate the house with some fall decor. It looks cute but there are still the endless little piles of clutter around. I feel like I clear one spot and two more pop up to take its place. I have been bagging things to give away so I am hoping that will help. I figure, less stuff means less mess but I’ve got a long way to go. πŸ˜‰

Family Chit Chat…

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_sunflower_10_23_16

Last week Brian had his routine bloodwork to check and see if there were any signs of the cancer returning. I’m happy to say that everything looked good. His red and white blood count was steadily rising and his blood pressure was great. Every time we get a bit of good news I can breathe a sigh of relief… until the next test!

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_game_10_23_16

This weekend was Homecoming at Bella’s school. We went to the JV Football game to cheer family friends who were playing. Can you believe it was my first football game ever? I never got into it when I was younger but now that I am married to a football fan and have three little guys, our house it all about footballΒ  – from playing it in the driveway and watching it on TV to collecting football cards. Andrew and Matthew were bouncing with excitement to see there first live game. We all had a great time!

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_jp_10_23_16Well, except for John-Paul. He did have fun but he could only take so much sports until he needed some “me time” to zone out. The only way I could get him to sit through two hours of football was to let him play a couple video games between quarters. πŸ˜‰

RevolutionofLove.com - odb_brm_10_23_16

Later that evening, Bella attended her first high school dance with her friends. This photo doesn’t do her justice or the pretty dress she wore but she had a great time and I breathed a sigh of relief when she was back home and safe in her bed. (I don’t know what I’ll be like when she actually starts dating! I told her not to be surprised if she continuously finds me incognito in the background on her dates. πŸ˜‰Β  )

Reading…

I just finished…

What Alice Forgot by Lian Moriarty*

Next on the list…

The Awakening of Miss Primby Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera*

Watching…

nbc-this-is-us

I’m still loving This Is US and Speechless. We also started watching Lethal Weapon, which has become a favorite too. Poldark is a given as well.

We are watching Designated Survivor and want to start a drinking game every time Kiefer Sutherland squints and mumbles. πŸ˜‰

I gave up on The Good PlaceΒ  and have yet to watch last night’s episode of The Walking Dead. It is sitting in my DVR while I debate whether or not I will submit myself to some emotional torture. Maybe I’ll watch this weekend… or wait until I need a really good cry. (In the meantime, no spoilers, please!)

Listening to …

(MUSIC)

Love this one by Coin and not just because Brian knows the best way to shut me up. πŸ˜‰
